'England Would Have Been A Good Learning Curve': Gill Praised By Former NZ Star
Last Updated: Ex-New Zealand all-rounder Jesse Ryder praised India's Test skipper Shubman Gill for his 754 runs in England, earning Player of the Series. Former New Zealand all-rounder Jesse Ryder believes India's newly-appointed Test skipper Shubman Gill has gained significant experience from the tour of England. Gill had an exceptional July, scoring 754 runs in the five-match series against England. His impressive performance included a double century and two centuries across 10 innings, averaging a remarkable 75.40. This earned him the Player of the Series award. His run tally was the second-highest ever in a World Test Championship tournament. Under his leadership, India overcame deficits twice to draw the series 2-2. In an exclusive interview with IANS, Ryder praised India's vast pool of talent and shared his thoughts on Gill's first series as captain. 'There's a lot of talent coming through, especially over here in India. There are so many people here. Shubman Gill is a young fellow. England would have been a good learning curve for him," Ryder was quoted as saying to IANS. After being down 1-2 post the Lord's Test, India showcased remarkable resilience, levelling the Anderson-Tendulkar series 2-2. Mohammed Siraj played a crucial role with his exceptional bowling, finishing as the highest wicket-taker with 23 wickets in five Tests. His figures of 4-86 and 5-125 in the fifth and final Test at The Oval were crucial, especially in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, who missed the final game due to workload management. When asked about India's next rising star, Ryder identified Yashasvi Jaiswal. Jaiswal started the series with a dominating century at Headingley and concluded with a gritty 118 in the second innings of the deciding match at The Oval, totaling 411 runs across five games. 'India has got a lot of talent coming through, they've got great players like Jaiswal coming through," he added. Gill also won the ICC Men's Player of the Month for July 2025 following his heroics against England in the thrilling Test series for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. UK, Italy, Austria and Germany stop short of condemning Israel over latest Gaza occupation plan
A nine-country statement backed by the foreign ministers of Austria, Germany, Italy, Norway, and the United Kingdom among others says Israel is at "risk" of legal consequences for its decision to occupy Gaza, stopping short of earlier condemnation of the plan by France and Canada. In the statement, the group of European countries said they 'strongly reject' Israel's move to occupy the territory, adding that it would 'aggravate the catastrophic humanitarian situation' and put in further danger the lives of the hostages held by Hamas. "The plans that the government of Israel has announced risk violating international humanitarian law," the statement – which France, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand also joined – reads. "Any attempts at annexation or of settlement extension violate international law." France – which signed up to the latest statement only on Saturday afternoon after Germany, Italy and the UK – said on Friday that it 'strongly condemns' Israel's offensive plan. Canada, which also signed up late, said it 'condemns' the intended occupation in its own earlier statement. 'We reject any unilateral change to the territorial or demographic status of the Gaza Strip', said Beate Meinl-Reisinger, Austria's foreign minister, on social media. The new nine-country intervention, which came after Israel said it had decided to launch a full takeover of Gaza City after months of bombardment, has been met with criticism for not going far enough. Ex-New Zealand PM Helen Clark, whose country signed the European statement, argued opting for 'reject' over 'condemn' blunted the message. 'Why the muted language in face of catastrophe', she asked . On Friday, Germany said it would stop exporting arms to Israel. UPDATE: This story has been updated to include the full list of countries that have signed up to the statement released on Saturday.
