The Block judges slam team over 'upmarket nursing home' room

After facing a series of setbacks and unique challenges in the first week of the competition, this year's contestants on The Block were handed a mammoth task in week two. Not only did they have to renovate two kids bedrooms, but they also had to upholster a bedhead that would be showcased in one of the rooms. There was plenty on the line this week, with the winners receiving around $175,000 worth of appliances from e&s in addition to the $10,000 prize. With all five teams having the exact same layout, timeframe, and suggested budget of $15,000, here's what they each presented to the judges. They received some criticism in their second room for the functionality and wall panelling, which was a 'last-minute mistake' because they didn't have enough wallpaper. 'They delivered exactly what I would expect from a Block bedroom,' Darren Palmer remarked. Shaynna Blaze said their styling was 'not functional', 'overwhelming', and 'too much', but complimented the cloud bedhead, artwork and furniture. 'It's different, it's igniting. These girls have creativity, and they've gone out on a limb,' Shaynna shared. They had a similar reaction to the second bedroom, and Shaynna said they were nailing the modern contemporary country theme. 'It feels extremely luxurious, it'll shoot beautifully. I truly believe this has been hit out of the ball park,' Marty Fox said, adding that the level of sophistication was similar to 2023 champions Steph and Gian. They also argued that the couple missed the brief in the second bedroom and didn't design it for kids; however, Sonny and Alicia said they were playing the long game and want to appeal to a broad range of buyers. 'I am enamoured with everything I see on that wall and in front of it. I'm really, really impressed,' Darren gushed. The judges said their first bedroom had a great 'sense of fun', but their second bedroom was like walking into an 'upmarket nursing home', 'Boys, what have you done?' Shaynna questioned. 'It's gone to a very old styling aesthetic.' Ultimately, it was Britt and Taz who took out the win with a score of 28, with Emma and Ben coming in second place on 25.5. The podcast host has been petitioning for her mother to be cast on the series for quite a while, admitting in 2023 that she would love for her 'single, hot' mum to star in an Australian version of The Golden Bachelor. She also proposed a similar concept in 2021, writing on her Instagram Story: 'Petition for mum to be a 61-year-old Bachelorette'.
