
Unmanned ocean craft has been spotted off the coast of Queensland
Powered by wave motion and solar energy, the Wave Glider is an autonomous vessel designed to collect real-time intelligence for both defence and environmental applications.
It was recently seen off the coast of Mackay, on the Coral Sea in north Queensland, during a week-long deployment that ends on Thursday, July 24.
Developed by US marine robotics firm Liquid Robotics, the mission was arranged on behalf of the US Special Operations Command.
The exact purpose of the deployment remains unclear. The craft can be configured for a wide range of defence and civilian uses, depending on its customised payload.
Its capabilities include tracking and communicating with submarines, gathering acoustic, signal, and image intelligence, and conducting surface and sub-surface surveillance and communications.
On the surface, the Wave Glider is not much larger than a surfboard, with a mast extending about a metre above the water. This is connected via an 'umbilical' tether to a submerged unit located roughly eight metres below.
Originally designed to record the sounds of humpback whales, the Wave Glider has since evolved into a versatile defence tool through a partnership with Boeing.
In 2016, a network of Wave Gliders was used to detect, report, and track a live submarine during the UK Navy's Unmanned Warrior demonstration.
The crafts were fitted with acoustic sensors made by Boeing to locate an underwater vehicle and a diesel submarine off the coast of Northern Scotland.
Later that year, Boeing acquired Liquid Robotics, which now operates as a wholly owned subsidiary under Boeing's Defence, Space and Security division.
First developed in 2007, the technology can collect data on wind, weather, and waves, and can reportedly operate unmanned for up to a year.
It is also used for environmental assessment and offshore energy applications.
In 2017, the Wave Glider was deployed by the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) to monitor conditions in the Great Barrier Reef.
The 200-nautical-mile trial mission provided continuous, real-time environmental ocean data, including temperature, turbidity, currents, wave height, and salinity.
Dr Lyndon Llewellyn, Head of Data and Technology Innovation at AIMS, said the craft's ability to remain true to its charted course was 'extraordinary'.
'It went where it was told to and it stayed the course like an orienteering champion,' he said in a statement at the time.
'We are impressed with the number of different measurements it could conduct at the same time and its ability to transmit the data back to our base immediately and reliably while navigating and performing its mission.'
A spokesperson confirmed AIMS had not used the Wave Glider since the 2017 trial.

The president spoke after the White House released its AI Action Plan on Wednesday, which detailed the administration's efforts to boost the development and innovation of the technology. The document recommends that Trump streamline regulations and permitting to allow companies to build massive data centers and energy sources quickly to help accelerate the AI or 'genius' industry. During his speech, Trump announced he was getting rid of President Biden's executive order which outlined a preference preference for companies who prioritized DEI programs and climate goals. 'We're getting rid of woke,' Trump said triumphantly, adding that, 'It's so uncool to be woke.' He said his goal was to root out 'partisan bias' or ideological agendas from tech companies and artificial intelligence models such as 'critical race theory' which he described as 'ridiculous.' 'The American people do not want woke Marxist lunacy in the AI models and neither do other countries,' Trump said. 'From now on the US government will only work with AI that works with truth.' Trump acknowledged the dangers of artificial intelligence, but described the race with China and other countries on the technology as one the United States had to win. 'This technology brings the potential for bad as well as for good, for peril as well as for progress but the daunting power of AI is not going to be a reason for retreat from this new frontier,' he said.

Lightyear app launches AI features to make investing less 'expensive, clunky and exclusive'
Investment platform Lightyear has unveiled new artificial intelligence features which it says will help to drive retail investment in the UK. Lightyear, which recently passed $1billion in assets under management, said its new AI tools will help to make UK retail investing 'affordable, simple, and accessible as opposed to expensive, clunky, and exclusive'. It comes as the Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, has launched a campaign to promote retail investing, while 'targeted support' reforms will come into play next year. Martin Sokk, co-founder and chief executive of Lightyear, told This is Money: 'Retail investing in the UK is still full of friction, and Britain is still a nation of cautious investors, so there's much more to do here. 'We're using AI to bridge the gap, to help people make better-informed investing decisions in real time.' Lightyear on Thursday launched three AI market intelligence tools on its platform, which it says will 'level the playing field' by giving users access to market insights that were previously only accessible to institutional investors. These tools include 'lightning updates', which will send summarised news to a user's portfolio screen when a stock they own or are tracking makes a significant move. The platform has also launched a 'why did it move' feature, which allows users to select any period on a stock's price chart to find out why the price changed at that time, such as due to earnings, sector swings or global events. Investors can also access bull and bear cases for a stock, with both angles drawn from analyst sentiment and certain trusted sources of financial information. Lightyear says it will continue developing its AI capabilities over the next few years, including by adding wealth management options for investors, and that AI was 'integral' to its long-term strategy. Future AI developments could offer portfolio breakdowns and analysis, contextual tax help and what it calls 'self-driving money' - automated money management based on the investor's personal goals. Sokk said: 'AI in the financial sector is not just a phase. Companies that are building with this in mind will be the ones that succeed in the long run.' 'We believe AI will drive a lot of technological progress in the next five to ten years, so it's an integral part of our long-term strategy. 'Our new AI-powered market intelligence tools are just the beginning.' The platform said it has raised $23million in a series B funding round, with the new funds committed to launching its AI suite and further developing its AI offering. The funding was led by European-Japanese VC firm NordicNinja, as well as Superangel and SpecialistVC, as well as Bolt founder and chief executive Markus Villig. Rainer Sternfeld, partner at NordicNinja, said: 'We believe that AI will play a powerful role in every aspect of our future, and the investing sector is not immune to that.' On Thursday Lightyear also launched its platform in Sweden, Denmark and Bulgaria.

China plans network to sell surplus computing power in crackdown on data centre glut
July 24 (Reuters) - China is taking steps to build a network to sell computing power and curb the unwieldy growth of data centres after thousands of local government-backed centres that sprouted in the country caused a capacity glut and threatened their viability. The state planner is conducting a nationwide assessment of the sector after a three-year data centre building boom, according to two sources familiar with the matter and a document seen by Reuters. Beijing is also seeking to set up a national, state-run cloud service for harnessing surplus computing power, according to Chinese government policy advisers. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) is collaborating with China's three state telecoms companies on ways to connect the data centres in a network to create a platform that can sell the computing power, they said. Computing power is a crucial element in the race for technological supremacy between China and the U.S. Besides being an embarrassment for Beijing, unused computing power and financially shaky data centres could hinder China's ambitions in the development of artificial intelligence capabilities. "Everything will be handed over to our cloud to perform unified organisation, orchestration, and scheduling capabilities," Chen Yili, deputy chief engineer at the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, a think tank affiliated to the industry ministry, told an industry conference in Beijing last month. Chen did not specify details of the cloud service proposal, but his presentation materials showed China was targeting standardised interconnection of public computing power nationwide by 2028, even as some analysts were skeptical about the plan given the technological challenges it posed. The sources did not want to be identified because of the sensitivities of the issue. China's data centre building boom kickstarted in 2022 after Beijing launched an ambitious infrastructure project called "Eastern Data, Western Computing", aimed at coordinating data centre construction by concentrating facilities in western regions - where energy costs are cheaper - to meet demand from the eastern economic hubs. Chen said at the June event that the industry ministry has so far licensed at least 7,000 computing centres. A Reuters review of government procurement documents for data centres used in computing shows a surge last year in state investment, totalling 24.7 billion yuan ($3.4 billion), compared to over 2.4 billion yuan in 2023. This year, already 12.4 billion yuan has been invested in these centres, most of it in the far-west region of Xinjiang. But while only 11 such data centre-related projects were cancelled in 2023, over 100 cancellations occurred over the past 18 months, pointing to growing concerns among local governments about returns on their investments. And utilisation rates are estimated to be low, with four sources putting them at around 20%-30%. Driven by expectations that government and state-owned firms will act as buyers, investors and local governments tend to build without considering real market needs, said a project manager who works for a server company that provides products for such data centers. "The idea of building data centers in remote western provinces lacks economic justification in the first place," said Charlie Chai, an analyst with 86Research, adding lower operating costs had to be viewed against degradation in performance and accessibility. To regulate the sector's growth, China's state planner National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) initiated a nationwide assessment earlier this year that has already tightened scrutiny of new data center projects planned after March 20, and banned local governments from participating in small-sized computing infrastructure projects. The NDRC aims to prevent resource wastage by setting specific thresholds - such as requiring a computing power purchase agreement and a minimum utilisation ratio - to filter out unqualified projects, according to a person familiar with the matter, who did not provide details on the thresholds. NDRC did not respond to a request for comment. Industry sources and Chinese policy advisers said the formation of a computing power network will not be easy, given that the technology for data centers to efficiently transfer the power to users in real-time remains underdeveloped. When the Chinese government rolled out the Eastern Data, Western Computing project, it targeted a maximum latency of 20 milliseconds by 2025, a threshold necessary for real-time applications such as high-frequency trading and financial services. However, many facilities, especially those built in the remote western regions, still have not achieved this standard, the project manager said. Many of the centres also use different chips from Nvidia (NVDA.O), opens new tab and local alternatives such as Huawei's ( Ascend chips, making it difficult to integrate various AI chips with different hardware and software architectures to create a unified cloud service. Chen, however, was optimistic, describing a vision of the cloud bridging the differences in underlying computing power and the physical infrastructure. "Users do not need to worry about what chips are at the bottom layer; they just need to specify their requirements, such as the amount of computing power and network capacity needed," he said.
