Italian luxury fashion house Prada has been facing severe online backlash after its latest collection showcased men's sandals resembling India's traditional Kolhapuri chappals.
Edelweiss Mutual Funds CEO and MD Radhika Gupta weighed in on the ongoing controversy, highlighting the importance of acknowledging original creators and preserving India's textile heritage.
In a post on social media platform X, Gupta wrote, '500 rupee chappal sold for 1 lakh, without any credit!' highlighting her anger over the lack of acknowledgment for Indian craftsmanship.
'This is why I am obsessed with wearing and talking about handlooms.
Every child knows who Prada and Gucci are, but very few in a room know a Himroo, Sambalpuri or Narayanpet. Our textile heritage and craftsmanship is for us to preserve, brand and benefit from,' she added.
Concluding her post, she wrote, 'As for Prada... Remember that till the lion learns to write, all stories will always glorify the hunter.'
The criticism follows Prada's Milan fashion show, where the brand presented open-toe sandals that closely resembled Kolhapuris but did not credit Indian artisans or traditions.

MACCIA, in a letter dated June 30, proposed setting up a joint working group with Prada and local artisan organisations. The aim is to discuss co-branded limited-edition collections, global-standard skill development, and cultural exchange efforts to ensure due recognition and benefits for Kolhapuri artisans.

Buenos Aires: India-Argentina ties are expected to get a major boost during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the South American nation starting Saturday, India time, Ajaneesh Kumar, the Indian Ambassador to Argentina, said in an exclusive interview with the IANS. "This visit is important from a bilateral lens. Although PM Modi has been here before in 2018, it was for the G20 Summit. This bilateral meeting that's happening between us will take place after five decades on an official level, where the Indian PM is visiting Argentina in this capacity," said Kumar. Argentina would be the third leg of PM Modi's five-nation visit after Ghana and Trinidad and Tobago (T&T). It will be followed by visits to Brazil (July 5-8) and Namibia (July 9). PM Modi has travelled earlier to Argentina for a G20 meeting in 2018, but this will be the first bilateral visit by an Indian PM in the last 57 years and therefore remains historic. As part of the programme, the Prime Minister would start the visit by paying respects at the statue of General Jose de San Martin, Argentina's revered freedom fighter and national hero. The Prime Minister will then be accorded a ceremonial welcome and have delegation-level talks, followed by a lunch hosted in his honour by the country's President Javier Milei. Argentina is a strategic partner of India since 2019 and the two countries celebrated 75 years of diplomatic relations last year. "In the evening, while returning, he'll take out a few minutes of his busy schedule and visit the Boca Stadium, because sports helps the people-to-people contact of both nations, and Argentina is known for its football across the world," added Kumar. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), both leaders will discuss subjects of economic and trade interest to further strengthen bilateral relations. Quite significantly, India-Argentina bilateral trade has more than doubled in three years from 2019 to 2022, peaking at USD 6.4 billion in 2022. In 2021 and 2022, India was Argentina's fourth largest trading partner. Argentina is one of the prime suppliers of edible oils – soybean and sunflower – to India. In 2024, total annual bilateral trade between India and Argentina rose by 33 per cent to USD 5.23 billion, positioning India as Argentina's fifth-largest trading partner and export destination.

New Delhi: India's high-level official delegation, led by chief negotiator Rajesh Agrawal, has returned from Washington after the trade talks with US officials without reaching a final agreement on the sensitive issue of trade in agricultural and dairy products that the US is pushing for. However, there is still a glimmer of hope that an interim bilateral trade agreement may be reached at the highest political level in the two countries before the July 9 deadline for the 26 per cent hike in US tariffs on Indian exports to kick in. The Indian team was in Washington for negotiations on an interim trade agreement with the US from June 26 to July 2. The US is seeking broader market access for its agricultural and dairy products, which is a major hurdle, as for India, this is a livelihood issue of the country's small farmers and hence is considered a sensitive area. While India is looking to secure an exemption from President Donald Trump's 26 per cent tariffs by concluding an interim deal before July 9, it is also pushing for significant tariff concessions for its labour-intensive exports such as textiles, leather and footwear. Meanwhile, President Trump has announced that the US administration will start sending letters informing trading partners of their tariff rates as soon as Friday, even as negotiations with various countries, including India, to avoid higher US levies have stretched into the last lap. Trump told journalists late on Thursday that about "10 to 12 countries will get letters on Friday" with additional letters coming "over the next few days". He said that the tariffs will range in value from 60 per cent to 70 per cent and 10 per cent to 20 per cent, which these countries will have to start paying from August 1, to do business with the US. "I'd rather just do a simple deal where you can maintain it and control it. You're going to pay a 20 per cent or 30 per cent tariff, and we're going to be sending some letters out, starting probably tomorrow, maybe 10 a day, to various countries, saying what they're going to pay to do business with the US," he added. Trump has announced a number of trade deals, including with Vietnam and China. He had stated last month that the US and India may sign an agreement that will open up India for US goods.

Asked about US President Donald Trump's July 9 deadline, Goyal said India does not do trade deals with deadlines in mind. Goyal's comments assume significance at a time when both India and the US are looking to finalise an interim trade deal before next week. 'India never makes a trade deal based on a deadline or timeline; when the deal is good, fully matured, and in the national interest, then we accept it,' he said. 'India discusses on its own terms, discussions are ongoing with various countries. Whether it is the European Union, New Zealand, Oman, the United States, Chile, or Peru, negotiations for agreements are underway with many countries,' Goyal said. 'A free trade agreement happens only when there is mutual benefit. When the deal is made while safeguarding India's interests, keeping in mind that national interest will always remain paramount, then India is always ready to make deals with developed countries,' he added. However, negotiations are ongoing as certain matters in agriculture and automotive sectors require further resolution, an official told PTI. The Indian delegation conducted negotiations in Washington regarding an interim trade agreement with the United States from June 26 - July 2. The delegation was headed by chief negotiator and special secretary in the commerce department, Rajesh Agrawal. The official indicated that negotiations are in their final stages, with an announcement anticipated before July 9, coinciding with the conclusion of the 90-day suspension period of Donald Trump-era tariffs affecting various countries, including India. The official said: "Indian team is back from Washington. Negotiations will continue. There are certain issues which need to be resolved in agriculture and auto sectors." What India & US Want The United States implemented an additional 26 per cent reciprocal tariff on Indian products on April 2, though it was suspended for 90 days. The baseline 10 per cent American tariff continues to be effective. India seeks complete relief from the supplementary 26 per cent duty. India's requests include duty concessions for its labour-intensive industries, encompassing textiles, gems and jewellery, leather products, garments, plastics, chemicals, shrimp, oil seeds, grapes and bananas within the suggested trade agreement. In the agricultural domain, the United States seeks reduced duties on products including dairy items, apples, tree nuts, and genetically modified crops. Given the political sensitivities surrounding agriculture, India faces significant obstacles in offering any duty reductions in this sector. The United States is requesting duty reductions on specific industrial products, including automobiles (particularly electric vehicles), wines and petrochemical items. Both nations aim to finalise discussions for the initial phase of the proposed bilateral trade agreement (BTA) by fall (September-October) this year. The agreement targets increasing bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030, up from the present $191 billion. An interim trade agreement is being pursued before the first tranche. The American delegation visited for negotiations last month. India's merchandise exports to the United States increased by 21.78 per cent to $17.25 billion during April-May this fiscal, whilst imports grew by 25.8 per cent to $8.87 billion.
