Prize money doubled but pro clubs crowd A1 Semi-Pro League

KUALA LUMPUR: The A1 Semi-Pro League is set for a revamp next season, with prize money doubled from RM100,000 to RM200,000, but eyebrows are being raised over the influx of full-fledged professional teams.
Amateur Football League (AFL) chairman Datuk Yusoff Mahadi said the financial boost is aimed at lifting the standard and intensity of the competition.
"We've increased the prize money to RM200,000 for the new season. It's a 100 per cent jump. While it may not sound like much, it's a move to inject more excitement and competitiveness," said Yusoff, who is also FA of Malaysia (FAM) deputy president.
However, the make-up of the 16 confirmed teams has triggered concerns, with several professional outfits and feeder squads included, raising questions about the league's semi-pro status.
Among the teams are top-tier reserve sides JDT II and Selangor II, as well as Immigration II, Kelantan WTS, Armed Forces, Malaysian University, Manjung City, Bunga Raya, Perlis GSA, UM-Damansara United, Machan, and South Korean amateur outfit FC Seoul Phoenix.
Also entering are former Super League sides Kedah Darul Aman and Perak, both of whom failed to obtain national licences.
Their inclusion brings top-flight experience but adds to the growing imbalance.
Under AFL rules, teams must have at least 10 contracted players to qualify as semi-pro.
But Yusoff admitted many clubs are fielding fully professional squads.
"Although the minimum is 10 contracted players, several teams have gone full professional. It's almost a pro league now, just under a semi-pro label," he said.
The shift has led to concerns that the league — meant as a bridge between amateur and professional levels — is being skewed in favour of clubs with superior infrastructure, threatening its development-focused purpose.

Emerging Markets - Asian currencies steady with US data, China tariff deadline in focus

MANILA (Reuters): Asian currencies held largely steady against a softer dollar on Monday, as investors refrained from taking big bets ahead of the USJuly inflation report and expiry of a US tariff deadline on China. The Philippine peso, Taiwan dollar and South Korean won slipped between 0.1% and 0.3%, while most other currencies were little changed. An MSCI index of global emerging market currencies was largely flat, while the dollar index dropped 0.2% following a 0.4% decline last week. Market players braced for U.S. consumer price data, due on Tuesday, for clues on the Federal Reserve's rate-cut path, with a hotter-than-expected report likely to jolt markets by tempering hopes of near-term easing. U.S. President Donald Trump's August 12 deadline for a U.S.-China deal also loomed over markets, with chip policy at the centre of the standoff. Expectations are growing for yet another extension. U.S. imports from Southeast Asia's biggest economies now carry tariffs of about 19%, well below the levels initially threatened. Last week, the Trump administration slapped tariffs of 10% to 50% on dozens of countries and tacked on 40% duties for products found to be illegally rerouted to conceal their origin. "We expect emerging Asian currencies will benefit from U.S. dollar softness in the second half of year. In particular, domestically driven economies with relatively higher yields on offer could be better positioned to gain from dollar weakness," said Lloyd Chan, FX strategist at MUFG. Elsewhere, changes at the helm of key U.S. monetary policy bodies also drew attention. While Trump's Fed governor pick, Stephen Miran, may not be in place to weigh in on a September cut, the race for a new chair has widened to about 10 contenders. Stock markets advanced, with Taiwan up 0.5%, while Indonesia and Malaysia climbed 0.5% and 0.8%, respectively. The Philippine central bank signalled it may deliver the first of two rate cuts planned for this year at its August 28 meeting, with inflation staying subdued. Manila shares dropped 1.3%. Thailand's stock markets were closed for a public holiday. The Bank of Thailand's policy rate decision is due later this week, with analysts at Nomura expecting the central bank to leave its policy rate unchanged. "We expect the BoT to sound dovish, flagging the risks of an economic slowdown in H2 and still-high uncertainty around the tariffs, among other factors," they said. - Reuters

ARK Resources proposes private placement to raise RM1.9m

ARK Resources Holdings Bhd has proposed a private placement of up to 9.05 million new shares, representing not more than 10% of its issued share capital, to independent investors at a price to be determined later. Based on an indicative issue price of 21 sen per share, an 8.7% discount to its five-day volume-weighted average price of 23 sen, the exercise is expected to raise gross proceeds of about RM1.9 million. The construction and property development company plans to allocate RM1.21 million of the proceeds to set up a new 7,000 sq ft corporate office in Bayan Lepas, Penang, which will also serve as a sales and marketing gallery for a planned high-rise residential project in the area. Another RM595,000 will be used for working capital, mainly to hire new staff for the office, while RM100,000 will cover placement expenses. M&A Securities Sdn Bhd has been appointed as the principal adviser and placement agent for the exercise, which is expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2025. The group said the placement will allow it to raise funds quickly without incurring interest expenses and strengthen its capital base. — TMR
