
Hyundai builds local fan base with Japan's first official owner club
Hyundai Motor Club Japan, formed by local owners and enthusiasts of Hyundai vehicles, held its launch ceremony on Sunday in Fujinomiya, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan.
The club, comprised largely of electric vehicle drivers, is expected to become a key channel for sharing Hyundai EV ownership experiences in the Japanese market.
To celebrate the formation of the brand's first overseas fan club, members of Hyundai's existing fan club in Korea and officials from Hyundai Motor Company, including Hyundai Mobility Japan CEO Toshiyuki Shimegi, attended the event.
'The members of Hyundai Motor Club Japan will be a driving force in the development of Hyundai's electric vehicle presence in Japan,' said the CEO. 'We hope EV owners around the world can feel the value of Hyundai's EVs through a lifestyle shared with our brand.'
The company is focusing on Japan's nascent EV market in its second attempt to enter the country's passenger car sector, after withdrawing in 2009 due to sluggish sales of internal combustion engine models.
This time, the company exclusively rolled out electric and fuel cell models. Models currently available in the market include the Ioniq 5, Kona Electric, Casper EV — sold locally as Inster — and the Nexo.
Although Hyundai's annual sales in Japan remain below 1,000 units, the company is gradually building its presence in what is often called a 'graveyard for imported cars' due to the strength of domestic automakers.
In 2024, Hyundai sold 607 vehicles in Japan, up 24 percent from the previous year. During the same period, the country's total EV sales declined by 33 percent to 59,736 units, according to the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association.
In the first half of 2025, Hyundai sold 438 units, equivalent to 70 percent of all sales made in 2024, while the overall EV market contracted another 7 percent year on year.
Hyundai already supports a domestic fan club with over 122,000 members in Korea, and plans to back the newly formed Japanese group, too. It sees the club as a channel for collecting local feedback, better understanding consumer preferences and expanding brand awareness.
'We aim to grow Hyundai's global fandom, not just in Japan, but wherever Hyundai customers are,' a company official said.
'By listening to our customers, we hope to amplify Hyundai's unique values and deliver a better ownership experience.'

Automakers to develop 5 models across Americas, with production starting in 2028 Hyundai Motor Group and General Motors are joining forces in one of the biggest global automotive tie-ups to date. The two companies aim to co-develop five new vehicles — including hybrids, gas-powered models and electric vans — to expand their presence across the entire American market and better navigate US tariff pressures. Hyundai Motor said Thursday it will jointly develop five vehicles with GM. Four, including pickups, a compact car and a small SUV with internal combustion and hybrid options, will be for Central and South America, and one electric commercial van for North America. Production is set to begin in 2028 with an annual capacity of over 800,000 units. Hyundai will lead development of the compact models and electric van, while GM will take charge of the midsize pickup platform. This joint venture, which was first announced in September last year, marks a significant milestone in the strategic partnership between Hyundai, the world's No. 3 automaker by sales, and GM, ranked No. 5. 'Through our strategic partnership with GM … we can provide customers with exceptional design, superior quality, a strong commitment to safety and cutting-edge technology more efficiently than ever before,' said Hyundai Motor Company CEO Jose Munoz. According to a Hyundai Motor Group spokesperson, 'the two companies will work together by exchanging development personnel to jointly create a new vehicle platform.' 'However, specific details regarding the production facilities and the models to be manufactured have yet to be finalized.' Although Hyundai and GM will share common vehicle platforms, 'each company will sell these vehicles under their own brands with unique interior and exterior designs,' stated Shilpan Amin, chief procurement and supply chain officer of General Motors, in a separate press release. A source familiar with the matter, speaking on condition of anonymity, noted, 'While the two companies will each retain the sales revenue from the jointly developed vehicles independently, they will jointly bear the costs and responsibilities of technology development.' Industry watchers indicate that Hyundai and GM are expected to maximize each other's strengths and offset weaknesses to create a win-win partnership. 'On Hyundai's part, it could capitalize on GM's expertise in pickup trucks and car parts sourcing in the US, and GM could benefit from Hyundai's advanced electric, hybrid and compact vehicle technologies,' said Lee Ho-geun, an automotive engineering professor at Daeduk University. Kim Pil-su, a car engineering professor at Daelim University, noted, 'It may look like Hyundai could be giving more than what GM has to offer, considering that the Korean carmaker is poised to target the Latin American pickup market, which is smaller than the US market dominated by GM.' The US is the world's largest pickup truck market. As of last year, it was valued at $77.6 billion and is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 2.3 percent from 2025 to 2034, according to a report by Global Market Insights. Kim explained that by manufacturing jointly developed pickup trucks in GM's automotive plants outside the US, the US auto giant can mitigate the impact of reduced operating rates due to US tariffs. GM currently operates four car manufacturing and assembly plants in Mexico and Canada. 'Hyundai Motor, however, can partly ease US tariff pressures, utilizing GM's well-established auto parts supply chain in the US. This could lower costs in vetting and securing local parts suppliers,' Kim said. Due to 15 percent tariffs on Korean-made cars, the Korean auto manufacturer has been accelerating its plan to expand car parts sourcing in the region. Combining Hyundai's hybrid technology with GM's pickup platform can also strengthen both companies' footing in the global market. The global hybrid pickup market is projected to grow from an estimated $11.5 billion in 2024 to about $25.3 billion by 2033, according to Verified Market Reports.

A recent tourism report reveals that among foreign visitors to Korea last year, tourists from the Middle East spent the most, while Japanese tourists spent the least. According to KB Financial Group's Management Research Institute, foreign tourist spending accounted for 10.5 percent of domestic consumption last year, slightly down from 14.8 percent the previous year but still well above the pre-pandemic level of 3.4 percent. The average per capita spending by foreign tourists was $1,372 (1.9 million won). The most popular purchases for shoppers included perfumes and cosmetics, groceries, clothing, shoes, jewelry and accessories, bags, ginseng and herbal medicine, and Korean Wave products. Spending varied significantly by country. Tourists from the Middle East topped the list with an average expenditure of $2,114, well above the global average. They were followed by tourists from India, France, the UK, Germany and the US. Japanese tourists spent the least at $807, likely due to shorter stays given their geographic proximity.
