Tom Haines had led England Lions to a spirited reply with a composed century after Karun Nair's masterful double hundred propelled India A to a massive 557 on day 2. Haines, known for his consistency and technical prowess in English domestic cricket, took charge after the early loss of Ben McKinney (16) to Anshul Kamboj's impressive swing and control.
Haines was joined by Emilio Gay, and together they steadied the innings with a solid 109-run partnership. Gay, who looked fluent, narrowly missed a half-century, falling for 46 after facing 90 balls and striking eight fours. He was dismissed by Harsh Dubey, breaking the stand just as India A felt the pressure.
Max Holden then joined Haines and played positively, scoring a brisk 64 off 61 deliveries, peppered with eight fours and a six. The duo stitched together a 106-run partnership, ensuring the Lions finished strongly.
India A skipper Abhimanyu Easwaran used multiple bowlers to disrupt the Lions' momentum, but Haines and Holden remained composed and attacking.
Earlier, Karun Nair, returning to the Indian Test setup after eight years, showcased his class with a sublime 204 off 281 balls, including 26 boundaries and a six, after India A resumed at the overnight score of 409/3. Karun, who resumed from an overnight 186, reached his 200 off 272 balls with a four over covers off pacer Eddie Jack.
However, India A lost two quick wickets of overnight batters Dhruv Jurel (94) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (7). Karun and Jurel had added 195 runs for the fourth wicket before Jurel's dismissal. Karun was eventually dismissed after edging an incoming delivery from pacer Zaman Akhter to wicketkeeper James Rew. The Lions' pacers then went through the rest of the India A line-up with regular blows.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) reacted on Monday to the recent social media furore over Mukesh Kumar donning Virat Kohli's iconic No. 18 jersey during the India A match against the England Lions at the St Lawrence Ground, Canterbury. The Indian board also opened up on whether they would retire Kohli's jersey, just like it was done for Sachin Tendulkar and MS Dhoni. During India A's first four-day unofficial Test match against the England Lions, Mukesh was spotted wearing the No. 18 jersey, pictures of which went instantly viral on the internet. Fans were left enraged, with the India fast bowler being bombarded with hate messages. They also lashed out at the BCCI for allowing it, saying it was an act of "disrespect" towards the former India captain, who retired from the traditional format earlier last month. Speaking to the PTI, a senior BCCI official in the know of things explained that while a player can opt for any jersey number during an India A match, his/her kit number during an international game will remain the same as it was before. This implied that Mukesh, who has not been picked for the Test series against England, if selected for the contest, his jersey number would be 49, the one he wore during his senior team debut in the West Indies. However, the report said that the jersey numbers allotted to them are different. In India, there are no formal ways to retire a jersey, but there are instances where famous numbers aren't worn by players who come later into the team. India-A batters shine as first unofficial Test against England Lions ended in a draw
Canterbury [UK], June 2 (ANI): Nitish Reddy and Dhruv Jurel kept India A going in their second innings against England Lions in the first unofficial test match at Canterbury on Monday. The match ended in a draw. Nitish Reddy 52 (47)and Dhruv Jurel 53 (53) remained not out on the crease as India-A finished Day four on 241/2. Indian openers Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed for 64 while Abhimanyu Easwaran scored 68. The duo stitched 123 runs for the opening wicket. India-A started off their second innings after lunch as they bowled out Lions for 585-9. Jaiswal and Easwaran opened the innings for India-A. Jaiswal started India's second innings with a six on the very first ball off Josh Hull. India hurried to 50 in the 6th as both batters counter-attacked English bowlers: Abhimanyu Easwaran (17 (12) and Yashasvi Jaiswal 35 (24). Easwaran completed his fifty in the 15th over after pushing the ball towards deep backwards point for a single off Ajeet Dale. Jaiswal also completed his fifty in the following over, after hitting a four, towards third man off Eddie Jack. The duo brought up a 100-run partnership for the opening wicket in the same over. Rehan Ahmed removed Jaiswal in the 20th over, and Dhruv Jurel joined Easwaran in the middle. Ahmed cleaned up Easwaran in the 28th over, Nitish Reddy got a promotion in the batting order as he joined Jurel after the fall of the second wicket. Yashasvi Jaiswal (64 off 60 balls), Abhimanyu Easwaran (68 off 87 balls), Dhruv Jurel (53 not out), and Nitish Kumar Reddy (52 not out off 47 balls) got some runs and confidence before the second game in Northampton, starting June 6. The match was called off after India A raced to 241 for 2 in 41 overs with 25 overs remaining on the final day. England Lions ended their first innings before lunch on day 4 on a healthy 587/10, taking a 30-run lead over India A's first innings score of 557.
