TAWAU: The Federal Ministry of Finance has approved an allocation of RM1 million to the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) for the implementation of the Kampung Angkat Madani initiative this year. The approval was welcomed by Kampung Inderasabah residents, the only settlement in the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (Esszone) selected for the programme. Esscom Chief Executive Officer Datuk Dr Jamaluddin Mohd Ali said the primary focus is on improving infrastructure and the wellbeing of the community. 'Among the initiatives already identified are installing lighting in dimly lit roads, upgrading the jetty and enhancing security measures in Inderasabah,' he said. He said this after co-chairing the Mesyuarat Penyelarasan Program Kampung Angkat Madani Esscom with Apas Assemblyman Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan at the Tawau Municipal Council, here, Tuesday. Jamaluddin said six villages in Sabah were selected as Kampung Angkat Madani, but Inderasabah is the only one chosen in the Esszone as it meets the specified criteria. 'If this programme proves successful in Inderasabah, we may expand a similar model to other areas in Esszone, such as Kudat, Sandakan, Beluran, or Semporna,' he added. When asked about the selection criteria for Inderasabah, he said the village is exposed to cross-border criminal activities such as fuel smuggling and sea robberies. The selection also considered the village's geographical proximity to Indonesian and the Philippine waters, as well as the strong unity among its residents. 'Additionally, an extra allocation of RM200,000 has been set aside for programmes under the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector. 'We have also selected SK Lihak-Lihak in Semporna as a Sekolah Angkat Madani with an allocation of RM100,000 following discussions with the State Education Department,' he said. On security matters, Deputy Tawau District Police Chief Supt Champin Piuh said the situation in Inderasabah is under control, with only three isolated crime cases recorded. 'In terms of security, we have a General Operations Force checkpoint in Inderasabah, along with maritime surveillance by the marine police,' he said. Meanwhile, Nizam, who is also Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, expressed gratitude that the village under his constituency was chosen for the programme. 'I am confident this programme will bring significant impact and add value, particularly in social activities related to improving the residents' economy and border security,' he said. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? I was blacklisted from Sabah last week, now banned from leaving Malaysia: Fahmi Reza

Published on: Saturday, June 07, 2025 Published on: Sat, Jun 07, 2025 By: Malay Mail Text Size: Fahmi shared on social media that he arrived at KLIA2 for a short two-day trip to a concert in Singapore. - Pic via Fahmi Reza | Facebook Graphic artist and political activist Fahmi Reza said he was stopped from boarding a flight to Singapore today after being informed he was blacklisted from travelling overseas — the second such travel restriction imposed on him in just over two weeks. In a statement posted on his social media, Fahmi recounted arriving at KLIA2 at around 7.30am to catch a 9.35am flight for a short two-day trip to attend a concert featuring South Korean band Slant and Singaporean act Sial. Advertisement But at the international departure counter, Immigration officers told him he had been flagged and needed to wait at their office. 'I was asked to wait while they checked with TCO (Travel Control Office/Order). Then they took my passport and IC for photocopying. They also wanted printed copies of my boarding pass and e-ticket, even though I had them on my phone,' he wrote, adding that with only 10 minutes left before boarding, an airport staff member helped him get the documents printed at a hotel nearby. When he returned to Immigration with the documents, Fahmi said an officer told him, 'Bukit Aman has not given clearance for you to leave the country.' He said no explanation was provided and he was escorted out of the departure area. Advertisement Fahmi is well known for his satirical illustrations that often critique political leaders and institutions. He believes the ban is linked to his artwork criticising the recent appointment of former Sabah chief minister Tun Musa Aman as the state's new Yang di-Pertua Negeri. Just weeks earlier, on May 29, the Sabah Immigration Department had denied Fahmi entry into the state under Section 65(1)(a) of the Immigration Act 1959/63. He said he was flown back to Kuala Lumpur the same day without further explanation. That incident followed his earlier arrest by Sabah police in February this year over another satirical post. Authorities had opened investigations under the Sedition Act for allegedly insulting the royal institution. 'Last week I was blacklisted from entering Sabah. This week, I'm blacklisted from leaving the country,' he wrote. 'My only 'offence' was creating critical artwork.' * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? MCMC says no personal data involved in phone record request

Published on: Saturday, June 07, 2025 Published on: Sat, Jun 07, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: For illustrative purposes only. - Getty Images PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission has defended its directive requiring phone companies to hand over data on all mobile phone calls made from January to March. The commission said no personal information would be accessed, processed, or disclosed by the commission. It said that the data requested was anonymised and contained no information that can be used to identify any person. Advertisement The telecommunications companies are given the option to either process the data within their own secure environment and submit the required anonymised and aggregated output to the MCMC; or for those without processing capabilities, submit the anonymised data to the commission for processing. 'In both cases, no individual subscriber can be identified through the data collected,' MCMC said in a statement this evening. The statement came hours after the South China Morning Post , quoting industry sources, said that Putrajaya had ordered mobile phone companies to hand over detailed records of phone calls and internet usage as it broadens controls over online activity. The Post's sources said MCMC had sent a letter to telcos calling up detailed call and internet logs for the first three months of this year, as part of the government's mobile phone data project. The data collected would be used strictly for generating official statistics to support 'evidence-based policymaking'. Advertisement It sought such statistics such as the number of active mobile broadband subscriptions and penetration rates by state, district, mukim, local authority and parliamentary and state constituencies. The data was also used for tourism-related purposes, such as generating indicators on visitor numbers and domestic travel trends, MCMC said. 'The use of mobile phone data as a new source of national statistics is a strategic direction set by the government to strengthen the quality and timeliness of statistical outputs for policy and planning purposes,' it added. - FMT * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Russian attack on Ukraine's Kharkiv kills three, wounds 22, mayor says

Firefighters work at the site of a building hit by a Russian drone strike, amid Russia's attack on Ukraine, in Kharkiv, Ukraine June 7, 2025. REUTERS/Sofiia Gatilova KYIV (Reuters) -Russia attacked the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv at night with drones, missiles and guided bombs, killing at least three people and injuring 22, including a one-and-a-half-month-old baby, the city mayor, Ihor Terekhov, said on Saturday. One of Ukraine's largest cities, Kharkiv is located just a few dozen kilometres from the Russian border and has been under constant Russian shelling during more than three years of war. "Kharkiv is currently experiencing the most powerful attack since the start of the full-scale war," Terekhov said on the Telegram messenger early on Saturday. Dozens of explosions were heard in the city through the night and Russian troops were striking simultaneously with missiles, drones and guided aerial bombs, he said. Multi-storey and private residential buildings, educational and infrastructure facilities were attacked, Terekhov noted. Photos by local authorities and Reuters showed burnt and partially destroyed houses and vehicles, and of rescuers carrying those injured to safety and removing debris. Kharkiv governor Oleh Syniehubov said that one of the city's civilian industrial facilities was attacked by 40 drones, one missile and four bombs, causing a fire, adding there may still be people under the rubble. The Ukrainian military said Russia launched 206 drones, 2 ballistic and 7 other missiles against Ukraine overnight. It said its air defence units shot down 87 drones while another 80 drones were lost - in reference to the Ukrainian military using electronic warfare to redirect them - or they were drone simulators that did not carry warheads. Ten locations were hit, the military said. (Reporting by Pavel PolityukEditing by Bernadette Baum)
