Lightyear app launches AI features to make investing less 'expensive, clunky and exclusive'

Daily Mail24-07-2025
Investment platform Lightyear has unveiled new artificial intelligence features which it says will help to drive retail investment in the UK.
Lightyear, which recently passed $1billion in assets under management, said its new AI tools will help to make UK retail investing 'affordable, simple, and accessible as opposed to expensive, clunky, and exclusive'.
It comes as the Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, has launched a campaign to promote retail investing, while 'targeted support' reforms will come into play next year.
Martin Sokk, co-founder and chief executive of Lightyear, told This is Money: 'Retail investing in the UK is still full of friction, and Britain is still a nation of cautious investors, so there's much more to do here.
'We're using AI to bridge the gap, to help people make better-informed investing decisions in real time.'
Lightyear on Thursday launched three AI market intelligence tools on its platform, which it says will 'level the playing field' by giving users access to market insights that were previously only accessible to institutional investors.
These tools include 'lightning updates', which will send summarised news to a user's portfolio screen when a stock they own or are tracking makes a significant move.
The platform has also launched a 'why did it move' feature, which allows users to select any period on a stock's price chart to find out why the price changed at that time, such as due to earnings, sector swings or global events.
Investors can also access bull and bear cases for a stock, with both angles drawn from analyst sentiment and certain trusted sources of financial information.
Lightyear says it will continue developing its AI capabilities over the next few years, including by adding wealth management options for investors, and that AI was 'integral' to its long-term strategy.
Future AI developments could offer portfolio breakdowns and analysis, contextual tax help and what it calls 'self-driving money' - automated money management based on the investor's personal goals.
Sokk said: 'AI in the financial sector is not just a phase. Companies that are building with this in mind will be the ones that succeed in the long run.'
'We believe AI will drive a lot of technological progress in the next five to ten years, so it's an integral part of our long-term strategy.
'Our new AI-powered market intelligence tools are just the beginning.'
The platform said it has raised $23million in a series B funding round, with the new funds committed to launching its AI suite and further developing its AI offering.
The funding was led by European-Japanese VC firm NordicNinja, as well as Superangel and SpecialistVC, as well as Bolt founder and chief executive Markus Villig.
Rainer Sternfeld, partner at NordicNinja, said: 'We believe that AI will play a powerful role in every aspect of our future, and the investing sector is not immune to that.'
On Thursday Lightyear also launched its platform in Sweden, Denmark and Bulgaria.

Beyond the F40 and 250 GTO, there's a world of Ferrari to discover. We highlight 5 forgotten Ferrari models that are now surprisingly undervalued and deserve more love. Like every other automaker, Hyundai recognizes that China is an important market. Claiming the vehicle as 'a new starting point,' the company recently revealed the electric Elexio SUV, which has shown impressive capabilities in early safety testing. Hyundai acknowledged that China is a 'must-fight place' for global companies, and the Elexio may help it compete with more established homegrown brands in the country. The automaker is targeting a CLTC driving range of 435 miles (roughly 320 miles using EPA testing) and says the SUV offers fast-charging, advanced technologies, and more. Early crash tests show the new SUV to offer above-average safety, with Hyundai citing its 'God's Hand' high-strength steel plating as a major factor in the tests. It features 360-degree body reinforcements and floor beams for better structural rigidity. Low-temperature battery evaluations found that the Elexio lost less driving range in low-temperature conditions, and it had no trouble operating in ultra-cold conditions. The Elexio is a bit smaller than the Tesla Model Y and will be offered in two configurations, including single- and dual-motor options. The single-motor powertrain offers 214 horsepower, and the dual setup has 312 hp. Both configurations will use LFP batteries from BYD's battery subsidiary, FinDream. Source: Image: Hyundai Hyundai also touted the crossover's ride quality, saying it has 'the highest suspension configuration in its class.' It features advanced dampers and hydraulic bushings, and the automaker said it reworked the suspension system more than 300 times before settling on the configuration. The Elexio is known as the Ioniq 5 of China, so it's unlikely that we'll see it on American streets anytime soon. It's built in China through Hyundai's partnership with BAIC and is expected to have a reasonable starting price of under $20,000. Hyundai plans to launch the vehicle in the third quarter of this year. About the Author Chris Teague View Profile

AI scams awareness campaign launched in North Wales

The campaign, led by the charity Get Safe Online in collaboration with North Wales Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Andy Dunbobbin, aims to help residents use AI safely and confidently this summer. Get Safe Online is a service commissioned by the PCC's office and the police force to provide digital safety information to the public. Mr Dunbobbin, PCC for North Wales, said: "As Police and Crime Commissioner, fighting cybercrime is one of my key priorities and AI is one of the biggest digital and technological innovations of recent years. "It has the power to transform our lives, often for the better. "But with every innovation, there is always a criminal who will try and use it for their own ends, whether that be through fraud, theft, or deception. "As well as using these new technologies, the important thing is for people to educate themselves about the dangers that might be lurking in the shadows. "As the old saying goes, forewarned is forearmed. "That's why I encourage people to follow this new advice from Get Safe Online and stay safe while using the internet and information technology." AI technology now underpins many everyday tools, from virtual assistants to online shopping and entertainment recommendations. While these systems offer convenience, they also present fresh opportunities for cybercriminals. The campaign warns that AI can be used to create convincing scams and other forms of digital deception. To help the public stay safe online, Get Safe Online is sharing practical advice for identifying and avoiding AI-enabled scams. The organisation recommends: Checking the context: Be wary of unsolicited emails, messages, or phone calls, even if they appear professional. If the message seems urgent or too good to be true, it could be a scam. Inspecting the details: AI-generated content may be grammatically correct but could include subtle errors, such as odd email addresses, incorrect logos, or unusual phrasing. In images and videos, look for signs that something is not quite right. Verifying identity independently: Do not trust a message alone. Use a known, trusted method to contact the person or organisation and confirm their identity. Get Safe Online also offers more general guidance for using AI tools responsibly. The charity recommends using AI as an aid rather than a replacement for critical thinking. Users should review and refine content generated by AI, and confirm information using reliable sources. Personal and financial information should not be entered into AI tools, as there is a risk that it could be exposed to others through generative AI or search platforms. Staying informed about AI developments and new scam techniques is also encouraged. Special Constable Dwain Barnes from North Wales Police's Cybercrime Team said: "Although Generative AI has the potential to improve many aspects of society, it can also be used by criminals to author convincing phishing emails, create disinformation for social media posts or generate deepfake images and videos that look realistic, making them very difficult to spot. "AI can also clone a person's voice from a few seconds of audio. "Scammers can therefore use AI to impersonate trusted individuals and trick people into transferring money or revealing sensitive information, for example. "It is therefore more important than ever to double check information to ensure that it is from a trusted source and if you receive unexpected requests or messages which might seem urgent or emotional, take your time and verify that they are genuine by contacting the sender directly using a verified means of contact, not by replying to the message or calling the number back." Mr Barnes also offered additional security tips for the public. READ MORE: Plans submitted to build new Home Bargains store in Flintshire He said: "To help you stay safe, use strong long passwords using three random words, turn on two-step verification for all your accounts and don't share those codes with anyone else. "Be mindful about what you are posting online, scammers can download your content and use it to create deepfakes, so it's advisable to have strong privacy settings on your social media accounts. "Also consider agreeing on a secret word or phrase with your family or team members, you can then use this to confirm that it really is them if something doesn't feel right. "Let's keep spreading the word on how scammers are using AI, it's important for more people to understand how AI deepfakes work, which will make it harder for scammers to succeed." Anthony Joshua teases surprise move into another sport amid Jake Paul showdown talks

Anthony Joshua has taken to social media to make a plea to Matchroom boss Eddie Hearn over a business venture in a different sport. Since turning professional in 2013 Joshua has been attached to the Matchroom banner, a partnership that led to two-time world champion status for the 2012 Olympic gold medallist. Currently sidelined as he recovers from elbow surgery he underwent earlier this year, Joshua appears to be brainstorming ideas for life after boxing, suggesting to Hearn that they tackle football agency together. He posted on his Instagram story: 'Eddie Hearn, the family has conquered darts, snooker, pool, boxing, fishing, golf, owning a football club & you've had a presence in basketball, netball & gymnastics. 'I believe 'we' could look at the football agency industry and have a strong presence. 'Imagine we help manager the player who helped England win the World Cup. 'Call me tomorrow mate.' Eddie Hearn's father, founder of Matchroom Barry Hearn, owned English Football League club Leyton Orient for the best part of two decades, but that is the limit of the family's direct involvement in the sport. However, Matchroom's success across a variety of sports would give them instant authority in the world of football. There has been some overlap with football agencies and promotions in the past, with one of the biggest companies in soccer, Wasserman, buying Team Sauerland and creating Wasserman Boxing in 2021. In May, Joshua confirmed that he was exploring the possibility of buying shares in hometown football club Watford. The Hornets have bounced between the Premier League and Championship over the past 20 years, but whilst Joshua is fond of the club, it appeared to be more of a financial decision. He told Seconds Out: "We wanted to move into private equity, venture capital funds. As you earn, naturally, you want to save. "So rather than me spending recklessly I'm trying to invest money into certain asset classes and that was an opportunity that presented itself. 'Nothing's come of it yet. It's a serious investment. If it comes off it's one that should do well. 'If they went back to the Premier League, then I'd need to get a shop on Market Street because the traffic that would be coming through Watford would be phenomenal. 'If we don't do it then good luck to them anyway because they're a great team." Speculation has surrounded Joshua in recent days, with rumours about his next opponent. Latest Queensberry recruit Tony Yoka is one mooted option, but Jake Paul's camp have claimed that talks with Matchroom have started regarding a potential bout between their fighter and Joshua. DAZN Matchroom, Queensberry, Golden Boy, Misfits, PFL, BKFC, GLORY and more.
