George Russell mocks Max Verstappen after beating F1 rival to Canadian GP pole

Max Verstappen was denied pole for the Canadian Grand Prix by George Russell who made it clear he thinks he has an advantage over the Red Bull racer at the first corner on Sunday George Russell secured pole in Montreal for the second successive year with a mighty lap which denied Max Verstappen. And the Brit reacted by cracking a joke at the Dutchman's expense with Verstappen just one penalty point away from a race ban after their collision in Barcelona two weeks ago. Aware of that, Russell said he felt confident about going into the first corner wheel to wheel with the four-time Formula 1 champion tonight. "I've got a few more points on my licence to play with," he smirked, drawing some cheers but also audible boos from fans in the stands at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. ‌ Verstappen had knocked championship leader Oscar Piastri off the top of the leaderboard but then Russell snatched his sixth career pole. The Brit said: "To be honest that last lap was probably one of the most exhilarating laps of my life. ‌ "I got into the last corner and I was six tenths up and I was like, 'This lap is mighty'. Crossing the line and seeing we were P1 was a real surprise, but I was so chuffed with it." Russell had whooped with delight over the radio after his pole was confirmed and shouted: "What a f****** lap!" Speaking on Sky Sports, 2016 World champion with Mercedes Nico Rosberg said: "We just witnessed something very, very special. This is amazing. That car is not supposed to be that far in front. Hats off." Verstappen will have the advantage of starting on the cleaner side of the track but said: "I would always pick P1 because you start a little bit more forward, but it's fine. We'll see what we can do tomorrow. I felt quite good all weekend and the car was in a good window. Overall, I'm very happy with qualifying. I think the car was again working quite well." ‌ Championship leader Piastri has four poles to his name this year but had to settle for third place on the grid. He was still pleased, though, no doubt made to feel better by the fact team-mate and title rival Lando Norris was way down in seventh having struggled throughout qualifying. The Aussie said: "To be honest, after how practice went I'm really happy with myself at the moment. It was a nice turnaround. I'm pretty happy with third, which is a bit different this year but I'll definitely take it here." But a glum Norris said: "Not ideal! Too many mistakes, and I hit the wall in the last lap. The car felt good today, I just made too many mistakes." Lewis Hamilton matched his best Grand Prix qualifying result of 2025 so far by going fifth fastest for Ferrari, behind rookie Kimi Antonelli. But team-mate Charles Leclerc got stuck in dirty air on his final lap having set the quickest first sector time and had to settle for just eighth.

World Cup misery for England as Littler and Humphries are knocked out in Germany

Luke Littler and Luke Humphries suffered World Cup misery as England's hopes of retaining the World Cup were torn apart by Germany. The world's top two players slipped to an 8-4 second round defeat at the Eissporthalle in Frankfurt, where Martin Schindler and Ricardo Pietreczko made the most of the backing of a partisan home crowd to seal a comprehensive victory. Littler and Humphries, who both received MBEs in the King's Birthday Honours, were made to pay for missed doubles with the 18-year-old in particular turning in an off-colour display in a country where he has endured previous disappointments. GERMANY DUMP OUT ENGLAND! 🇩🇪 What. A. Story! Martin Schindler and Ricardo Pietreczko produce a spectacular performance to topple England's titans Luke Humphries and Luke Littler! 📺 #WCOD25 | Last 16 — PDC Darts (@OfficialPDC) June 14, 2025 A delighted Schindler, who had insisted in advance that the English duo were 'beatable', told Sky Sports: 'I was right because we believed in ourselves. 'We have been putting in a solid performance, and obviously the double 16s from Ricardo just went in, so we are very happy to go through. 'Today was one step and tomorrow is the other. That's it.' Booed by the home crowd, Littler started nervously and the Germans took the first two legs, but his 123 check-out got England on the board before a 64 finish levelled it up at 2-2. BACK-TO-BACK LEGS FOR ENGLAND! It's not over just yet… Humphries and Littler are battling valiantly here, and they register back-to-back legs to reduce the deficit to 7-4… 📺 #WCOD25 | Last 16 — PDC Darts (@OfficialPDC) June 14, 2025 However, the the teenager missed three darts at a double in the fifth leg to allow Pietreczko to win it with a 106 out-shot and another in the sixth as the Germans restored their advantage, and after Humphries had hit 25 rather than bull going for 122, they went in at the break 5-2 ahead. Pietreczko took out 101 after the resumption before Germany went 7-2 up and although Littler and Humphries took the next two, they eventually succumbed as a return of just four doubles from the 11 chances they created ultimately proved costly. Germany's reward is a quarter-final tie against Australia, who routed Argentina 8-1 with Damon Heta and Simon Whitlock proving too strong for Jesus Salate and Victor Guillin despite missing 21 of their 29 attempts at doubles. Twice-winners Gerwyn Price and Jonny Clayton secured Wales' passage with a resounding 8-2 win over the Philippines. Here's the moment Netherlands wrapped up a stunning whitewash win over Scotland! 🇳🇱 SIXTEEN legs without reply for Danny Noppert and Gian van Veen in this tournament! 🤯 #WCOD25 | Last 16 — PDC Darts (@OfficialPDC) June 14, 2025 The Welsh pair, who claimed the crown in 2020 and 2023, powered their way through to a last eight clash with Hong Kong with the minimum of fuss despite the first three legs going against the darts. However, Scotland's Peter Wright and Gary Anderson found themselves on the wrong end of a demolition job as they went down 8-0 to the Netherlands in just 15 minutes. Danny Noppert and world youth champion Gian Van Veen, who took out 130 to claim the fourth leg on Scotland's throw, were in inspired form, averaging 100.2 and converting eight of the 12 darts they had at doubles to breeze through to a meeting with the Czech Republic. William O'Connor and Keane Barry eased the Republic of Ireland to a showdown with neighbours Northern Ireland after an 8-3 victory over Switzerland in which they were always in control. Wales, Netherlands, Germany and Australia go through as Day Three comes to a close ✅ Some big shocks in Frankfurt! — PDC Darts (@OfficialPDC) June 14, 2025 Northern Ireland were comfortable winners over South Africa as Josh Rock and Daryl Gurney eased them to an 8-2 success.

Nico Rosberg calls out Danica Patrick live on Sky Sports F1 at Canadian GP

The Canadian Grand Prix track sparked debate between Sky Sports F1 colleagues Danica Patrick and Nico Rosberg during the broadcaster's live coverage of the Montreal event Danica Patrick was told she was wrong about the Canadian Grand Prix track by her colleague Nico Rosberg. The German's comment came during the live Sky Sports broadcast from Montreal as former IndyCar and NASCAR driver Patrick spoke about the circuit. The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is a fans' favourite when it comes to all the different circuits visited by Formula 1 over the course of a season. And it is not for the faint-hearted in places, with some notoriously difficult sections including the famous 'Wall of Champions' at the final corner. ‌ Despite that, Patrick claimed that it is "not a super challenging track". She said: "Montreal is a fun track, but it's not the most complicated. As long as you get get the balance right, you get it to change directions, just be able to get on the throttle coming off, you can put it together here." ‌ But that was not a view shared by he Sky Sports colleague Rosberg. And the 2016 F1 champion was quick to make that known as he provided the complete opposite view of a circuit he knows very well from his racing days. Rosberg replied: "I have to disagree ever so slightly there, Danica. Montreal is one of the hardest tracks of the year, because there's so many bumps and at every kerb you have to hit it so perfectly. "It's a real driver's track, which is why Lewis Hamilton has won all his records here and even Max Verstappen has won all the last races, because the driver can really shine here." In response, Patrick admitted that "there is a huge penalty for not being precise and that's hitting the wall." That exchange came after Patrick had made a similar claim a day earlier on the Sky broadcast from Friday's action. While her claim went unchallenged that time, colleague Martin Brundle seemed to briefly double-take at what he had just heard before simply staring into the camera. ‌ Patrick has become a regular pundit on Sky's F1 coverage, appearing several times per season as part of the broadcaster's rotating pool of on-screen talent. But her appearances often come with some criticism as she has become a divisive figure because of her political views. She is a public supporter of Donald Trump, having endorsed his successful run for the US Presidency last year. Patrick was also previously in a relationship with NFL superstar quarterback Aaron Rodgers having dated for more than two years until they split in summer 2020. And last month she claimed during a podcast appearance that Rodgers had been "emotionally abusive". She said: "The nature of the relationship was emotionally abusive, so that wore me down to nothing... He leaves a trail of blood. I don't think I'm saying too much earth-shattering stuff – there's been enough out there."
