UP nod for second Greater Noida to Faridabad link across Yamuna

Noida: UP govt has approved a second link road between Greater Noida and Faridabad via Manjhawali bridge over the Yamuna to cut travel time between the two cities to just 30 minutes. With the 56-km Faridabad-Noida-Ghaziabad (FNG) Expressway still under construction—only 50% of the 23km expressway that will pass through Noida is currently ready—commuters currently take nearly two hours to travel through congested Delhi and Noida areas to reach Faridabad. The new link road, a four-lane corridor off Yamuna Expressway and Eastern Peripheral Expressway, is expected to serve as a crucial link for passengers travelling from Haryana, once flight operations begin from the Noida airport. It is also expected to decongest the Kalindi Kunj flyover and Noida Expressway, a crucial link between Haryana, Delhi and Noida. Under the project, UP will construct a 1.7-km stretch from Atta Gujran up to the Haryana border, where the road will connect with an existing road, the Manjhawali bridge and Jasana in Faridabad. A 3km stretch will also be widened under the project. Though the project was proposed in 2014, it has faced several delays. Construction of the 630-metre Manjhawali bridge itself took over four years to start and missed six deadlines before finally opening in Dec 2022. Despite being operational, the bridge remained underutilised due to the absence of a connecting road on the UP side, delayed by funding and land acquisition hurdles. Haryana side of the approach road is ready. Officials said around seven hectares of land need to be acquired for the project. So far, land registry agreements have been signed with half of the 110 affected farmers. The district administration has already received Rs 25 crore to compensate the affected farmers, and additional funds have been proposed to fast-track the acquisition process. Meanwhile, construction of the long-awaited Faridabad-Noida-Ghaziabad (FNG) Expressway remains incomplete. Parts of the expressway that remain to be constructed include a 650m elevated road in Chhijarsi village and a one-lane stretch near Sorkha village that is held up due to a legal dispute over an old structure at the site. Another stretch passing over the Hindon is awaiting clearance from the irrigation department. The expressway is likely to be ready by 2027.

‘Sugar prodn dips 23% in 7 yrs despite rise in cane acreage'

Lucknow: UP's sugarcane sector has witnessed an intriguing trend with sugar production by mills falling by almost 23% between 2017-18 and 2024-25, despite a substantial increase in cane acreage and productivity during the period. Industry sources attribute the dip to diversion of cane for Khandsari, low recovery and adverse weather conditions. Data released by the cane development department shows that the area under cane cultivation increased by almost 28% — from 22.99 lakh hectares in 2017-18 to 29.51 lakh hectares in 2024-25. Likewise, the productivity also increased from 79.19 tonnes per hectare to 83 tonnes per hectare, signifying a rise of around 5%. Even cane production went up from 1820.75 lakh tonnes (LT) to 2456.35 LT during the same period. The number of mills crushing cane also rose from 119 to 122, one of the highest in recent times. However, the sugar production dropped from 120.5 lakh tonnes in 2017-18 to 92.45 lakh tonnes in 2024-25, a fall of around 23%. In 2023-24, sugar production in the state was pegged at around 104.13 lakh tonnes. The cane crushing season in UP ended in June earlier this year. Yet, UP happens to be the biggest producer of sugar in the country, surpassing Maharashtra. The western state was the leading producer of sugar last year when it produced around 110 lakh metric tonnes of sugar. This, however, plunged below 90 LMT in 2024-25. Nationally, the total sugar production is estimated to be around 330 lakh tonnes. The fall in sugar production is largely attributed to the diversion of sugar from cane mills to Khandsari, a traditional, unrefined Indian sugar made from sugarcane juice. It's a natural sweetener that retains more nutrients and molasses than refined white sugar. According to an estimate, UP has around 250 Khandsari units, essentially established in parts of west and central UP. Industry sources said that cane growers diverted their produce to Khandsari units for quicker compensation compared to the one paid by the mills. The shift gained pertinence against the backdrop of the state govt keeping the State Advisor Price (SAP) for sugar at Rs 370 per quintal (for early variety) and Rs 360 per quintal for general variety. Another key reason behind the downturn in sugar production is adverse weather conditions — drought and excess rainfall — besides a drop in the quality of cane. Sources said that the cane recovery reduced from around 10.5% in 2017-18 to a little over 9.5% in current times.

Transport dept helpline may change

Lucknow: The transport department has requested the central govt to simplify the existing helpline number (18001800151) to an easy-to-remember three-digit number, '151', for public convenience. The initiative is one among the many that the department undertook this year, between Jan and July, to make its services easier for people, and also for improving road safety, enforcement mechanisms, e-governance, revenue enhancement, and technological innovations. As a result, people need not visit transport offices now as 45 transport services, including license, permit, and RC, can be availed through 1.5 lakh Common Service Centres (CSCs) across the state. The department is making strong security arrangements in collaboration with NIC to prevent online fraud during the issuance of faceless learning licenses. "Technical measures will ensure system safety and prevent the issuance of fraudulent licenses," said transport commissioner, UP, Brajesh Narain Singh. Instead of traditional paper-based vehicle registration certificates (RC), the department will make smart card-based RCs available across the state soon, thus enhancing the security, durability, and portability of RCs.
