Labubu craze turns costly as thieves swipe Rs 26 lakh worth of plush toys from LA store

Time of India2 days ago
A group of burglars broke into
One Stop Sales
in La Puente, a city east of Los Angeles, in the early hours of Wednesday. Their haul? Thousands of dollars' worth of
Labubu dolls
, the mischievous, fluffy creatures that have taken the world by storm this year.
The
Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department
responded to the
burglary
at 1:29 a.m. Deputies found several boxes of Labubu dolls stolen, valued by police at around $7,000. But
Joanna Avendano
, co-owner of the store, told ABC News Local 7 the loss was far greater. 'There was a lot taken, maybe like around $30,000 or more of inventory,' she said.

'We worked so hard to get to this point, and for them to just come in and, like nothing, take it all away, it's really bad,' Avendano added.

A break-in that seemed planned
What stands out is how the burglars zeroed in on the Labubus alone. They bypassed other items in the store, focusing solely on these dolls. Avendano suspects the theft was premeditated. 'A suspicious truck was parked outside the store on Tuesday night,' she said. 'I suspect the burglars were monitoring the store's social media account, as we had just announced a restock in Labubus, which are selling quickly.'
The store shared security footage on Instagram showing four masked men breaking in, smashing glass, and hauling boxes of the sought-after dolls. 'Today we got robbed, and they took all of our inventory trashed our store, we are still in shock, if you guys can share this post please and help us find these thief's!' the store wrote on social media.

Why are labubu dolls so valuable?
Labubu dolls come exclusively from Pop Mart, a Chinese retailer known for its 'blind box'
collectibles
. Buyers purchase boxes without knowing which design or colour of Labubu they will receive, which adds a thrill to collecting.
The dolls retail at up to $500 each on the store's website. This price tag has sparked a frenzy among collectors, pushing resale values even higher—often by thousands of dollars. The craze has also bred a
black market
for fake Labubus.
Celebrity endorsements have propelled the trend further. Stars such as Rihanna and Lisa from K-pop sensation Blackpink have been seen with the dolls, turning them into must-have fashion accessories. Fans often clip these quirky plush toys to handbags or backpacks.
This burglary isn't just about
stolen merchandise
. It highlights a growing issue: when viral trends skyrocket, they can attract unwanted attention, including crime. The Labubu dolls have become more than toys—they're prized collectibles, status symbols, and now, targets.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department confirmed an investigation is underway. They appealed for anyone with information to step forward. Meanwhile, One Stop Sales continues to cope with the loss and hopes to rebuild after what Avendano called a devastating theft.

‘Hello, mei Virat bol raha hun...': Call from Kohli leaves Chhattisgarh youth dazed; police later collect VIP SIM, return it to Rajat Patidar

RAIPUR: Hello, mei Virat bol raha hun (Hello, I am Virat here)...A youth from a non-descript village in Chhattisgarh is besieged with calls from cricket fans and celebrities like Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers . The issue is that the Gariabandh youth has been allotted a mobile number used by international cricketer and RCB captain Rajat Patidar owing to a technical glitch. Manish Bisi, 21, a resident of Madagaon village, began receiving calls from Kohli, Yash Dayal, and de Villiers after the number, which had been inactive for nearly six months, was re-assigned to him in a routine process, said Gariaband superintendent of police Nikhil Rakhecha. The number, a WhatsApp account, had likely been unused for over six months, and according to company rules, was re-allocated to another customer, potentially leading to its assignment to the Devbhog youth. "We have now returned the number to cricketer Rajat Patidar," the SP said. Manish, an avid fan of Virat Kohli, purchased a new SIM card from a mobile shop in Devbhog during the last week of June and was allotted the number used by Rajat. His friend, Khemraj Bisi, assisted him in installing WhatsApp on the new number a week later. While configuring the WhatsApp, the profile picture automatically displayed Rajat Patidar's photo, which the youths initially dismissed as a software glitch. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like New Container Houses Palestinian Territory (Prices May Surprise You) Container House | Search ads Search Now Undo Subsequently, Manish started receiving calls from unknown numbers. CG youths expressed hope of meeting Patidar in person Subsequently, Manish started receiving calls from unknown numbers, with callers introducing themselves as various cricketers attempting to reach Rajat Patidar and addressing the youths by his name. Assuming it was a prank, the youths engaged with the callers in a light-hearted manner for about a fortnight. The situation took a new turn when Rajat Patidar, unable to use his old number, contacted the Madhya Pradesh Cyber Cell. The Madhya Pradesh police then liaised with Gariaband police to rectify the issue. A police team visited the village and requested Manish to return the SIM card, which has since been sent to Patidar's address. The youths expressed hope of meeting Rajat Patidar in person, describing the incident as an unforgettable experience. The Devbhog station house officer stated that the SIM card was sent to the cricketer by post. Cricketer Rajat Patidar plays for MP in domestic cricket. "The Devbhog police came to us and asked for the SIM card back, saying it belonged to a VIP. We returned it to them," Khemraj said. "One day, a call was received from another number. The caller identified himself as Rajat Patidar. We took this call as a joke, just like we had done with the earlier ones. Rajat kept requesting SIM back, but we continued to make fun of him. Then he said, 'I'll send the police,' and about 10 mins later, the police arrived," Khemraj said. tnn Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
