Air India Dreamliner flight from Delhi to Milan cancelled before departure due to maintenance issue

NEW DELHI: An Air India Dreamliner flight from New Delhi to Milan with 150-plus passengers was cancelled on Tuesday before departure as a maintenance issue was detected at the last minute.
The flight AI 137, a Boeing 787-8 aircraft was supposed to take off at 1.50 pm from Terminal 3 of Indira Gandhi International Airport here.
In a statement, the airline said flight AI137 scheduled to operate from Delhi to Milan on 5 August has been cancelled due to a maintenance task identified prior to departure which required additional time for rectification. Our ground colleagues in Delhi are making every possible effort to minimise the inconvenience caused to the passengers due to this unforeseen disruption. "
Arrangements are being made to fly the passengers to Milan at the earliest, the statement added.
"Hotel accommodation is being provided, and full refunds on cancellation, or complimentary rescheduling is also being offered to passengers based on their preference," it said.
A series of flights of the Air India group have been experiencing huge delays or aborted take-offs due to technical reasons.

Wilson, a veteran of Singapore Airlines, which holds a 25% stake in Air India alongside majority owner Tata Group , wrote, "I acknowledge there have been some operational challenges... Rest assured, we take this seriously." Wilson outlined a raft of remedial step: detailed inspections of Boeing 787-8 and 787-9 fleet; voluntary flight cuts to allow deeper maintenance checks; strengthened internal systems; continued adherence to regular safety protocols and a comprehensive safety management system.

Pune: Clogged toilets delayed Air India's Delhi-Pune flight by almost five hours on Tuesday afternoon, compelling over 150 passengers to spend almost two hours sitting in the aircraft before deboarding and getting into another plane after going through the formalities, including security check, all over again. The flight (AI-2982) was scheduled to take off from Delhi at 1.05pm and land in Pune at 3.20pm. The substitute plane finally flew at 5.40pm and landed in Pune around 8pm. An Air India spokesperson told TOI, "Flight AI2982, operating from Delhi to Pune, was delayed because of a maintenance task identified prior to departure. It required additional time for rectification. Our ground colleagues in Delhi airport extended support to the passengers to minimise the inconvenience caused because of this unforeseen delay. Arrangements were made to fly the passengers to their destination at the earliest. "Around 1.15pm, the captain of the flight announced that there was a technical problem in the toilets. "Some passengers started questioning the crew when there was no update even after 2pm. The cabin crew just said that the 'work was on'. An announcement was made at 2.20pm that the problem in the toilets persisted and we would be deboarded," Gupta said. He said all the passengers were then taken back to the terminal building. "The airline's staffers said another aircraft would be arranged for us and leave for Pune at 4.40pm. We had to go through the processes, including the security check, all over again. When all passengers came near the boarding gate, the airline's ground staffers announced the start of boarding. After we queued up, we were told that there would be some delay again," Gupta said. The airline's employees told passengers that since the flight had come from Doha, the catering items had to be brought out of the aircraft and fresh items had to be loaded. "We requested the cabin crew that since refreshments had been served because of the delay, they should skip the catering. But the request was turned down," Gupta said.

Air India is set to fully resume its International operations by 1 October 2025, according to a recent statement from the company's CEO and MD, Campbell Wilson. The announcement comes after the Tata-owned airline initiated a 'safety pause' in the wake of the AI171 crash in June, which killed all but one out of the 242 passengers on board, causing a temporary reduction in flight schedule. In an email addressed to Maharaja Club members, Wilson detailed the measures the airline has taken to reinforce its safety protocols. He confirmed that a full resumption of the operations is targeted for 1 October of this year. 'We have begun a phased restoration of international operations from August 1, 2025, with full resumption targeted for October 1, 2025,' he said in a statement, adding that 'this measured approach ensures we complete every verification thoroughly and resume service with complete confidence.' Acknowledging some operational challenges over the last few weeks, Air India CEO Campbell Wilson said the airline is committed to strengthening its internal processes to minimise the inconvenience that such circumstances cause to passengers. On 18 June, Air India said that it would reduce its international services on widebody aircraft by 15 per cent for a few weeks as part of a broader effort to stabilise operations and prioritise safety after the fatal Ahmedabad crash on 12 June 2025, Mint reported earlier. The crash happened after a Boeing 787 Dreamliner of Air India that was headed for London from Ahmedabad, crashed within seconds of lift-off and fell on a medical college hostel. 'This decision has been taken to ensure stability of our operations, improve efficiency, and minimise inconvenience to passengers,' the airline said in a statement on 18 June 2025. Passengers affected by the reduced flight schedule were offered alternative travel options, including rebooking at no additional cost or a full refund.
