Strengthening parish service
Fr Dr Clarence Devadass sharing the insights of procedural responsibilities and pastoral care.
By Amanda PumalaA Chancery Training and Formation session for parish office administrators was held at the Archdiocesan Pastoral Centre, June 21. Organised by the Chancery Office of the Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur, the event brought together 48 participants from 36 parishes. The session aimed to strengthen the foundations of parish communities by affirming the vital role and service of those who manage parish administration. Fr Dr Clarence Devadass, Chancellor of the Archdiocese, led the training, offering guidance and insight into both procedural responsibilities and pastoral care. Participants explored their vocation as Parish Office Administrators — a role that demands interaction with people through phone calls, walk-ins, and emails, both locally, within the diocese, and beyond. They serve as important representatives of the Catholic Church, carrying the Church's mission forward in everyday encounters. The session featured discussions on challenges faced by priests and administrators alike. Attendees were invited to reflect on the practical struggles of managing inquiries and requests and to collaborate on solutions. Emphasis was placed on proactive empathetic service: resolving issues, guiding parishioners, and implementing positive change within the Church community. Equally significant was the opportunity for administrators to connect in person. Many participants had long worked alongside one another by phone or email, but had never met face-to-face. This formation created space for conversation and mutual understanding, strengthening collaboration across parishes. Feedback following the training was overwhelmingly positive. Joan Bernadette from Christ the Light parish described the event as 'an inspiring and supportive session.' Margaret Raj from the Church of the Good Shepherd remarked that 'it was indeed a very fruitful session.' Daisy Raj from the Church of the Holy Rosary found 'the formation was informative.'
The Chancery Training and Formation session achieved its goal: it renewed parish office administrators' sense of calling, enhanced their practical and pastoral competencies, and fostered connections that will enrich Catholic communities throughout the archdiocese.

Church: New contractor takes over
Published on: Tuesday, July 29, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 29, 2025 By: Lorena Binisol Text Size: The front of the Gothic-style six-storey church. Credit: PUTATAN: With RM8 million spent since construction started in 2013, the Catholic faithful are still hoping that the St Catherine Laboure Church site at Kg Imbaan, Putatan, will be completed in due course. It is understood that an injection of at least another RM6 million would be necessary, thus making it one of the most expensive churches to be built in Malaysia and possibly in Sabah. One thing for sure – it would be the first six-storey church in the nation. A special blessing and handover ceremony to new contractor (Macromax Enterprise) was led and witnessed by Archbishop Datuk John Wong of the Archdiocese of Kota Kinabalu. The Gothic-style six-storey church was built on donated ancestral land. Subscribe or LOG IN to access this article. Pope encourages Pax Christi to continue to promote nonviolence
Pope encourages Pax Christi to continue to promote nonviolence In a message to participants in Pax Christi USA's annual National Assembly, Pope Leo says 'efforts to promote nonviolence are all the more necessary' in a world facing the challenges including war, division, and forced migration. Jul 27, 2025 Pope Leo (file photo) By Christopher Wells 'In the midst of the many challenges facing our world at this time, including widespread armed conflict, division among peoples, and the challenges of forced migration, efforts to promote nonviolence are all the more necessary,' says Pope Leo XIV in a message to the National Assembly of Pax Christi USA. The US branch of the international Catholic peace movement is meeting in Detroit, Michigan, this weekend (25-27 July) for a conference focused on 'Reclaiming the power of nonviolence in a broken world'. In his message, which was read to participants during opening ceremonies on Friday night, Pope Leo invited participants to recall that 'after the violence of the Crucifixion, the Risen Christ's first words to the Apostles offered peace,' a peace that is 'unarmed and disarming, humble and persevering'. Jesus, he continued, 'continues to send His followers into the world to become creators of peace in their daily lives'. Therefore 'it is all the more important for a Church capable of reconciliation to be present and visible' in parishes, neighbourhoods, and especially on the peripheries of society. Pope Leo expressed his hope that the National Conference would inspire members of Pax Christi USA to work to make their local communities ''houses of peace' where one learns how to defuse hostility through dialogue, where justice is practiced and forgiveness is cherished'. By doing so, he said, 'you will enable many more people to embrace Saint Paul's invitation to live at peace with their brothers and sisters'. The Holy Father concluded his Message by entrusting the Assembly to the intercession of Mary, Mother of the Church and imparting his Apostolic Blessing to participants.--Vatican News

Over 10,000 Catholics join St Anne feast night procession in Bukit Mertajam
BUKIT MERTAJAM: More than 10,000 Catholic devotees filled the grounds of the Minor Basilica of St Anne for the annual Feast of St Anne night procession, marking the pinnacle of a 10-day religious celebration. The event, the largest of its kind in Malaysia, saw participants gather from early evening for Mass before the candlelit procession began at 8.30pm. The procession featured a float carrying the statue of St Anne and her daughter Mary, with devotees walking alongside while holding candles. The 1.6 km route passed through Jalan Kulim, Jalan Kampung Baru, and Jalan Berjaya before returning to the church at 11pm. For many, the event was a time to fulfill vows and seek divine intervention. R Thivya Bharti, 32, attended with her family after her husband recovered from illness last year. 'We prayed for his health, and by God's grace, he was healed. Now we're here to give thanks and pray for another child,' she said. Diana Blomindas, 29, from Ipoh, noted the celebrations were livelier this year, with more stalls and visitors. She recalled attending since childhood and came this year to pray for her mother's healing from knee pain. Valentina Kaur, 28, and her husband joined the procession to express gratitude after conceiving following years of prayers. 'I prayed for a child in March, and two months later, I was pregnant. Tonight, we give thanks and pray for a smooth pregnancy,' she shared. The feast, themed 'Celebrating, Listening and Walking as Pilgrims of Hope,' began on July 18 with nine days of Novena prayers. The Minor Basilica, built in the 1800s, is the first of its kind in Southeast Asia and was elevated to basilica status in 2019. - Bernama
