Ian McLauchlan, Scotland and Lions great, dies at 83
Ian McLauchlan, the former Scotland captain and part of the successful British & Irish Lions tours to New Zealand and South Africa in 1971 and 1974, has died at the age of 83.
The prop, who led his country 19 times in his 43 appearances, played his last Test against New Zealand at Murrayfield in November 1979. Weighing 14st 6lb (91.6kg) on his debut in 1969, McLauchlan earned the nickname 'Mighty Mouse'.

He was one of five tourists to start all eight Lions Tests on those two tours, and scored a crucial try as the Lions won 9-3 the first Test in Dunedin in June 1971.
Andy Irvine, a fellow former Scottish Rugby President and teammate of McLauchlan's for both Scotland and the Lions, paid tribute on the Scottish Rugby website. 'He was some character and some player. He was smaller than most props he came up against but I never saw anyone get the better of him. He was so tough, almost indestructible. What a fantastic career he had for Scotland, and the Lions; it's very, very sad.'
McLauchlan served as Scottish Rugby's president from 2010-2012. In 2013, he was inducted to Scottish Rugby's Hall of Fame and in 2017 he was awarded an OBE in the new year honours list. Scottish Rugby said it was 'immensely saddened' to learn of his death on Friday.

Panthers' watershed win comes at a cost
Penrith's best win of the NRL season has come at a cost with Scott Sorensen handed a two-game suspension for the tackle that injured Warriors winger Dallin Watene-Zelezniak. Second-rower Sorensen was not penalised on-field for his hip-drop style shot from the first half of Penrith's 28-18 win in Auckland. The tackle left Watene-Zelezniak with a syndesmosis injury, with the Panthers scoring their second try while the winger was hobbling in backplay and unable to defend in position. Watene-Zelezniak then watched from the dressing sheds as his former side waged a huge upset without their five NSW stars. On Sunday morning, the match review committee handed four-time premiership winner Sorensen a grade-two dangerous contact charge for his tackle. It means Sorensen will sit out of next week's match against ladder leaders Canterbury and the rivalry clash with Parramatta by accepting an early guilty plea. If he unsuccessfully disputes his charge, Sorensen will miss a further match against South Sydney. But a challenge appears unlikely given the 32-year-old has already lost one judiciary hearing this season. Sorensen also received a grade-one careless high tackle charge for a shot on Warriors fullback Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad but can accept a $1800 fine. The defeat of the fourth-placed Warriors was only Sorensen's third match back from a three-game suspension for his shoulder charge on Manly forward Nathan Brown. The Panthers' five State of Origin representatives will return to face the Bulldogs on Thursday night, with Isaiah Papali'i and Luke Garner both options to start in Sorensen's absence.

Foul-mouthed fan's whopping footy ban
An A-grade rugby league clash in Darwin has been marred by a spectator hurling abuse at the referee and opposition players, earning them a years-long ban from the sport. The Darwin Brothers supporter received a 30-month ban following the incident during the second half of a top-of-the-table match between the Litchfield Bears and Brothers at TRL Stadium on July 13. The outburst came moments after the Brothers had brought the score to 20-18, with abusive comments of a personal nature directed at the referee visiting from Queensland, The NT News reports. The comments were reportedly shouted from the hill behind the goalposts. The referee called time off at 61:39 on the clock, informing both captains of the abuse. Security and match officials worked to calm the crowd before the game resumed several minutes later, with the Bears eventually edging out a 28-26 victory. Darwin Brothers president John Adams told NT News his club did not condone such behaviour. 'Our club doesn't condone any sort of abuse, verbal or otherwise, towards the officials,' Mr Adams said. NRL NT general manager Tony Crowe also backed the referee's decision to halt play. 'It was a close game between the top of the table sides, but we 100 per cent support the referee's decision to pause the match,' Mr Crowe said. 'We've all come here to enjoy rugby league, not listen to some individual that thinks their opinion is above everyone else's, particularly when it's in a negative manner toward a match official. 'The NRL NT is currently working through the process, we've got a number of reports from the referee and ground managers and due process will follow.' The spectator was banned for 12 months for abusing the referee, 12 months for abusing opposition players, and an additional six months for bringing the game into disrepute. In a separate incident, a spectator in Katherine was banned for 12 months for using obscene or offensive language toward a junior referee and for conduct that discredits the game. NRL NT operations manager Sheron McDougall condemned the behaviour. 'It's a timely reminder to all clubs and participants that we need to be mindful this is a sport and we have a responsibility to abide by the code of conduct,' Mr McDougall said. 'We're drawing a line in the sand, it won't be tolerated, we hope these matters can be solved without a game being paused but the referee is well within their right to do so and we support that. 'This is happening across all sports and we have to be mindful, we do need these match officials to keep our game going.'
