Ex-New Zealand all-rounder Jesse Ryder praised India's Test skipper Shubman Gill for his 754 runs in England, earning Player of the Series.
Former New Zealand all-rounder Jesse Ryder believes India's newly-appointed Test skipper Shubman Gill has gained significant experience from the tour of England.
Gill had an exceptional July, scoring 754 runs in the five-match series against England. His impressive performance included a double century and two centuries across 10 innings, averaging a remarkable 75.40. This earned him the Player of the Series award. His run tally was the second-highest ever in a World Test Championship tournament. Under his leadership, India overcame deficits twice to draw the series 2-2.
In an exclusive interview with IANS, Ryder praised India's vast pool of talent and shared his thoughts on Gill's first series as captain.
'There's a lot of talent coming through, especially over here in India. There are so many people here. Shubman Gill is a young fellow. England would have been a good learning curve for him," Ryder was quoted as saying to IANS.
After being down 1-2 post the Lord's Test, India showcased remarkable resilience, levelling the Anderson-Tendulkar series 2-2. Mohammed Siraj played a crucial role with his exceptional bowling, finishing as the highest wicket-taker with 23 wickets in five Tests. His figures of 4-86 and 5-125 in the fifth and final Test at The Oval were crucial, especially in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, who missed the final game due to workload management.
When asked about India's next rising star, Ryder identified Yashasvi Jaiswal. Jaiswal started the series with a dominating century at Headingley and concluded with a gritty 118 in the second innings of the deciding match at The Oval, totaling 411 runs across five games.
'India has got a lot of talent coming through, they've got great players like Jaiswal coming through," he added.
Gill also won the ICC Men's Player of the Month for July 2025 following his heroics against England in the thrilling Test series for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.

Karthikeyan upsets Vidit Gujrathi, Vincent Keymer edges closer to maiden title

Agency: Chennai, Aug 13 (PTI) Grandmaster M Karthikeyan eked out a gritty win over compatriot Vidit Gujrathi in round seven of the Chennai Grand Masters as German GM Vincent Keymer strengthened his grip on the title race here on Wednesday. Karthikeyan prevailed with the black pieces over Gujrathi while Keymer registered a clinical win over American GM Awonder Liang, to take a -1.5-point lead. Keymer's nearest challenger, Arjun Erigaisi, was held to a draw by Dutch star Anish Giri, a setback for the Indian's title hopes with only two rounds to play. Elsewhere in the Masters, GM Nihal Sarin defeated GM Ray Robson, while GM Jorden van Foreest and GM V Pranav shared the spoils in a balanced contest. With two rounds remaining, Erigaisi will take on Gujrathi in his must-win penultimate match-up. Erigaisi also needs favourable results elsewhere to keep his title challenge alive. Liang, finding himself in a similar situation to Erigaisi, will tackle Giri. Meanwhile, Keymer can seal his first Chennai Grand Masters title, should he succeed in beating Van Foreest with whites on Day 8. In the Challengers, GM Leon Luke Mendonca stayed in the joint lead after overcoming GM Diptayan Ghosh, while M Pranesh also kept pace at the top with a win over GM R Vaishali. GM Abhimanyu Puranik was held to a draw by GM Aryan Chopra, leaving the former 0.5 behind the joint leaders in the title race. In other results, IM Harshavardhan GB defeated GM Harika Dronavalli, and GM Pa Iniyan split the point with GM Adhiban Baskaran. All Countries Need Not Play Tests, Scarcity Is Test Cricket's Friend: Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg

Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg feels not all nations need to aspire to play Tests, given the financial burden it places on some of the weaker boards and said while there is no definitive number of Test-playing countries, "scarcity in Test cricket is our friend, not our foe." Australia, which hosted a record-breaking Border-Gavaskar Trophy in the 2024-25 season, is set to welcome England for the Ashes later this year. Earlier this month, India and England concluded a highly competitive five-Test series, while Australia and New Zealand recorded lopsided victories against the West Indies and Zimbabwe respectively - outcomes that have reignited debate about the global structure of red-ball cricket. "I don't think there is a right number (of Test playing nations) ... but I think in the future scarcity in Test cricket is our friend, not our foe," Greenberg told reporters. "What I mean by that is, I don't think everyone in world cricket needs to aspire to play Test cricket and that might be OK. "A lot of traditionalists might not like that (and) I'm not suggesting I know the number that will play, but literally we're trying to send countries bankrupt if we force them to play Test cricket." Emphasising the need for meaningful competition, he said: "We need to make sure we invest in the right spaces, play Test cricket where it means something and has jeopardy. "That's why the Ashes will be as enormous and as profitable as it is because it means something ... it means something to every player. "We've got to make sure when we play Test cricket that's at the top of our mind." The International Cricket Council (ICC) recently formed a working group to examine the Test format, and Greenberg expressed his willingness to consider new models, including a two-tier system. "I've got an open mind to that question because I don't know the details to what a two-tiered structure would look like," he said. "Test cricket needs an injection of capital and an injection of resources because it can't just be about Australia, India and England - it needs to be bigger than that. "Red-ball cricket in this country, and in England and in India, is unbelievably successful but it's not like that in all parts of the world. "It's incumbent on us to make sure we play our part to help, so the concept of tiers I think needs to be explored. I'm not prepared to say we're against something until we see all the details," he noted.
