The playmaker has been at City since 2013, rising up through the academy before taking in a double loan spell at Sheffield United.
This season saw McAtee emerge as a rotation player under Guardiola, with the ace netting seven goals in 27 outings.
However, City have numerous attacking options both in midfield and out wide.
Guardiola is also said to be plotting swoops for the likes of Lyon's Rayan Cherki and Nottingham Forest's Morgan Gibbs-White.
And that could see McAtee become available for a transfer away from the Etihad, with United thought to be circling.
Now, speculation regarding his City future has heated up after McAtee was left out of the squad for the Club World Cup.
The tournament runs simultaneously alongside the U21s Euros in Slovakia.
Having initially not been included, McAtee has now been added to England's pre-tournament training squad.

And the Mail claims it means he is unlikely to feature for City ever again, with Guardiola seemingly happy to not have him on board for the lucrative club tournament in America.
To compound things, teammate Rico Lewis was also eligible for U21s selection.

But unlike McAtee, he has not been called up by England as City want him to travel to the Club World Cup instead.
Another factor at play is that McAtee's contract expires in 2026, with City needing to either hand him a new deal or cash in before he becomes a free agent.
Guardiola previously indicated he wanted McAtee to stay, but admitted the youngster could struggle for minutes if he remains at City.
Guardiola in April: 'For the age, I'd like him to stay. But I understand players want more minutes.
'He can play different positions but I don't know how the squad will be and we will see.'

Gary Lineker's The Rest Is Football podcast moves to DAZN following his BBC exit
The partnership will see the hugely popular The Rest Is Football, which is fronted by Lineker alongside Alan Shearer and Micah Richards, include footage of the Club World Cup in the video version of the show. The deal with DAZN, which has rights for this summer's revamped FIFA tournament in the United States, comes after the podcast was removed from the BBC's audio streaming service last week following Lineker's exit from the corporation. The 64-year-old left his presenting role early following a social media row after he shared a post about Zionism which featured a depiction of a rat, historically an antisemitic insult. Lineker, who issued an unreserved apology, will no longer front the BBC's coverage of the 2026 World Cup or the FA Cup next season, with his final appearance on Match of the Day airing on May 25. Pete Oliver, chief executive of growth markets at DAZN, said: 'The Rest Is Football is essential viewing and listening for fans who want insight, entertainment, and personality — and this partnership is a brilliant way to bring the FIFA Club World Cup even closer to that audience. 'It's about connecting global football with the voices fans trust and love, and showing the tournament in a fresh, exciting, and authentically British way.'

Gary Neville left stunned by Liverpool after 'incredible' £10m transfer
Gary Neville has been left stunned by Liverpool raking in £10million for Trent Alexander-Arnold - despite the full-back only having one month remaining on his contract. Real Madrid announced the signing of the full-back ahead of the transfer window opening. Alexander-Arnold, 26, heads to the Spanish capital to link up with Los Blancos in time for the beginning of the Club World Cup. Real have been keen to secure his signature early, and saw an approach to the Reds turned down in January. The new La Liga star has signed a six-year contract at the Bernabeu and Les Merengues handed Liverpool an £8.4m fee. The Reds also save a month of Alexander-Arnold's salary as Real Madrid pick up the tab to see the Anfield side earn a tidy £10m package. The Spanish giants will be relieved to have a right-back at their disposal having seen Federico Valverde and Lucas Vasquez fulfill the role after Dani Carvajal was ruled out for the season. New boss Xabi Alonso will be able to call upon Alexander-Arnold from the beginning of his tenure. Ex-Manchester United captain and Salford City co-owner Neville is in disbelief at the deal. Though, he can understand the thought process the Club World Cup hopefuls went through. "Honestly, no, I mean, I'm stunned by that really, that £10m has changed hands for, but there is £100m pounds at stake in this World Club Championship and Real Madrid have got a great chance of doing it," he said on the It's Called Soccer podcast on the US Overlap channel. "So you imagine if he plays in this tournament, they haven't got a right back that's playing there naturally at this moment in time. So it could be money well spent in four or five weeks. "I just find it crazy that you're spending £10m to have a player for five, six games. It's incredible." Neville has been impressed with Liverpool's work so far this summer. The Reds have signed Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen and look set to add Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez to their ranks too. He said: "I think when you're talking about winning the league, what is it that improves you? I mean, the only thing that's going to improve you when you win the league is signing world-class players, or players that have got the potential to be world-class players. So signing Wirtz is fantastic. "Frimpong and then there's talk of Kerkez as well, deals with their right and left-back situations. So to get those three done, if they were to get those three done quite quickly, would be smart business. But I wouldn't have expected anything else from Liverpool. "Maybe slightly surprised that they've gone so heavy on Wirtz in terms of the fee. They don't normally go that big, but Slot deserves it, by the way. He waited 12 months for a player to sign."
