Browns sign rookie wide receiver Isaiah Bond after sexual assault case is dropped

Undrafted rookie wide receiver Isaiah Bond signed with the Cleveland Browns on Monday, less than a week after a sexual assault case against him was dropped.
Bond ran a 4.39 in the 40-yard dash at the NFL scouting combine — the ninth-fastest time among wide receivers — and was projected to be drafted in the middle rounds before he was accused of sexual assault and surrendered on April 10 in Frisco, Texas.
A Collins County, Texas, grand jury determined Thursday that there was not enough evidence to indict Bond and dismissed the case.
The Browns hosted Bond as one of their 30 predraft visits. Cleveland offensive coordinator Tommy Rees coached at Alabama the two seasons Bond was there, which also weighed into the decision.
Cleveland general manager Andrew Berry said in a statement that the organization spent the past four months doing 'extensive research that includes but is not limited to hearing from both sides of the case and receiving the results of an independently administered polygraph test.
'Before the allegations, we also spent a great deal of time with Isaiah during the draft process on campus, at the Combine and at our facilities. His time at Alabama with Tommy Rees also weighed heavily on our assessment of his ability to operate successfully in a professional environment if brought into our organization. It is these touchpoints and more that gave us the necessary insights to make this decision.'
Bond spent last season at Texas. He appeared in 41 games in college and had 99 receptions for 1,428 yards and 10 touchdowns. To make room for Bond, Cleveland waived long snapper Brent Matiscik.
Unsigned second-round pick Quinshon Judkins also had a domestic violence case against him dropped Thursday in Florida, but there was no word on when the running back might possibly be signed.
The Browns conclude the preseason on Saturday against the Los Angeles Rams. Even though there are only a couple of weeks until the Sept. 7 opener against Cincinnati, coach Kevin Stefanski said Sunday he thinks both Bond and Judkins — or any player added to the roster this week — can make up for lost time.
'That happens during the season, can happen in training camp where you got, you have to get players up to speed quickly,' Stefanski said. 'That happens sometimes you get a guy on a Wednesday and they have to play on a Sunday. So that's part of our job as coaches, is to get them ready to roll.'

Skylar Diggins scores 24, Nneka Ogwumike adds 21 to help Storm beat Sky 94-88

CHICAGO (AP) — Skylar Diggins scored 24 points, Nneka Ogwumike added 21 points and the Chicago Sky beat the Seattle Storm 94-88 on Tuesday night. Chicago (8-26) has lost five games in a row and 13 of its last 14. Dominique Malonga had 15 points, seven rebounds and a career-high three blocks for Seattle (18-18). The 19-year-old rookie hit 7 of 13 from the field and has made 106 total field goals to become the first player in WNBA history with 100 field goals before the age of 20. Brittney Sykes scored 12 points and Ezi Magbegor had 11 points, eight rebounds and four blocks for the Storm. Angel Reese, who returned from a seven-game absence due to a back injury, and Ariel Atkins scored 19 points apiece for Chicago and Kia Nurse added 13. Kamilla Cardoso had 10 points, six rebounds, six assists and three blocks and Elizabeth Williams added 10 points and nine rebounds. Malonga made back-to-back baskets early in the second quarter to make it 28-25 and give the Storm the lead for good. Ogwumike hit a 3-pointer with 7:13 left in the game that stretched the lead to 19 points — Seattle's biggest of the game. Diggins had six assists and moved past Becky Hammon (1,708) into sole possession of seventh in WNBA history with 1,714 career assists. Ogwumike had two steals to give her 658 career steals, fifth most in league history, one more than Sheryl Swoopes. The Storm play the second of five road games Friday at Dallas. Chicago plays at New York on Thursday. ___ AP WNBA:

Sky star Angel Reese returns from back injury, drops 19 points in loss to Storm

Angel Reese finally made her return to the court on Tuesday night. It just wasn't enough to lead the Chicago Sky to a win. Reese dropped a team-high 19 points and had seven rebounds in their 94-88 loss to the Seattle Storm at Wintrust Arena on Tuesday. She shot 9 of 13 from the field, too. It marked her first game back in several weeks while dealing with a back injury. Reese was on a minutes restriction and played in just 26 despite being in the starting lineup. 'I want to hoop,' she said before the game, via the Chicago Sun Times. 'I'm just happy to be out here to play the game I love.' [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Both Reese and the Sky didn't elaborate much on her injury or recovery over the seven games she missed. Reese said before the game that she'd address it at the end of the year. She missed two road trips and one home game recovering. 'Put all the bulls**t to the side, I wanna hoop," she said. Reese entered the night averaging 14.2 points and 12.6 rebounds per game this season. She hadn't played since the team's loss to the Washington Mystics on July 29. She had 22 points and 13 rebounds in that contest. The Storm led nearly the entire way on Tuesday night, and surged ahead just before halftime while limiting Chicago to just 14 points as a group. Though they scored only six points as a group in the second half of the third period, the Storm still carried a 16-point lead into the fourth quarter. That was just enough for them to fend off the Sky's late surge and escape with the six-point win. Ariel Atkins added 19 points, five assists and five rebounds to go with Reese's 19 points in the loss for Chicago. Kamilla Cardoso finished with 10 points, and Elizabeth Williams finished with 10 points and nine rebounds off the bench. The Sky went just 8-of-16 as a group from behind the 3-point line, too, and put up 38 points in the final quarter to get within striking distance. The Sky won just a single game without Reese and hold one of the worst records in the league at 8-26 with their latest loss, which is better than only the Connecticut Sun. They've been all-but eliminated from postseason contention, too. Skylar Diggins led the Storm with 24 points and six assists in the win. Nneka Ogwumike added 21 points and six rebounds, and Dominique Malonga put up 15 points off the bench. The Storm are also in the midst of a rough stretch. They entered the night having lost lost seven of their last eight. The win brought them back to 18-18 on the season, however, which has them in eighth in the league standings. Though Reese's second season in the league isn't much better from a team perspective, she's at least in a position to finish out the year on the court. That has to count for something.

Pasquantino and Witt back Lugo's stellar start, powering Royals to 5-2 win over Rangers

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Vinnie Pasquantino homered in the first inning and then scored the go-ahead run in the seventh when Jonathan India was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, helping the Kansas City Royals to a 5-2 win over the Texas Rangers on Tuesday night. Bobby Witt Jr. added a two-run shot in the eighth for his 100th career homer, and Mike Yastrzemski went deep for the Royals, who have won five straight and improved to 7-1 on their season-high 10-game homestand. Rangers reliever Hoby Milner (1-3) allowed three consecutive hits to start the seventh, including Pasquantino's double. Cole Winn then entered the game and hit India with his first pitch, giving Kansas City its first lead of the game. Angel Zerpa (4-1) got five outs for the Royals before John Schreiber took care of the ninth for his first save. Royals starter Seth Lugo and Rangers counterpart Merrill Kelly had matched each other pitch-for-pitch for most of the night. Lugo surrendered a homer to Corey Seager with two outs in the first, then allowed one more hit before Joc Pederson's homer in the fourth. Those were the only three hits that Lugo allowed, and he walked two while striking out five. Kelly gave up the homer to Pasquantino, which just scraped over the right-field wall, with two outs in the first. He did not allow another hit until Yastrzemski's shot into the right-field bullpen with two outs in the sixth. Those were the only two hits Kelly allowed over six innings. He struck out three without a walk. Key moment Jonah Heim led off the eighth for Texas with a single, but Zerpa got pinch-hitter Cody Freeman to ground into a double play. Key stat Kansas City is 5-0 against the Rangers this season. Up next The Rangers have not announced their starter for Wednesday after disclosing pregame that RHP Jacob deGrom would skip a turn due to shoulder fatigue. LHP Noah Cameron (7-5, 2.47 ERA) is due on the mound for Kansas City. ___ AP MLB: Dave Skretta, The Associated Press
