School who banned girl's Union Flag dress forced to shut early after threats
Bilton School in Rugby, Warwickshire, said 'extremist abuse' meant they were shutting early, before the last day of school on Friday.
Teachers had put Courtney Wright, 12, into isolation last Friday after she chose to celebrate being British with a Union Jack dress
The decision prompted a wave of backlash after dad Stuart Field posted about what happened on Facebook.
Stuart received dozens of messages of support and won the support of the Prime Minister, MPs, and also Tommy Robinson.
The board of governors and the headteacher also personally said sorry to the 12-year-old.
But a string of threatening messages has forced the school to close before the last day of term on Friday.
In a letter sent to parents, Bilton school said the decision was 'in the interests of student and staff safety' after they experienced 'extremist abuse online and via our telephone systems'.
Staff had also been threatened, explained Ranjit Samra, CEO of Stowe Valley Multi-Academy Trust and headteacher Jayne Delves.
The letter continued: 'The nature and tone of this abuse has escalated in recent days.
'While we have been working closely with our multi-agency partners to address the situation, our primary responsibility remains the safety and wellbeing of every child and member of staff.
'This is not a decision we have taken lightly. We understand the disruption this may cause to your families and your child's education, but the safety of our school community must come first.'
Courtney's dad Stuart had told Metro that he and his daughter were horrified at how events had unfolded.
He said: 'We don't agree with any threats of violence or protests at that school. I am very disgusted by anybody threatening violence at anybody over this whole this.
'We never asked anybody to send out threats of violence.'
The school pupil, who has received hundreds of messages of support from across the world, is also upset that the last day was cancelled.
Stuart added: 'She is sad to miss the last day. These protests have a negative effect on Courtney as well.
'This is not anything that we wanted. We wanted to make people aware about what had happened at the school.'
The row broke out after Bilton School held a 'Culture Day' in which they'encouraged students to consider wearing attire that reflects their nationality or family heritage.'
Dad Stuart said the school's actions went against this message when Courtney was not allowed to wear the dress, which was similar to the one worn by Spice Girl Geri Halliwell at the Brits in 1997. More Trending
She had also written a speech about history and traditions for the day, but was never allowed to deliver it.
A spokesman for Stowe Valley Trust apologised at the time, saying: 'We deeply regret the distress this has caused and offer our sincere and unreserved apologies.
'We have since spoken directly with the pupil and her family to listen to their concerns and reflect on how this could have been handled better.
'We are committed to learning from this experience and ensuring that every student feels recognised and supported when expressing pride in their heritage.'

Farage pledges target to halve crime if Reform enter government

Mr Farage has pledged 12,400 new prison places on MoD land at a cost of £5 billion, and five new 'Nightingale Prisons' to be built with the assistance of the Army. He also wants to see more than 10,000 more prison places freed up by deporting foreign criminals to their country of origin through bilateral agreements, and Mr Farage said he was 'in conversation with Edi Rama', the Albanian prime minister over prisoners. The party also wants prison places overseas in places such as El Salvador, a 'dynamic prisons' policy that the party estimates will cost £1.25 billion over the course of a parliament. Mr Farage said that he would be prepared to take back British criminals who are in foreign prisons as part of his plans. He told reporters at the press conference that 'of course we're prepared to take British prisoners from other parts of the world. 'That's fair, right and proper.' Mr Farage pledged that Monday's event was the start of a six-week campaign on law and order, as Parliament is about to begin its summer recess break.

Benidorm hotel pool fight sees brawlers thrown in water and sunbathers punched
A TikTok clip has gone viral of mayhem by the side of a swimming pool at a Benidorm hotel where at least 10 men were involved in a fight with kicking and punching A massive brawl broke out by the swimming pool at a hotel in a popular Spanish resort with people chucked into the water. Punches were thrown in the ugly scenes at the Benidorm hotel as other tourists watched on in horror at the chaos as more people got involved. The situation quickly escalated with brawlers pushing and shoving, before footage shows a man being launched into the pool. A man dressed in black was shoved while another person in a T-shirt targets a sunbather before he himself ends up in the pool. But he then quickly jumps out and in retaliation shoves another into the water. The clip has gone viral on social media, and has racked up nearly 300,000 views on TikTok. In the melee involving at least 10 men, there were kicks as well as punches while other bathers watched on. An England flag was clearly seen hanging in the background with the words "Ash's Stag 2025", but it is unclear whether the men involved are British, or why the fight broke out in the first place. There has been a mixed response online to the brawl with some joking and others blasting the behaviour as 'embarrassing'. 'How no more, it's Benidorm," one social media user wrote. It comes a month after a 'joke' on a lad's holiday in Benidorm ended up with a dad breaking his neck when he was shoved into a pool. Martin Bullen, 31, described how someone who he didn't know playfully pushed him into the water at a Benidorm pool party on June 10. The single dad-of-two said he tried to turn his fall into a dive but he didn't realise how shallow the water was and he split his head open on the bottom of the pool. Luckily one of the revellers at the party was an army medic who helped get Martin out of the pool and kept him still until an ambulance arrived. Paramedics took Martin, who works as a sales advisor, to a nearby hospital where doctors gave him 16 stitches in his head and found that he had fractured his neck in three places and broken his back. He said that the trip to Benidorm had been intended as a relaxing getaway with his cousins to give Martin a break from being a busy single dad. He said he had gone to book travel insurance before the holiday but he had gotten distracted before paying and forgot to purchase it - a mistake he dubbed 'stupid'. Martin ended up forking out £1,500 for the hospital stay and extra flights - he is urging holidaymakers travelling this summer not to make the same "daft mistake" as him.
