Announcing The New Zealand Screen Awards: A Celebration Of The Best TV & Film In Aotearoa

The New Zealand Television Awards are undergoing a major evolution this year, expanding to become the New Zealand Screen Awards (NZSA), now celebrating excellence across all screen content, including both television and film.
The exciting transformation will acknowledge content exhibited theatrically, in addition to programmes made for broadcast, streaming and digital platforms, creating a more comprehensive celebration of New Zealand's vibrant screen industry.
This significant expansion reflects the ever-changing nature of the entertainment landscape and the growing crossover between television, film, and digital platforms. The New Zealand Screen Awards will continue to honour outstanding achievements across scripted, factual, documentary, news & current affairs content in production, direction, acting, writing, and technical fields, but now with a clear emphasis on both small and big-screen content.
'We've seen an incredible growth in the diversity of content being created in New Zealand, with many exceptional productions blurring the lines between television, digital and feature,' said New Zealand Screen Awards Committee Member Kelly Martin. 'Rebranding to the New Zealand Screen Awards is a natural progression as we aim to celebrate the full scope of our local screen industry.'
NZ On Air, NZ Film Commission and Te Māngai Pāho are excited by the expansion of the awards to include film. The agencies' CE's – Annie Murray, Cameron Harland and Larry Parr – jointly said: 'This is absolutely the right thing to do, acknowledging that those who work on the excellent films created in Aotearoa deserve recognition and that many people involved in creating screen content work across film and television. We look forward to celebrating the best in Aotearoa screen content and supporting what will be an uplifting event for our sector.'
The New Zealand Screen Awards this year also welcomes a new Committee member as long-serving member Producer Bailey Mackey steps down, along with filmmaker Roseanne Liang. Joining the NZSA Committee is actor, writer, director and 2024 Arts Laureate Miriama McDowell. Continuing committee members include South Pacific Pictures Chief Executive Kelly Martin, veteran film and television publicist Tamar Münch and news, current affairs and documentary Producer Adrian Stevanon, with further committee members to be announced.
Justine McKay and Andy Dowding from janda Productions add: 'We're delighted to have found a way to include all screen content into these Awards. As consumers become increasingly platform agnostic it's the perfect time to create space for the film industry to be a part of these awards. And after such a long hiatus the film sector can finally have their skills and achievements recognised again. We look forward to seeing all the entries!'
The New Zealand Screen Awards would not be possible without the generous support of its event partners: NZ On Air, Images and Sound, the New Zealand Film Commission (NZFC), and Te Māngai Pāho. Their commitment plays a vital role in recognising excellence across the screen industry of Aotearoa.

The inaugural New Zealand Screen Awards will take place in Auckland, New Zealand later this year, with the expanded categories set to reflect the very best in New Zealand's screen talent and creativity.
Entries for the 2025 New Zealand Screen Awards will open on Monday 30 June.
The New Zealand Screen Awards recognise excellence in film and television and honour the special skills and unique talents of the companies and individuals who create, produce, and perform in films and television programmes in New Zealand. Waitaki writer's collection wins NZSA prize

PHOTO: JULES CHIN Oamaru writer Susanna Elliffe has received an "outpouring of love" after winning the New Zealand Society of Authors (NZSA) Laura Solomon Cuba Press Prize, awarded for new writing with a "unique and original vision". The prize was established by the NZSA and the Solomon family to honour novelist, poet, and playwright Laura Solomon, who died in 2019 at the age of 48. Ms Elliffe's winning manuscript, Relic Party, is a short-story collection exploring themes of loss — intimate and global, human and non-human. The stories journey through eerie ghosts, false relics, dysfunctional family homes, and speculative futures affected by climate change. The award includes a $2000 cash prize and a publishing contract with The Cuba Press, with the book set for release in 2026. Elliffe, 29, said she was "so excited" to finally share the news after keeping it secret for two weeks. "It was very difficult but very rewarding when I could tell everyone. I had such an outpouring of love. It's very exciting," she said. She described the win as "deeply honouring" and "surreal". The prize judges — Mary McCallum of The Cuba Press, Nicky Solomon from the Solomon family, and award-winning writer Cassie Hart — praised Relic Party for its originality and unique voice. Hart said the quality of entries was exceptional, but Elliffe's work stood out. "I know readers will fall in love with Susanna Elliffe's prose and storytelling just like we did," she said. The runner-up was Christchurch writer Belinda O'Keefe, who won $1000 for her manuscript Trespassers Will Be Baked, Scrambled, Fried and Eaten. Elliffe's writing has previously been shortlisted for competitions including the Sargeson Prize and the International Bridport Prize. She describes her style as experimental, "throwing away the rules" to create stories that are strange, surreal, but deeply human. Now in the final year of her master's degree in creative writing at Massey University, she said Relic Party was written over five years. The collection includes tales of generational worship of possibly false relics, a future where only one shark remains alive in New Zealand, and a story about inheritance that blends body image struggles with ghostly presence. Her studies in eco-fiction have inspired her to write about the natural world, often with nautical or ocean themes, blending speculative fiction about the future with both fear and hope. Born and raised in Oamaru, Elliffe attended Waitaki Girls' High School before earning a Bachelor of Arts in English literature from Victoria University of Wellington. She has worked as a librarian and teacher's aide in Oamaru and remains involved in local musical theatre, though writing is her "main love". Elliffe credits Massey University's supportive faculty and her family — including her mother and sister who helped edit her work — for their encouragement. Influential authors for her included Max Porter, K-Ming Chang, and New Zealand writer Louise Wallace. With a new novel in mind, Ms Elliffe dreams of one day opening her own bookstore, but is focused now on building her writing career.

Shortland Street Returns For 2026 - Thanks To NZ On Air
TVNZ and South Pacific Pictures are pleased to announce Shortland Street will return for its 2026 season, thanks to ongoing funding support from NZ On Air. NZ On Air funding, which was confirmed this morning, combined with eligibility for the Screen Production Rebate, will enable the continuation of New Zealand's longest-running drama in the new year. Shortland Street is one of the most recognisable and loved television programmes in Aotearoa. It provides immense cultural value on screen, while also offering a rich training ground for actors and crew behind the scenes. Shortland Street is a key pillar of the TVNZ 2 slate, but its dedicated rangatahi audience has placed it at the forefront of audience fragmentation. As one of TVNZ+'s most streamed programmes, Shorty fans are split across broadcast and digital platforms. With audiences migrating online, effort is underway to increase the digital revenue needed to support Shortland Street as a digital first content proposition. Prior to 2023, Shortland Street operated without funding support for 28 years. TVNZ and South Pacific Pictures are focusing on transitioning Shortland Street to a commercially funded, digitally delivered show and NZ On Air's funding provides a crucial pathway towards making that ambition a reality. TVNZ's Chief Executive, Jodi O'Donnell says, 'We're extremely grateful for NZ On Air's support in helping us keep this taonga on screen. Our audiences love Shorty and NZ On Air's funding ensures we can continue to bring this iconic drama to viewers in 2026 while we work through its digital transition.' South Pacific Pictures Chief Executive, Kelly Martin says ' Shortland Street continues to entertain NZ audiences with its diverse and relatable stories, and it continues to play a crucial role in the NZ production sector, providing consistent employment and fostering local talent.
