Why Liverpool WON'T sign Bradley Barcola amid reports of imminent bid for PSG sensation
Liverpool won't sign Barcola Satisfied with Ngumoha's progress Reds face Palace in Community Shield on Sunday Follow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱 WHAT HAPPENED? Earlier on Wednesday, L'Equipe reported that Liverpool are back in the race to sign 22-year-old wide man Barcola this summer, as they continue to face difficulties in their pursuit of Alexander Isak. They have already seen their first bid for the Newcastle star rejected and were said to have now shifted their focus to Barcola and Real Madrid's Rodrygo. THE BIGGER PICTURE The Athletic, however, claims that the Reds are not considering a move for Barcola at the moment, as his arrival at Anfield would affect the progress of youth product Rio Ngumoha. The 16-year-old wonderkid has been impressive in the club's pre-season friendlies and the champions' primary focus is to oversee the growth of the teenager as a player under Arne Slot's tutelage. DID YOU KNOW? Liverpool have already spent almost £300 million ($400m) this summer to strengthen their squad and a transfer for Barcola would probably cost them another €100m (£133.5m). WHAT NEXT FOR LIVERPOOL? Slot's men are now preparing for their first competitive match of the 2024-25 campaign as they take on Crystal Palace in the Community Shield on Sunday.

Seiya Suzuki and Cade Horton help the Cubs stop sweep with 6-1 win over the Reds
CHICAGO (AP) — Seiya Suzuki homered, Cade Horton threw 5 2/3 scoreless innings and the Cubs prevented a sweep from the Reds on Wednesday, winning 6-1. The sixth-inning solo shot was Suzuki's 27th home run of the season, moving him into a tie with teammate Pete Crow-Armstrong for seventh in the majors and fourth in the National League. The outfielder finished 2-for-2 on the day with a pair of RBIs and a walk, also scoring Nico Hoerner on a third-inning sacrifice fly. Horton (6-2, 3.18 ERA) earned the win after giving up only two hits and striking out six. The 23-year-old Horton has not allowed a run in his last 23 1/3 innings, dating back to July 9 against Minnesota. Chicago's win keeps the Cubs (66-48) in position for a Wild Card berth in the NL, while the Reds (60-55) fell to three games behind the New York Mets, who occupy the final spot. Cincinnati starter Andrew Abbott (8-2, 2.34) allowed four earned runs in 6 2/3 innings. The lefty took his first loss since June 4 after the Reds failed to produce a run at the plate until the ninth. Dansby Swanson and Ian Happ padded the lead with solo home runs in the seventh and eighth innings, respectively. Cubs relievers Drew Pomeranz, Andrew Kittredge, Brad Keller and Daniel Palencia held Cincinnati to one run over the final 3 1/3 innings. Palencia picked up his 16th save of the season. Kittredge threw only nine pitches in the top of the seventh inning — all strikes. It was Chicago's first immaculate inning since Sept. 22, 2022, when Hayden Wesneski achieved the fifth such feat in franchise history. Key Stat The Reds had only two baserunners entering the ninth and did not record a walk. Cincinnati scored in the final inning, but the six-run deficit was too large to overcome. Up Next The Reds will travel to Pittsburgh for a four-game series against the Pirates, with Brady Singer (9-8, 4.36) slated to start. Chicago lefty Matthew Boyd (11-4, 2.34 ERA) is set to take the mound on Friday night at the St. Louis Cardinals. ___

Phillies' Kyle Schwarber looming in National League MVP race as Dodgers, Shohei Ohtani struggle
Gambling content 21+. The New York Post may receive an affiliate commission if you sign up through our links. Read our editorial standards for more information. A new contender is creeping into the 2025 National League MVP race. After sitting atop the odds board all season, Shohei Ohtani suddenly has some competition in Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber, who has been red-hot of late. Ohtani is down to -400 to win the award at FanDuel Sportsbook – the lowest he's been in months – while Schwarber is lurking at +300. Schwarber has 15 home runs in his last 30 games, which is three more than any hitter in baseball in that span, catapulting him into the award race. Overall, this season, Schwarber has an NL-leading 40 long balls – two more than Ohtani – while hitting .256/.379/.585. Schwarber's dominant stretch – and the Mets' struggles – have helped boost the Phillies to the top of the NL East, holding on to a 2.5-game lead before Wednesday's slate. Meanwhile, Ohtani hasn't been his otherworldly self over that same 30-game stretch, hitting nine homers while slashing .233/.346/.491, which is a significant step down from his first half of the season. Los Angeles Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani smiles after grounding out during the second inning at the MLB baseball All-Star game between the American League and National League, Tuesday, July 15, 2025, in Atlanta. AP Ohtani has also made just two starts on the mound since the All-Star break after leaving his last start in late July with cramping, although he is scheduled to toss four innings against the Cardinals on Wednesday. Perhaps most importantly, the Dodgers haven't played well of late. Since July 1, they are just 13-16 and are hanging on to just a three-game lead in the NL West over the Padres despite coming into the season with some of the highest expectations for a team in recent history. Learn all you need to know about MLB Betting Last week, we pointed out Cubs outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong as a potential challenger to Ohtani for the NL MVP. But award races can change quickly, and oddsmakers have Schwarber as the one most likely to threaten Ohtani's chances at a fourth MVP in five seasons.
