ICC rankings: Abhishek Sharma becomes No.1 T20I batter for the first time

India batter Abhishek Sharma has climbed to the top of the ICC T20 International batting rankings, ending Travis Head's year-long reign. Head missed Australia's recent five-match series in the West Indies, which the visitors won 5-0.
Josh Inglis scored 172 runs in the series, including two half-centuries, and rose six places to ninth. Tim David (up 12 places to 18th) and Cameron Green (up 64 places to 24th) have reached career-best positions. Among West Indies players, Brandon King has moved up nine spots to joint-21st.
The top seven T20I bowlers remain unchanged, with New Zealand's Jacob Duffy retaining the top position after taking six wickets in the Zimbabwe International Tri-Series. Australia fast bowler Nathan Ellis has climbed seven places to eighth.
Stokes, Jadeja rise in ICC Test rankings after Manchester draw
All-rounders Ben Stokes and Ravindra Jadeja have made significant gains in the ICC Men's Test Player Rankings following their standout performances in the drawn fourth Test of the World Test Championship series between England and India.
England captain Stokes has moved up three places to third among all-rounders—his highest position since December 2022. His innings of 141 and a six-wicket match haul, which included a five-for in the first innings, also helped him rise eight places to 34th among batters and from 45th to 42nd among bowlers.
Jadeja has further strengthened his position as the top-ranked all-rounder after scoring an unbeaten 107 and claiming four wickets. He added 13 rating points to reach a total of 422—117 points ahead of second-placed Mehidy Hasan of Bangladesh. Jadeja also gained five spots to reach 29th among batters and moved up one place to 14th among bowlers.
Joe Root's 150 at Old Trafford extended his lead at the top of the batting rankings to 37 rating points over second-placed Kane Williamson. Openers Ben Duckett (up five places to 10th) and Zak Crawley (up two places to 43rd) also made notable progress, while Ollie Pope has moved up to 24th.
India all-rounder Washington Sundar's unbeaten 101 in the second innings—during which he shared a 203-run stand with Jadeja for an unbroken fifth wicket—helped him climb eight places to 65th among batters. Sundar also moved up eight spots to joint-13th in the all-rounders' list, having taken two wickets in the match.
In the bowling rankings, Jofra Archer continued his impressive return after nearly four years. His 3 for 73 helped him jump 38 places to 63rd. Chris Woakes also made gains, rising one place to 23rd after taking three wickets in the match, including a double strike early in India's second innings.

'England Would Have Been A Good Learning Curve': Gill Praised By Former NZ Star

Last Updated: Ex-New Zealand all-rounder Jesse Ryder praised India's Test skipper Shubman Gill for his 754 runs in England, earning Player of the Series. Former New Zealand all-rounder Jesse Ryder believes India's newly-appointed Test skipper Shubman Gill has gained significant experience from the tour of England. Gill had an exceptional July, scoring 754 runs in the five-match series against England. His impressive performance included a double century and two centuries across 10 innings, averaging a remarkable 75.40. This earned him the Player of the Series award. His run tally was the second-highest ever in a World Test Championship tournament. Under his leadership, India overcame deficits twice to draw the series 2-2. In an exclusive interview with IANS, Ryder praised India's vast pool of talent and shared his thoughts on Gill's first series as captain. 'There's a lot of talent coming through, especially over here in India. There are so many people here. Shubman Gill is a young fellow. England would have been a good learning curve for him," Ryder was quoted as saying to IANS. After being down 1-2 post the Lord's Test, India showcased remarkable resilience, levelling the Anderson-Tendulkar series 2-2. Mohammed Siraj played a crucial role with his exceptional bowling, finishing as the highest wicket-taker with 23 wickets in five Tests. His figures of 4-86 and 5-125 in the fifth and final Test at The Oval were crucial, especially in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, who missed the final game due to workload management. When asked about India's next rising star, Ryder identified Yashasvi Jaiswal. Jaiswal started the series with a dominating century at Headingley and concluded with a gritty 118 in the second innings of the deciding match at The Oval, totaling 411 runs across five games. 'India has got a lot of talent coming through, they've got great players like Jaiswal coming through," he added. Gill also won the ICC Men's Player of the Month for July 2025 following his heroics against England in the thrilling Test series for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Former New Zealand batter to play for Scotland in Cricket World Cup League 2

Tom Bruce, the former New Zealand international, has committed his future to Scotland and will feature in their squad for the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup League 2 series in Canada later this month. The 34-year-old right-hander, who represented the Black Caps in 17 T20Is between 2017 and 2020, became eligible for Scotland through his Edinburgh-born connection to Scottish cricket stretches back almost a decade. In 2016, he turned out for Scotland's Development XI, scoring an unbeaten 132 against Durham Academy, but ICC regulations at the time prevented him from making a full international appearance. With eligibility now secured, he is set to add both quality and experience to the Scottish prolific performer for Central Districts in New Zealand's domestic circuit, Bruce has compiled over 6,200 first-class runs at an average of 47.12. In the T20 arena, he has surpassed 2,500 runs for the Stags at a strike rate above 140, notching 18 fifties along the way. Speaking on Bruce being named in the squad, Steve Snell, Cricket Scotland Head of Performance, said, 'We're excited to welcome Tom Bruce into the squad for the first time. He has had a very successful career in New Zealand cricket, but he is proud of his Scottish heritage, and we've been in conversations with him for some time about committing to playing for Scotland. He's excited to get involved and sees a huge level of opportunity for both him and the team moving forward.'Currently sitting third in the League 2 standings, Scotland are in a tight race with Canada and Namibia. ‘Will cherish double ton in Birmingham forever': Shubman Gill after winning ICC's player of the month award

Shubman Gill broke a plethora of records by scoring 269 in India's first innings of the second Test against England at Edgbaston. It was the highest score by an Indian captain in the format, surpassing Virat Kohli's unbeaten 254 against South Africa in Pune in 2019. It was part of an exceptional series for Gill overall, which also happened to be his first as India's Test captain. He has won the ICC's player of the month award for his efforts and he has now said that the innings in Birmingham is something he would cherish forever. 'It feels great to be named the ICC Player of the Month for July,' Gill said. 'This time it holds a lot more significance since it has come for my performances during my first Test series as captain. The double ton in Birmingham is obviously something I will cherish forever and will be one of the highlights of my tour to England,' he said. Gill said that the series was a learning experience for him. With every match going into the fifth day, and some into the dying minutes of the final sessions as well, the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy is being called one of the greatest series of this century. It ended tied 2-2, just the third time that India have managed to draw a series in England. 'The Test series against England was a learning experience for me as captain and we had some outstanding performances from both sides, which I am sure players from both sides will remember for a long time. I would like to thank the jury for selecting me for this award and my teammates who have been with me during the course of this exciting series. I look forward to continuing my form in the season ahead and bring more laurels for the country,' said Gill. Gill went on to score 161 in the second innings of the same Test. He finished with a whopping 754 runs in the series, breaking Sunil Gavaskar's record for most runs by an Indian captain in a Test series. He also narrowly missed out on Gavaskar's record for most runs by an Indian in a Test series. In July alone Gill scored 567 runs at an outstanding average of 94.50 across three Tests. His 754-run tally stands as the second-highest by any Test captain in history, surpassed only by Don Bradman's 810 runs as Australian captain during the 1936-1937 Ashes. Notably, Gill entered the England series without a single Test century in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia), having yet to play a Test match in New Zealand.
