Travelers stuck on tarmac after international flights diverted to Alabama
Two Delta planes carrying almost 300 passengers and traveling from Mexico to Atlanta, Georgia, were grounded in Montgomery, Alabama, for several hours.
Two Delta flights from Mexico were diverted to Montgomery, Alabama, due to severe thunderstorms and crew time limits.
Passengers were kept on the planes overnight because Montgomery's airport lacked customs facilities to process international arrivals.
Delta apologized for the inconvenience and issued full refunds to all affected passengers.
Passengers on two Delta flights from Mexico to Atlanta had to spend a night on the tarmac in Alabama due to a confluence of bad weather, crew time limits, and Customs and Border Patrol rules.
Delta Air Lines says Flight 1828 from Cabo San Lucas and Flight 599 from Mexico City were both diverted to Montgomery, Alabama, on Thursday out of safety concerns amid severe thunderstorms. The plan was to continue on to Atlanta once conditions cleared, but the weather -- specifically ongoing lightning in Montgomery -- kept the aircraft there longer than expected and flight crews ran over their allowed duty times.
Because Montgomery Regional Airport doesn't have the Customs and Border Control staffing and facilities for processing their international arrival, passengers had to stay on board their planes until the airport could reach a deal with CBP early the next morning. USA TODAY has reached out to airport for additional details.
Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport would have had the necessary CBP resources, but Delta says it wasn't a diversion option due to severe weather and reports of windshear there.

'We sincerely apologize to our customers for this experience. We fell short of how we aspire to serve and care for our customers amid thunderstorms in the Southeast U.S. Thursday evening,' a Delta spokesperson said in a statement with USA TODAY. 'We are reaching out to each customer with a full refund of their booking.' The airline is also reviewing the incidents to improve future handling and avoid similar situations.
There were nearly 300 passengers on both flights combined.
While onboard overnight, Delta says aircraft doors remained open and snacks, drinks, climate control and restrooms were available to passengers. They were also given additional food and drinks after they were allowed into the airport terminal in Montgomery after 5 a.m.
Both flights continued onto Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport later Friday.
Delta confirmed Flight 1828 left Cabo San Lucas at 5:17 p.m. ET Thursday, arrived in Montgomery at 10:34 p.m. ET Thursday and arrived in Atlanta at 2:05 p.m. ET Friday.
Flight 599 left Mexico City at 6:16 p.m. ET Thursday, arrived in Montgomery at 10:22 p.m. ET Thursday and arrived in Atlanta at 12:46 p.m. ET Friday.
Typically, the direct flights each take between 3.5 to 4 hours, according to flight-tracking website FlightAware
Delta worked with any passengers who missed connecting flights in Atlanta to get them to their final destinations as soon as possible.

A Condor flight from Zurich to Crete experienced multiple diversions and an overnight stay due to severe weather. The flight, initially scheduled for under three hours, ultimately took over 32 hours and returned to Zurich without reaching Crete. A recent Condor flight, which was supposed to take less than three hours, turned into a 32-hour ordeal when poor weather forced multiple diversions, including an overnight stay, according to the Germany-based airline. Even after its extended journey, the flight never reached its final destination. Condor flight DE1234 departed from Zurich, Switzerland, at 6:35 a.m. on May 24 for Heraklion, Crete, in Greece with 137 passengers and six crew members onboard. Typically, the flight time for this route is approximately two and a half hours, but "extreme weather conditions with strong winds" that day restricted the number of take-offs and landings in Crete, Condor spokesperson Johanna Tillmann told USA TODAY in an email statement. "Despite several attempts to land in Heraklion, the flight was unfortunately unable to operate as planned and had to be diverted several times including a night stop in Thessaloniki before finally returning to Zurich," Tillmann continued. What to know: Apple Wallet soon to include passports, but it won't be valid for this type of travel The aircraft made several attempts to land in Crete, but was diverted to other Greek airports. According to FlightAware, the flight flew to Athens before going to the island of Kos, landing at 1:51 p.m. After that, it arrived in Thessaloniki at 5:05 p.m. for an overnight stay. The next day, the flight went to Athens then returned to Zurich at 2:46 p.m. for a total flight time of over 32 hours. The airline said passengers were updated about the flight path via email and text message and given hotel accommodation and grand transport in Thessaloniki. "We sincerely apologize to all affected guests for the inconveniences caused by this," the airline said. "The safety of all guests and crew members is Condor's top priority at all times, as in this case as well." Those who were on the flight are able to reach out to Condor customer service for refund and rebooking options.

Will a hurricane have your name this year? See list for 2025 Atlantic Hurricane season

The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season started this month; thankfully, it was off to a quiet start. According to the National Hurricane Center, no tropical activity is expected in the northern Atlantic, Gulf or Caribbean over the next seven days. However, meteorologists are watching a tropical wave in the Caribbean and two other tropical waves in the Atlantic. Will there be a Tropical Storm Andrea or Hurricane Karen this season? The World Meteorological Organization creates a list of storm names well in advance of the hurricane season. USA TODAY reports that tropical storms get a name when their sustained winds reach 39 mph; they become hurricanes when their winds reach 74 mph. Here are the names for the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, along with how to pronounce them: Andrea: AN-dree uh Barry: BAIR-ree Chantal: shahn-TAHL Dexter: DEHK-ster Erin: AIR-rin Fernand: fair-NAHN Gabrielle: ga-bree-ELL Humberto: oom-BAIR-toh Imelda: ee-MEHL-dah Jerry: JEHR-ee Karen: KAIR-ren Lorenzo: loh-REN-zoh Melissa: meh-LIH-suh Nestor: NES-tor Olga: OAL-guh Pablo: PAHB-lo Rebekah: reh-BEH-kuh Sebastien: se-BAS-tee-en Tanya: TAHN-yuh Van: van Wendy: WEN-dee There are no Q, U, X, Y, or Z names because of the lack of names that begin with those letters. Hurricane names: Where do they come from and how often are they repeated? If all 21 names on the list for that year are used, names from a supplemental list are used. The supplemental list, also approved by the WMO, replaced the use of names using the Greek alphabet in 2021. Forecasters have used the Greek alphabet twice, in 2005 and 2020. In 2005, six names from the Greek alphabet were used. In 2020, with its record 30 named storms, nine names from the Greek alphabet were used. For Atlantic storms, the supplemental list of names is as follows: Adria Braylen Caridad Deshawn Emery Foster Gemma Heath Isla Jacobus Kenzie Lucio Makayla Nolan Orlanda Pax Ronin Sophie Tayshaun Viviana Will All predictions released between March and May forecasted that the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season would see an above-average number of storms. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicts that 13 to 19 named storms will occur. Six to 10 are forecast to become hurricanes, including three to five major hurricanes. In their initial forecast released in early April, experts from Colorado State University said an active Atlantic hurricane season is likely. They predicted as many as 17 storms and said nine will become hurricanes, including four major hurricanes. AccuWeather predicted the Atlantic hurricane season could bring 13 to 18 named storms, with 7 to 10 hurricanes. They also expect 3 to 5 major hurricanes. Finally, Dr. Ryan Truchelut, chief meteorologist with WeatherTiger, predicted the 2025 season will see: 16 - 21 tropical storms 7 - 9 hurricanes 3 - 4 major hurricanes The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season was above average. Five hurricanes and one unnamed subtropical storm made landfall in the U.S. in 2024, three of which made landfall in Florida. 18 named storms 11 hurricanes 5 major hurricanes Three hurricanes made landfall in Florida: Debby, Helene, and Milton. Aventura Mall voted "Best Mall in America," USA TODAY poll

The people have spoken and America's best mall is right here in South Florida. Sawgrass Mills in Sunrise? Nope. The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale? Not quite. It's the Aventura Mall, which has been voted the Best Mall in America in the USA TODAY 10Best Readers' Choice Awards. The publication points out that Aventura Mall, the largest mall in Florida, has more than 300 retail shops, experiences, and dining options. It also boasts a "museum-worthy art collection and regularly hosts community events such as story time, weekly yoga, and a farmers market." The mall is so popular, Brightline has added a station nearby. "We take great pride in Aventura Mall's continued position as the best mall for iconic brands and first-to-market experiences, helping define South Florida's place on the national and international stage," Jackie Soffer, chairman and CEO of Turnberry, owner of Aventura Mall, said. "Strategically located between Miami and Fort Lauderdale, Aventura Mall draws a diverse, global audience ranging from international tourists to Gen Z and Millennial locals and tourists," according to USA Today. Nominees were selected by a panel of experts and then ranked based on votes from the public, according to USA Today. Aventura Mall was one of only 20 malls selected nationwide, and the only South Florida mall to be nominated. So who rounded out the top 5? Let's take a look. Coming in at number two was the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota. It noted that with 500-plus stores and dozens of restaurants, visitors can find just about everything at this mall. "As the largest mall in the U.S., the Mall of America is not only a shopping and entertainment complex, but one of the top tourist destinations in the country. Every year, 32 million people visit this mall's stores, restaurants, attractions, and hotels. At the center of the mall is Nickelodeon Universe, the largest indoor theme park in America," according to USA TODAY. A mall in the Lone Star state came in at number 3 - Galleria Dallas. Along with a variety of retail stores and more than 30 casual and sit-down restaurants, it also boasts its own indoor ice rink. "The large indoor ice rink is at the center of this three-story mall, and while it stays open year-round, it's especially festive during the holiday season," according to USA TODAY. An urban oasis in the heart of Manhattan, New York landed in the number four position. The Shops & Restaurants at Hudson Yards "occupies a million square feet of retail, restaurant, and entertainment space, and features a unique indoor-outdoor setup that makes the most of its Hudson River views." Rounding out the top 5 is the King of Prussia Mall inn Prussia, Pennsylvania. It features 450 retail locations and dining options range that from pizza joints and dim sum to steakhouses. "This mall offers a diverse range of national brands and specialty stores, and those seeking luxury goods can shop at a vast number of luxury retailers like Gucci, Cartier, Dior, and Balenciaga," USA TODAY said. Rounding out the remaining five are the Scottsdale Fashion Square in Scottsdale, Arizona; American Dream in East Rutherford, New Jersey; Grapevine Mills in Grapevine, Texas; Tysons Corner Center in Tysons, Virginia and Brookfield Place in New York City.
