Asian currencies: Thai baht falls against dollar

BENGALURU: The Thai baht surrendered early gains on Thursday after the commerce minister called for a weaker currency to bolster exports, while the Philippine peso lagged regional peers over mounting political uncertainty in the Southeast Asian country.
Overall, Asian currencies gained on a weak dollar while equities fell.
Thailand's currency fell 0.3% to 32.825 per US dollar after rising 0.5% earlier in the day. Equities in Bangkok traded 0.3% lower.
Pichai Naripthaphan, the country's commerce minister, said he wanted a weaker baht to support exports and that a level of 36-37 per US dollar was more suitable.
The minister said that Thailand's exchange rate policy was not part of ongoing trade negotiations with the United States.
'The intraday reversal likely reflects how sensitive FX markets are to verbal intervention. When a senior policymaker explicitly says the currency needs to weaken, markets take that as a green light,' said Mohit Mirpuri, equity fund manager at SGMC Capital.
'While fundamentals like tourism recovery and current account surplus support the baht medium term, these types of comments can dampen momentum short term.'
The Philippine peso was only marginally higher as mounting political uncertainty in the country capped gains, while stocks fell as much as 1.7% to hit their lowest level since April-end.
Political instability has deepened in the Philippines after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. asked for the resignation of his entire cabinet, following a lackluster performance by his allies in last week's Senate elections.
Maybank analysts see support for the peso, including rising inflows, as the country's economy remains relatively sheltered.
Meanwhile, the central bank of Sri Lanka surprised markets with a 25-basis-point rate cut in a bid to support growth in a country facing lingering economic issues.
The Sri Lankan rupee inched higher while equities in Colombo jumped as much as 0.9% to hit their highest since March 3.
Among other currencies, the Indonesian rupiah, Taiwan dollar and its Singaporean counterpart gained up to 0.4%, 0.3% and 0.1%, respectively.
'Asia EM FX has mainly been lifted by market perception that the US is looking for a weaker dollar versus Asian currencies, as part of its efforts to address its deep trade imbalances with several Asian economies,' said Lloyd Chan, FX strategist at MUFG.
Stocks in Taiwan, Singapore and South Korea slipped 0.6%, 0.1% and 1.2%, respectively.
Investor focus remained on US President Donald Trump's tax bill, set for a congressional vote this week.

UK PM hosts Zelensky in London on eve of US-Russia summit

LONDON: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met Thursday in London with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer in a strong show of support on the eve of a key US-Russia summit from which Kyiv and its European allies have been excluded. Starmer greeted the Ukrainian leader with a warm hug and handshake on the steps of his Downing Street residence, only hours after Zelensky took part in a virtual call with US President Donald Trump. Trump and Vladimir Putin will meet Friday at an air base in Alaska, the first time the Russian leader has been permitted on Western soil since his February 2022 invasion of Ukraine which has killed tens of thousands of people. A stepped-up Russian offensive, and the fact Zelensky has not been invited to the Anchorage meeting Friday, have heightened fears that Trump and Putin could strike a deal that forces painful concessions on Ukraine. But Starmer said Wednesday there was now a 'viable' chance for a ceasefire in Ukraine after more than three years of fighting. Near the front line Thursday, Ukraine fired dozens of drones at Russia overnight into the early morning, wounding three people and sparking fires including at an oil refinery in the southern city of Volgograd. Trump says wants three-way meeting with Putin, Zelensky Kyiv calls the strikes fair retaliation for Moscow's daily missile and drone barrages on its own civilians. With such high stakes, all sides were pushing hard in the hours before Friday's meeting. Three-way meeting? Zelensky, who has refused to surrender territory to Russia, joined the call from Berlin with Trump, as did European leaders who voiced confidence afterward that the US leader would seek a ceasefire rather than concessions by Kyiv. Trump has sent mixed messages, saying he could quickly organise a three-way summit afterward with both Zelensky and Putin, but also warning of his impatience with Putin. 'There may be no second meeting because, if I feel that it's not appropriate to have it because I didn't get the answers that we have to have, then we are not going to have a second meeting,' Trump told reporters on Wednesday. But Trump added: 'If the first one goes okay, we'll have a quick second one,' involving both Putin and Zelensky. Zelensky, after being berated by Trump at a February meeting in the White House, has publicly supported US diplomacy but has made clear his deep scepticism. 'I have told my colleagues – the US president and our European friends – that Putin definitely does not want peace,' Zelensky said. As the war rages on in eastern Ukraine, Zelensky was in Berlin Wednesday joining Chancellor Friedrich Merz on an online call with other European leaders, and the NATO and EU chiefs, to show a united stance against Russia. Starmer on Wednesday said Ukraine's military backers, the so-called Coalition of the Willing, had drawn up workable military plans in case of a ceasefire but were also ready to add pressure on Russia through sanctions. 'For three and a bit years this conflict has been going, we haven't got anywhere near… a viable way of bringing it to a ceasefire,' Starmer told Wednesday's meeting of European leaders. 'Now we do have that chance, because of the work that the (US) president has put in,' he said. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte declared: 'The ball is now in Putin's court.'

Shanghai Composite index flirts with 3,700 level as bullish mood persists

HONG KONG: China stocks edged up on Thursday to a fresh 3-1/2-year high as bullish sentiment continued to build on strong technology gains and renewed investor appetite. At the midday break, the Shanghai Composite index was up 0.2% at 3,690.88 after briefing topping the 3,700 level for the first time since December 2021. The blue-chip CSI300 index was up 0.5%. 'Risk appetite seems to be returning' with margin buying surpassing 2 trillion yuan last seen in the 2015 bull market, Citi analysts said. Delivery of incremental demands-side stimulus is well on track following the Politburo meeting in July, the bank said, as measures such as interest subsidy for consumption loans, mega dam project in Tibet and 'anti-involution' campaign have all helped sentiment. External risks could be largely defused for now' with the U.S.-China tariff truce officially extended to mid-November. In Hong Kong, the benchmark Hang Seng Index weakened 0.1% to 25,597.85. The tech index lost 0.5%. Market heavyweight Tencent briefly touched HK$600 per share for the first time since 2021, after it reports a 15% revenue growth in last quarter on strong gaming performance. Weaker dollar supports copper

LONDON: Copper prices held broadly steady on Wednesday as a weaker dollar helped to extend the support gained from this week's 90-day extension of the tariff truce between the United States and top metals consumer China. Benchmark copper on the London Metal Exchange slipped 0.1% to $9,832 a metric ton in official open-outcry trading. It hit $9,865 on Tuesday and Wednesday, the highest since July 25. 'The 90-day extension for the US-China trade discussions has been welcomed and helped all base metals rise yesterday. Copper is holding onto those gains with the aid of a weaker US dollar,' said Nitesh Shah, commodity strategist at WisdomTree. The dollar hit a two-week low on Wednesday, making dollar-priced commodities more attractive for buyers using other currencies, on bolstered expectations of a Federal Reserve rate cut next month. Sets of data from China due this week may provide clearer direction to base metals as any weakness could bolden the case for economic stimulus, Shah said. China's new yuan loans contracted in July for the first time in 20 years, falling well short of analysts' forecasts. However, outstanding total social financing, used by analysts as a gauge of industrial metals demand, rose 9%, hitting the highest since February 2024. Suspension of production at a major lithium mine by Chinese battery giant CATL earlier this week as it applied to renew its mining licence raised hopes of a broader crackdown on overcapacity in other sectors. 'China has demonstrated its determination to stem 'involution' with the halting of CATL's lithium mine. We are watching to see if China will address copper refining overcapacity through similar measures, which could lend support to prices,' Shah said. LME aluminium rose 0.4% to $2,629.5 a ton in official activity, zinc fell 0.1% to $2,845, lead lost 0.4% to $2,008, tin eased 0.3% to $33,800, while nickel was steady at $15,335.
