Adolescence 'an important watch', says murdered Holly Newton's mum
The mother of murdered schoolgirl Holly Newton has backed a move to show the TV series Adolescence in schools.Holly, 15, was murdered by her ex-boyfriend Logan MacPhail, who stabbed her to death in a frenzied attack in Northumberland in January 2023 after she ended the relationship.This week the creators of Adolescence Prime Minister Kier Starmer and announced they would make the TV show, which examines the murder of a teenage girl by a teenage boy and explores themes of misogyny, available for free to schools.Speaking about the programme for the first time, Holly's mother Micala Trussler said "it was such a difficult watch but it's an important one at the same time".
MacPhail stalked Holly for almost an hour after she left school on the afternoon of 27 January 2023, before attacking her in an alley next to a pizza shop.MacPhail, who was 16 at the time, had been "filled with resentment" after she ended their relationship, his trial heard.Mrs Trussler said "red flags" about his controlling behaviour were not recognised until it was too late and she had not realised the "emotional turmoil" Holly was being put through when trying to break up with MacPhail.
Starmer had told the makers of Netflix drama Adolescence that it was "really hard to watch" with his teenage children, as he hosted a Downing Street meeting to discuss the influence of toxic material online.Created by writer Jack Thorne and actor Stephen Graham, Adolescence tells the tale of a 13-year-old boy (played by Owen Cooper), who is charged with the killing of a female classmate.
Mrs Trussler said she had "cried all the way through" the four-part drama.She added: "I think it's so important that we don't just look at the victims, but we look at perpetrators as well and what might be causing them to act like this, to act in such violent ways."I think they really got it down to a tee - basically it can happen to anybody."They were just a normal family, but it's the influences they've got not only online but also at home... it's such an important series."
Holly's family have created the charity Holly's Hope, which aims to educate young people about healthy relationships. They have also called for Holly's Law, which would see the age someone can be classed as a victim of domestic abuse lowered to under 16. Mr and Mrs Trussler believe this would help young people access the support they need.The Trusslers were among around 100 guests at Clarence House on Tuesday afternoon, where the Queen cut a birthday cake to mark the 21st anniversary of domestic abuse prevention charity SafeLives.
The Trusslers said the Queen offered her support to the couple.Mrs Trussler said: "She's very interested in our campaign and she's sorry for our loss, and that we shouldn't have to be here doing this.Mr Trussler said: "We feel like it's good because it's getting heard in the highest place in the country essentially."

They also shared a video that showed them embracing while photos taken throughout their relationship were shown on a screen. It began with a sit-down interview with the couple, who were both wearing white shirts while Jasmine showed off her baby bump, speaking about how they might want to raise their future child. 'I ideally want to raise children in a household where our foundation is on 100,' she said. The video then zoomed out and showed Bobby performing a rap, which began: 'I'm happy that you're here with me, Because you be beautiful and that be clear to see, I can feel the love each time you're near to me. 'They said we might not make it here, After such a crazy year, But we just took a leap of faith and dived in with no safety gear. I love it when you're next to me, Connecting intellectually, I was lost but now I'm found, well ever since you rescued me. Netflix on verge of dropping all 8 episodes of dark TV drama 'compared to Ozark'
The TV event of the summer might be just around the corner, with Netflix ready to drop all eight episodes of a new drama that's been compared to Ozark. The Waterfront, which has been created by Dawson's Creek and Scream writer Kevin Williamson, is set for release on June 19, with all episodes dropping at once. A story synopsis provided by Netflix says: 'Set against the backdrop of coastal North Carolina… [The Waterfront] centers on the fictional Buckley family and their crumbling fishing empire.' Starring 90s movie star Holt McCallany, Coyote Ugly actress Maria Bello, and Supergirl legend Mellisa Benoist, The Waterfront 'explores family dynamics and the lengths people will go to when their legacy is on the line'. The series has been in production since May 2024, with the majority of the cast announced later in the year – and now fans are ready to see the whole thing. '[The fishing industry] is being taken away from them bit by bit. [The lead characters] will do anything to hold onto it – it represents their family. They also care about the town, and so many people depend on them.' He continued, talking about the plot, which sees the characters having to make millions of dollars very quickly: 'It's about a bunch of people who make mistakes, they do some bad things, and then they get in deeper and deeper and deeper. 'When you have all these people doing bad things, it's always nice when they do that one good thing that can bring hope back.' Kevin also revealed that the story behind the series is, in part, a personal and autobiographical one, with his father involved in the fishing industry once upon a time. Netflix fans keep watching 'amazing new take on a classic' despite low rating
Fans have been singing its praises despite initial reviews Netflix viewers can't stop watching a 'must see film' that offers a fresh spin on a classic tale. The 2018 release, Robin Hood, has surprisingly become one of the most viewed titles on the platform, despite a meagre 14% rating. At the time of writing, it currently sits in second place in the top ten films most watched by subscribers in the UK. It's sandwiched between recent releases Tyler Perry's Straw in the top spot and French action thriller K.O. in third. Robin Hood is a radical reinterpretation of the timeless story of the outlaw who robbed from the rich to give to the poor. In this version, Taron Egerton, known for his roles in Kingsman, Rocketman and Carry-On, portrays Lord Robin of Loxley. He seeks revenge after returning from the Third Crusade to discover that the corrupt Sheriff of Nottingham, played by Rogue One's Ben Mendelsohn, has declared him dead and seized all his property, reports Surrey Live. According to Empire's review of the film, Robin's journey mirrors that of Bruce Wayne becoming Batman. Egerton's rendition of the character even starts being referred to as 'The Hood'. He is trained by Jamie Foxx's character Yahya or John. Meanwhile, Robin also attempts to win back his girlfriend Marian, played by Eve Hewson, who later starred in Netflix's The Perfect Couple. Marian is now with another man, Will Scarlet, portrayed by Jamie Dornan, who is actually a member of the Merry Men in the original tales. Despite the somewhat tepid critical reception of the film, Netflix audiences have found reasons to be entertained. One admirer took to the internet to express their thoughts, stating: "This is a must see movie. Its a new take and twist of the classic tale of Robin Hood and breathes life into the legend once again. It might not be the most historically accurate remake of the tale but that is part of its charm." They pressed on, saying: "Solid stunts and despite all the hate the movie has endured none can question the hard work and love the whole cast and crew put into it. Their extraordinary archery skills are way beyond just CGI. In fact they were trained by famous archer Lars Anderson and can more than handle themselves around a bow and arrow." Another enthusiast commented: "I thought this film was incredible. An amazing new take on a classic. The immense number of Robin Hood films were starting to repeat one another and it was frankly getting tired, but this brought the movies back alive for younger audiences that perhaps haven't been too engaged in the previous versions. With a brilliant cast, some of which are popular, well known actors, and others who are rising stars, I think the production is incredible." One person even suggested: "Outside of the legendary (Disney) cartoon, this is the best Robin Hood out there." Meanwhile, another voiced a congruent opinion: "It was so much better than expected. It was a different take on the old Robin Hood movies." However, not all viewers were impressed. One disgruntled film-goer echoed the critics' sentiments, stating: "Everything was just as bad as the trailer promised. Don't watch this unwatchable piece of garbage. It will haunt your eyes forever."
