Racing Confidential: Controversy behind Winx, Black Caviar ‘Legend' gong for Australian Racing Hall of Fame
The decision to elevate mighty mares Black Caviar and Winx to 'Legend' status in the Hall of Fame didn't meet with universal approval.
There was some criticism of both champions being given the rare honour at the same time and it also prompted debate why other greats like Tulloch, Kingston Town and Bernborough haven't been given a similar acknowledgment.

The Hall of Fame selection committee (of which this writer is a member) had a robust debate about the issue before it was determined Black Caviar and Winx should be elevated to 'Legend' in the Hall of Fame, and there was no reason why both could not be given the honour at the same time.
Some of the criticism has been that the judges were swayed by a 'recency bias' but alternatively there is also a widespread acceptance that both Black Caviar and Winx richly deserve 'Legend' status.
They join Phar Lap, Carbine and Makybe Diva as the only horses to be given the honour.
This decision has certainly created some controversy but also an unexpected bonus – it has brought more attention and media coverage than usual to the Hall of Fame-Horse of the Year Awards ceremony in Brisbane on August 31.

Joseph hoists flag for midweek Highways
Barbara Joseph, who is an institution in NSW racing, contacted Racing Confidential in support of an item which appeared in this column last week calling for TAB Highways to be introduced to bolster Sydney midweek meetings.
'I'm in favour of midweek Highways,'' Joseph said. 'But they could also be a little different and made for horses with a benchmark rating of around 80.
'The country trainers would definitely support these races like they do with the Highways every Saturday.
'City trainers are coming to win our country Cups more often these days and I understand that so why not give the country trainers more opportunity to race for midweek prizemoney in the city?''
Joseph is a voice of reason in racing and she has earned the respect of her peers from a celebrated training career that spans 50 years and includes nearly 2000 winners including her famous 1989 Doncaster Handicap triumph with Merimbula Bay.

A midweek meeting to remember for form analysts

For a late season, winter race meeting, the Kensington midweeker should prove a very strong form reference.
Each of the seven winners were dominant in their own way, none more so than the brilliant Peter Snowden-trained two-year-old Raging Force, who ran his rivals ragged to win by a big margin in fast time despite being eased down in the last 100m.

Stardeel and Wollzeile also won with authority while Frosty Girl maintained her unbeaten record to finish fast and score convincingly.
Axius was impressive first-up and looks to have a future, Hasty Honey can win again while Getafix carried a big weight and monstered his rivals to win by nearly six lengths.

Kelly Schweida confident El Morzillo can defy her price to deliver him a third Group 1 Tatt's Tiara triumph
Kelly Schweida has made a pair of decisive strikes in the Group 1 Tatt's Tiara and he thinks bookmakers have offered up a tantalising price for filly El Morzillo to land a knockout blow on Saturday. The wily Eagle Farm trainer has won the Tatt's Tiara in 2016 with Miss Cover Girl and in 2007 with Nova Star. He will have another crack at the race on Saturday with three-year-old grey filly El Morzillo, who is not among the betting fancies as a $23 chance to score the last Group 1 of the Australian racing season. El Morzillo, who won a $1m restricted race down the Flemington straight in March, has hit the winter carnival scoreboard once with a win but has been unplaced in three other tries. However, Schweida thinks she has been racing well and points out she finished fourth behind Floozie in the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes with Firestorm finishing third. Chris Waller mare Firestorm is a $4.20 chance in the Tatt's Tiara. 'Floozie was good the other day and Firestorm was good, but I thought my filly's run was fine,' Schweida said. 'Going into the Tatt's Tiara, my filly is big odds whereas Firestorm who finished one ahead of us the other day is $4. 'I know my filly won this carnival when she was up on the speed, but that's not normally her go. 'The plan on Saturday will be to ride her quiet and let her finish off strongly. 'This race has been the idea for her the whole way through.' Meanwhile, Schweida will back-up Miss Joelene from her sixth-placed finish lumping 60kg in last Saturday's Ipswich Cup, which was won by bolter Flash Aah. Miss Joelene will race as a $4 chance in the Listed Tatt's Gold Crown (2100m) with the luxury weight of 56.5kg. Schweida expects Metalart to be a strong contender in the Group 3 Healy Stakes (1200m) after an eye-catching third behind stablemate Vodka Martini in the Listed Lightning Handicap. 'This is a strong race, but he has got a good barrier,' Schweida said. 'I thought his run in the Lightning was good, he got held up twice but he kept trying. 'He has won seven of his 13 starts and he probably should have won nine, he has got a good record. 'Jason Collett will ride, but that wasn't Plan A. 'Michael Rodd was Plan A, but he broke his hand. 'Jason is a very good replacement.' Metalart is a $7.50 chance in the Healy, in a betting market which has Need Some Luck and Hidden Wealth as the leading fancies.

‘Everyone is dealing with something': Jonathon Maron doesn't leave out anything in book Mental As Anyone
When entertainment journalist Jonathon Moran decided to write a book about his experience with mental health, it didn't occur to him to leave anything out. I don't remember when I was introduced to Mr Moran, or J-Mo as everyone calls him, but I knew before I met him that I wanted to be his friend. Not just because I'm a long-term fan of his work, but because in a sea of beige and neutrals, J-Mo will be seen strutting around the News Corp offices in everything from camo to sparkles to track pants. If you don't see him coming, you'll definitely hear him because he has no issues projecting his voice while lovingly calling most people 'babe' usually followed-up by a disarming one-liner. He is also a lovely friend. I can remember once he said something in passing that hurt my feelings. Not only did he apologise, but he also rang me that night to check on me again. J-Mo is incredibly sweet but some of that sweetness stems from a lifetime of not feeling good enough. It was his own mental health journey, which is still very much a journey, that made him want to write Mental as Anyone. It is part memoir and part mental health toolkit, which he wrote alongside psychologist Dr Jodie Lowinger. The seasoned entertainment journalist puts it all out on the table, from the sexual abuse he experienced to his battle with depression or the fact he estimates he has slept with over 1000 men. It is unflinchingly honest, but speaking to J-Mo said that the process was ultimately liberating. 'Obviously, the sexual abuse was really difficult to reflect on because it forced me to relive it in ways I've kind of avoided despite the fact I've had lots of therapy. The only times I've relieved that is within nightmares,' he told me. 'It was so vivid in my mind.' That wasn't a deterrent though because J-Mo was deadset on being honest and the only stuff that he didn't put in his book - was trauma that involved other people. When telling his own, he realised he didn't want to incidentally out anyone else's issues. 'There were a couple of things I didn't include to protect their feelings,' he said. Besides that, he was happy to air it all. 'People think I'm this bubbly and happy life of the party, but anyone that really knows me knows I have a dark underbelly … and a belly,' he joked. 'If you really know me …. you know.' The journalist said that 'everyone is dealing with something' and this book is all about not hiding from it and embracing it. He said he knows some of his honesty goes against the 'harden up blokey' Australian culture, but that is something he's proud of. 'I refuse to play that game and I refuse for that to dictate what I will or won't do. The mental health conversation has really stalled at are you okay? We need to take it further,' he said. There are also a lot of fun moments in the book, such as conversations about him meeting Madonna, juicy celebrity encounters, and the times he has even slept with big celebs. 'Mate, I've slept with many people; some of them were famous, and some of them weren't. It didn't really matter! It wasn't about them; it was about me being desperate to show that I had value,' he said. J-Mo may not want to linger on it, but he will admit that there was more than just one. 'A handful only a handful. Let's say five,' he said. Famous sexual encounters aside, J-Mo has now found real happiness with his long-term partner Alex. 'Sex for me until I met my partner was just an exchange. It wasn't something valued,' he said. 'The minute I met my partner Alex I knew he was the one.' The only clincher was that it took Alex a moment to catch-up. 'It him a lot longer than it took me. I knew it immediately because it was a slow burn and we weren't rushing anything,' he said. J-Mo said that despite knowing immediately that Alex was 'the one,' that doesn't mean relationships are easy, and that Alex makes him feel great all the time. 'Sometimes (he makes me feel) like s**t when he hasn't done the dishes but he makes me feel complete,' he said. Ultimately, the whole point of the book, much like J-Mo's comments about his relationship with Alex, is to point out that nothing is perfect. Mental As Anyone doesn't just show how far he has come in his mental health journey but rather how far he still has to go. 'I feel I'm very much a working progress. The book isn't saying I'm all aces, it is saying we're all works in progress,' J-Mo said.

‘Rip-off': Meghan Markle's pricey tea sparks outrage over cheap supplier
Meghan Markle has been branded 'Meghan Mark-up' after it emerged she is selling her herbal tea for three times the price. Meg's tea costing AU$17 for a dozen bags sold out within minutes of being restocked on her As Ever website last week. It can now be revealed that Meghan sourced her ingredients from American firm The Republic of Tea. But the company sells its comparable tea for between AU$17 and AU$21 for 36 tea bags – meaning Meg's offerings will set you back three times as much. Sources close to Meghan confirm Republic of Tea is her supplier but insist her blend is 'different' to what they offer. Royal expert Margaret Holder said: 'Customers are paying a considerable increase for Meghan's label. 'She is taking advantage of celebrity branding. But it's a case of Meghan Mark-up not Meghan Markle.' The Duchess restocked her Herbal Hibiscus Tea and Herbal Lemon Tea last Friday for AU$17 for 12 tea bags. They sold out within hours along with her AU$23 flower sprinkles and AU$43 limited edition orange blossom honey. But internet sleuths scoured the page source of the As Ever website tea and found the brand was listed as The Republic of Tea. Since it emerged online and on social media the brand has been changed to 'As Ever store'. The Republic of Tea sells a vast range of teas included one branded from Netflix show Bridgerton and ITV series Downton Abbey. Its headquarters are in California but factory is 2,000 miles away in Nashville, Illinois. As Ever has also launched its first alcoholic beverage with a 2023 Rose. The booze is set to be available from July 1 which has raised eyebrows as would have been Princess Diana's 64th birthday. Ex-palace spokesman Dickie Arbiter, speaking on The Sun's show Royal Exclusive, said: 'I don't think we should be surprised that anything she does and as far as bringing out a wine, it's going to sell for something like £20 or 28 US dollars (AU$43). It's a lot of money.' 'And if you're going to go into that sort of business, you've got to produce a lot of wine to make money. If her jam is anything to go by, it's going to be sold out in about ten minutes. 'How many bottles is she producing? Who's producing it? She's not a wine expert. So, you know why go into something that you probably know nothing about?' A spokesman for Harry and Meghan declined to comment. This comes as eagle-eyed royal fans have spotted a surprising blunder in Meghan latest Instagram post – despite the Duchess being praised for her 'attention to detail'. The photo, posted on the official Instagram page of her lifestyle brand appears to be a heartfelt thankyou to followers. But the image, believed to be taken in Meghan's kitchen in Montecito, California, seems to have accidentally revealed more than intended. At first glance, the post looks polished and charming. A handwritten note sits neatly in the centre of the picture on a marble work top, reading: 'You're beautiful. Full stop.' The note is surrounded by sprigs of thyme, two eggs, a rolling pin and scattered flour, with Meghan's hand peeking into the bottom left corner of the image. However, fans quickly noticed something that seemed out of place – a small black mouse cursor just above Meghan's hand on the left edge of the picture. The digital slip suggests the image may have been taken as a screen grab, rather than a fresh photograph. And, royal experts have claimed the Duchess is 'social mountaineering' herself to the top but has a lack of 'authenticity.' Their comments came off the back of the mum-of-two being interviewed by 'self-made' Emma Grede, co-founder of Skims with Kim Kardashian and podcast host for Aspire. The two women sat down for a chat, covering family life for Meghan and Prince Harry as well as her ventures after leaving the royal family. Speaking on The Sun's Royal Exclusive show, news commentator Samara Gill said: 'It was like the lack of authenticity in that interview was really palpable. 'Emma Greed, who was the interviewer, she's such a self-made East Londoner who actually really fought for what she has. 'She's really the brains behind a lot of big brands, the Kardashians etc, which is a little bit tawdry, but you know she really is someone who worked her way to be there. 'Meghan on the other hand really socially mountaineered her way to the top. 'So it's very difficult to take this authentic side that Emma was giving and this complete lack of authenticity that Meghan was showing in the interview, it was very hard to watch.' Royal author and broadcaster Hugo Vickers agreed, saying: 'The thing is, would nobody ever listen to Meghan Markle if it wasn't the fact she'd married Prince Harry?
