Trent Grisham slam in 9th lifts Yankees past Braves

Reuters20-07-2025
July 20 - Trent Grisham's third career grand slam in the ninth inning propelled the visiting New York Yankees to a 12-9 come-from-behind win over the Atlanta Braves on Saturday to square their three-game series.
Grisham hit a slider from Raisel Iglesias (4-6) into the right field seats to help New York take its first lead and end its three-game losing streak. It was Grisham's 17th homer, tying his career best.
Luke Weaver (2-3) pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings and earned the win.
Anthony Volpe sparked the New York offense with a pair of home runs, his 11th and 12th, and a sacrifice fly.
Volpe's first homer was a two-run shot in the fifth off Wander Suero that put New York on the scoreboard after the Braves scored the game's first five runs. The second was a solo homer off Dylan Lee that tied the game 8-8 in the eighth. It was Volpe's first multi-home run game of the season.
The Braves built a 5-0 lead thanks in part to a 438-foot solo homer by Michael Harris II, his seventh of the season and first since June 13, and a three-run homer by Ozzie Albies, his ninth. Albies added a two-run single in the fifth to give Atlanta a 7-2 lead.
New York rallied against the Atlanta bullpen, scoring four times against Enyel De Los Santos in the sixth to pull within 7-6. Jazz Chisholm Jr. drove in the first run with a single and Aaron Judge scored on an error. Volpe followed with a deep sacrifice fly and Chisholm scored on an infield grounder.
Atlanta extended the lead to 8-6 on Matt Olson's RBI single in the sixth, but New York got it back on Cody Bellinger's solo homer, his 17th, in the seventh.
Atlanta's Joey Wentz made his first start of the season and threw four scoreless innings. He allowed two hits and one walk with two strikeouts. Wentz, signed after being released by Minnesota, has not allowed a run in seven innings since joining the Braves.
New York starter Will Warren was knocked out after allowing five runs on five hits and three walks in 3 2/3 innings of work. He struck out five.

Kyle Stowers' blast leads Marlins to unprecedented Yankees sweep

August 3 - All-Star outfielder Kyle Stowers launched a three-run homer as the host Miami Marlins claimed a 7-3 win on Sunday afternoon to sweep the New York Yankees for the first time. Stowers, whose fourth-inning blast pushed the Marlins' lead to 6-1, finished with two homers and eight RBIs in the three-game series. Miami won 13-12 on Friday and 2-0 on Saturday. Edward Cabrera (5-5) pitched six strong innings on Sunday as the Marlins (55-55) climbed to the .500 mark for the first time since being 8-8 on April 15. Cabrera allowed just two hits, one walk and one run while striking out seven. The Marlins are 30-14 since June 13. They have lost just one of their past 12 series, going 10-1-1. New York, which had won three straight games before coming to Miami, was led by former Marlins star Jazz Chisholm Jr., who slugged a two-run homer. The Yankees also got a homer from Trent Grisham, who hit a leadoff shot on the fifth pitch of the game. However, Luis Gil (0-1) couldn't hold the lead as he made his 2025 debut following an injury in March. Gil lasted 3 1/3 innings, allowing five hits, four walks and five runs. Gil walked two consecutive batters in the second inning before rookie Troy Johnston picked up his first major league RBI with a double. Xavier Edwards added an RBI single and Stowers completed the three-run rally with a sacrifice fly. In the fourth, Gil walked Graham Pauley and gave up a single to Edwards to encourage Yankees manager Aaron Boone to bring in reliever Brent Headrick. Three pitches later, it was 6-1 on Stowers' 25th homer of the season. In the seventh, Marlins manager Clayton McCullough brought in lefty reliever Josh Simpson. Giancarlo Stanton dribbled an infield single before lefty-swinging Chisholm slugged his two-run homer to cut New York's deficit to 6-3. Miami escaped further trouble in the seventh after Anthony Volpe's two-out triple as Simpson got Austin Wells on a flyout. In the bottom of the seventh, Otto Lopez walked and scored on rookie Jakob Marsee's 397-foot triple off the glove of Grisham, who had raced back to the warning track in straightaway center. The Marlins struck out 14 Yankees batters, including Lake Bachar's whiff of Volope for the final out of the game. --Field Level Media

Royals score five in 10th to topple Blue Jays

August 3 - Tyler Tolbert keyed a five-run 10th with a two-run single as the visiting Kansas City Royals defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 7-4 on Sunday afternoon. Kyle Isbel started the 10th-inning rally with an RBI double against Seranthony Dominguez (2-4) to help the Royals take the rubber match of the three-game series. Isbel had two hits for the Royals, who started a nine-game road trip with the series win. Ernie Clement and Joey Loperfido had two hits for the Blue Jays. Toronto scored once against Seth Lugo in the second inning. Bo Bichette led off with a walk and Daulton Varsho walked with two out. Clement's infield single to third loaded the bases for Myles Straw, who stroked an RBI single to left. The Royals scored once against Chris Bassitt in the fourth. Vinnie Pasquantino and Maikel Garcia walked with one out. After Bassitt had the grounds crew work on an issue with his landing spot on the mound, he hit Salvador Perez with a pitch to load the bases and Mike Yastrzemski lined a sacrifice fly to left. Clement led off the home fifth with a walk, took second on a sacrifice and scored on Loperfido's two-out single to center. John Schreiber replaced Lugo, who allowed two runs, four hits and four walks with three strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings. Brendon Little took over in the seventh from Bassitt, who allowed one run, one hit and three walks with five strikeouts in six innings. Kansas City forged a 2-2 tie against Louis Varland in the eighth. Bobby Witt Jr. doubled to center with two out and scored on Pasquantino's single to center. Hunter Harvey (1-0) allowed only an infield single in the bottom of the ninth to set up the Royals' third extra-inning win in the last nine days. Dominguez allowed Isbel's RBI double that scored automatic runner Randal Grichuk to lead off the 10th. Jonathan India was hit by a pitch and Witt walked to load the bases. Tolbert hit a two-run single. Catcher Alejandro Kirk, activated from the injured list for the game, threw errantly to third on a pickoff attempt to allow a run to score. Garcia added a sacrifice fly. Nathan Lukes and Addison Barger hit RBI singles against Carlos Estevez in the home 10th. --Field Level Media

Brice Turang goes deep twice as Brewers clobber Nationals

August 3 - Brice Turang homered twice and drove in four runs, and the Milwaukee Brewers routed the Washington Nationals 14-3 to complete a sweep of the three-game series. The Brewers, who boast the best record (67-44) in baseball, scored 38 runs and collected 56 hits in the series. Joey Ortiz had two hits and drove in four runs, and Brandon Lockridge had two hits and three RBIs for Milwaukee, which finished 6-0 against Washington this season. Milwaukee's scheduled starter, rookie Jacob Misiorowski, was placed on the injured list Sunday morning with a left tibia contusion. Logan Henderson was recalled from Triple-A Nashville and pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowing a run on three hits and two walks while striking out four. Aaron Ashby (2-1) pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings and struck out three for the win. Drew Millas had two doubles for Washington. Brad Lord (2-6) took the loss, allowing three runs on six hits over 4 2/3 innings. He struck out six and walked two. As in the first two games, Milwaukee scored in the first inning when consecutive singles by William Contreras, Andrew Vaughn and Christian Yelich made it 1-0. With two outs in the second and a runner on first, Turang homered to right center to make it 3-0. The Nationals broke through in the fifth when Millas doubled and Jacob Young singled off Henderson to cut the Nationals' lead to 3-1. Ashby came on and struck out CJ Abrams and James Wood to end the threat. Blake Perkins walked and pinch hitter Caleb Durbin singled leading off the sixth. Perkins scored on a sacrifice fly by Lockridge and then Durbin stole third and scored on Millas's throwing error on the play to make it 5-1. The Brewers broke it open against Zach Brzykcy in the seventh. With one out, Yelich walked, Isaac Collins singled and Perkins walked to load the bases. Durbin was hit by a pitch, forcing in a run, and Lockridge singled, scoring two runs to make it 8-1. After a wild pitch, Ortiz singled home two more runs. Ryan Loutus came on to face Turang, who homered to right to make it 12-1. Ortiz doubled home two runs in the eighth. Millas smacked a two-run double in the bottom of the ninth. --Field Level Media
