Jordan seeks to expand trade with Syria, revive regional transit routes — minister

Zawya19 hours ago
AMMAN — Around 200 and 250 Jordanian trucks cross daily into Syria carrying locally made products, along with additional transit shipments, reflecting growing trade activity between the two neighbours, Minister of Industry, Trade and Supply Yarub Qudah said on Monday.
Speaking at the Second Conference on Industry, Investment and the Reconstruction of Syria, Qudah said the increase in exports to Syria has also boosted activity at Aqaba Port, which has recorded a 30 per cent rise in container traffic, Al Mamlaka TV reported.
He noted that talks are underway to revive regional transit trade, including discussions between Syria and Turkey on reopening the Bab Al Hawa crossing, which would allow exports to reach European and international markets through transit routes.
Qudah urged the Jordanian private sector to seize economic opportunities in Syria, particularly in exports, pointing to joint government committees formed to strengthen cooperation in areas such as trade, transport, administration, water and agriculture.
Despite regional challenges, Jordan's economy has posted positive indicators, with growth reaching 2.7 per cent in the first quarter of this year, compared with projections of 2.2 per cent, Qudah said. National exports rose by 9.2 per cent during the first five months of the year, supported by diversification into new markets, including Europe.
Foreign direct investment also grew by 14 per cent, underscoring Jordan's attractiveness as an investment destination despite regional instability, he added.,
Highlighting the importance of the industrial sector, Qudah described it as a key driver of the national economy, reducing unemployment, generating jobs, supporting business activity and serving as the backbone of exports. He stressed that investment in industry enhances export capacity, reduces the trade deficit, and substitutes imports with locally made goods.
Calling Jordanian industry a 'success story,' Qudah cited examples of Jordanian expertise and products reaching global markets. He noted that Jordanian-made air-conditioning systems are installed at four NASA facilities and at Los Angeles International Airport, while Jordanian pharmaceutical companies have acquired major global firms and continue to export technical expertise worldwide.
Qudah outlined several government support programmes aimed at strengthening competitiveness, including the Industrial Support Fund, which allocates JD30–35 million annually, and an export promotion programme with JD15–20 million in funding.
He also announced that natural gas will be supplied to three industrial zones by the end of this year, with plans to extend supply to other industrial cities to reduce costs and enhance competitiveness.
On trade policy, Qudah underlined that legislative and procedural reforms have been implemented to boost exports, supported by Jordan's wide network of bilateral and multilateral free trade agreements, including the Greater Arab Free Trade Agreement and the Jordan–US Free Trade Agreement, which has significantly expanded Jordanian exports to the American market.

HONOR sets new benchmarks for foldable smartphones

Foldable smartphones are poised for a bright future, fuelled by strong consumer demand, particularly in emerging markets, as competition among major brands intensifies, according to an industry veteran. Laurance Li, Country Manager at HONOR – GCC, proudly highlighted that the HONOR Magic V5 has set new standards in the foldable smartphone category and is expected to dominate the global market, thanks to its appeal among tech-savvy consumers in the Middle East and North Africa. 'The future of smartphones lies in the foldable segment,' Li stated in an exclusive interview with BTR. 'Tech-savvy consumers won't compromise on the size and quality of their devices when it comes to balancing their professional responsibilities and personal entertainment, especially with innovative products like the Magic V5,' he said. Laurance Li expressed confidence in the burgeoning demand for foldable smartphones, noting that HONOR plans to release more variants to meet the rising needs of consumers worldwide this year. According to a report by the International Data Corporation (IDC), the foldable smartphone market is projected to grow significantly, reaching 45.7 million units by 2028, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 20.3% from 2023 to 2028. While the foldable segment is expanding rapidly, it still accounts for a relatively small share of the overall smartphone market. The IDC forecasts a 37.6% increase in foldable phone shipments for 2024, predicting a rise from 18.1 million units in 2023 to 25 million units shipped in 2024. The report also indicates that emerging markets will largely drive this growth as prices decrease and more brands enter the foldable smartphone arena. Why HONOR Magic V5 Enhancing the AI-first experience, Laurance Li said the HONOR Magic V5 introduces a powerful new feature — the Magic Sidebar. 'This smart feature suggests helpful features on the side bar based on what you're doing. With the Magic Sidebar, you don't need to switch between apps to find translation or summary, because everything you need appears right when you need it.' 'We have also reinvented the operating system to enable better collaboration between hardware and software based on understanding of user intents. While traditional OS mainly runs on a device-based kernel, we introduced a human-based kernel to learn about and analyze user habits, personal intents as well as the environment, so the double kernel driven AI OS can understand you better, predicting and providing the services you need,' he added. He said the HONOR Magic V5 integrates several advanced Gemini models to power its AI capabilities. Central to this is Gemini Live, an AI assistant designed for real-time interaction and multitasking. 'The collaboration fully unlocks the HONOR Magic V5's multitasking capability, delivering a next-level Gemini experience. Gemini Live analyses live video feeds to recognize objects, text, and scenes, providing immediate insights without switching apps. It supports screen sharing with the AI assistant, allowing the device to understand and summarize complex content such as legal documents or financial charts, offering context-aware help tailored to user needs.' AI-driven Smart Features Laurance Li said the HONOR Magic V5 offers several smart features powered by on-device AI. AI communication: These include AI Call Translation, powered by HONOR on-device call translation large model. By processing everything locally on the device, it ensures complete privacy, with no audio data sent externally. This real-time translation feature enables smooth phone conversations between users who speak different languages, with only one party needing to use an HONOR device. AI photography: The HONOR AI Super Zoom uses an on-device AI RAW model to improve image clarity and sharpness up to 30x zoom, ensuring clear and detailed photos. For zoom levels beyond 30x, cloud processing is used to further enhance image quality. AI Security: HONOR Deepfake Detection also operates fully on-device to identify AI-generated face manipulations during video calls. This approach safeguards user privacy while providing critical security in an age of increasing AI-driven misinformation. Future Belongs to AI Looking ahead, Laurance Li said AI will become even more deeply embedded in our daily mobile experiences. 'We believe smartphones will evolve from being just tools into intelligent companions that understand your preferences, anticipate your needs, help solve complex problems, and inspire creativity. With AI, interactions will become more natural and human-like, delivering greater efficiency and more meaningful digital experiences,' he said. He said the UAE is home to a tech-savvy population with busy lifestyles that demand the latest innovations in technology, photography, and privacy. HONOR meets these needs by integrating advanced AI technologies into its smartphones, offering features like Magic Sidebar, Gemini Live for multitasking, AI Super Zoom for stunning photography, real-time AI Translation to break language barriers, and AI Deepfake Detection to ensure privacy and security. 'In line with the UAE's rapid digitalisation, HONOR also pre-installs the UAE PASS app on its latest flagship, the HONOR Magic V5. Developed in partnership with the UAE's Digital Government Regulatory Authority, UAE PASS provides secure, seamless access to government and private sector services from the moment users start their device. This integration highlights HONOR's commitment to delivering not just cutting-edge AI but also meaningful, locally relevant digital solutions for UAE consumers,' he said. Outlook for the foldable smartphones Laurance Li sees bright future for foldable smartphones and said HONOR is ready to cater to the growing demand of this segment by offering more variants in future. 'At HONOR, we welcome competition as a catalyst for innovation and growth within the foldable market. The potential addition of new players validates the increasing consumer interest and demand for foldable devices,' he said. He said HONOR has been a pioneer in the foldable space, consistently pushing the boundaries of technology and design with each generation of our foldable smartphones. 'Through relentless innovation and a focus on breakthroughs in both the thinness and weight of foldable devices, HONOR is the industry leader, creating smartphones that are not only as lightweight and comfortable to hold as bar phones, but also deliver a premium user experience,' he said. 'We listen closely to our customers and prioritise features and functionalities that genuinely enhance their mobile experience. This includes continuous improvements over many years in display technology, hinge design, software optimisation, camera performance, and overall device durability,' according to Laurance Li. Ultimately, he said the goal is to enhance the appeal of foldable technology, making it accessible and desirable to a broader audience, thus paving the way for the future of mobile devices. 'We welcome new competitors to join the market and help to push the industry forwards,' he said. Fastest-growing Tech Brand Referring to the latest data, Laurance Li said HONOR is the fastest-growing tech brand in the Middle East and North Africa catering to the needs of tech-savvy consumers in the region. 'While we don't publish market share by country, internal data shows that HONOR is the fastest-growing tech brand in the MENA region, with shipments rising over 83% — a milestone no other smartphone brand here has achieved. In the UAE alone, our sales in the first half of 2025 increased by 75% compared to the same period in 2024. Our HONOR Magic V3 doubled foldable shipments, and our HONOR 400 series grew by 200%, showing that more consumers are choosing HONOR for both foldable and flagship smartphones,' Laurance Li explained. In reply to a question, he said the HONOR Magic V5 addresses the toughest challenges in foldable technology — battery life, durability, and hinge strength. It features the industry's largest silicon-carbon battery in a foldable, delivering a 5,820mAh capacity with 15% high-silicon content. 'Our HONOR Super Steel Hinge withstands 500,000 folds and can support up to 100kgs controlled conditions. The device also achieves IP58 and IP59 ratings for dust and water resistance, while its Carbon Fiber Reinforced Inner Display Panel offers exceptional protection with 15 times better scratch resistance than standard glass,' he said. At the core of this engineering is HONOR's AI Manufacturing process, the industry's most advanced AI-powered production system, which enhances structural precision, durability, and design integrity. This commitment is backed by strong investment in R&D — over 70% of our workforce is dedicated to it, and we reinvest 11.5% of our annual revenue into innovation, according to Laurance Li. 'On the retail side, we believe that both physical experience and ecommerce matters. We are expanding our HONOR Experience Stores so customers can try our latest technology firsthand. Last year we opened two stores in Dubai and one in Abu Dhabi. This month, we are opening another in Abu Dhabi's Reem Mall. This year we have seen three-digit growth in all our ecommerce partner platforms such as noon, amazon and etc,' he said. After-sales Care Feature Laurance Li said HONOR sees huge growth potential in foldable smartphone segment and offering some of the extra features to facilitate Magic V5 buyers in the region. 'For the HONOR Magic V5, we are making after-sales care a top priority, especially for foldable users who may be concerned about screen replacement costs. As part of our launch offer, customers who pre-order or purchase within the first month will receive HONOR Care with 12 months of screen protection. This covers one free replacement for the inner screen and one for the outer screen, with no cost for parts or labour. Purchases made after the first month will still be eligible for six months of screen protection.' 'We also have prepared variety of added value surprises for customers across our select retail partners,' he said. The HONOR Magic V5 is be available in elegant colour options — Dawn Gold, Ivory White, Reddish Brown, and Black — at a price of Dh6,499 with gift package valued at Dh3,396, which includes a free Bose Speaker, HONOR Magic Pen, HONOR Case, and HONOR VIP Care+. Exclusive: 15-year-old UAE-based motorsport prodigy Mohammed Mneimneh talks success on the track

As the dust settles on the latest racing season, the spotlight shines brightly on UAE's rising star, Mohammed Mneimneh. And in a surprising show of support, the India-based Poonawalla family's backing of Mohammed has given the young racing sensation a significant boost. Yohan and Michelle Poonawalla of the Poonawalla group have stepped into the UAE's luxury motorsport space and recently announced their support of 15-year-old Lebanese karting prodigy Mohammed Mneimneh, one of the fastest-rising names in Middle Eastern motorsport. Khaleej Times spoke exclusively to the Poonawallas and Mohammed to understand all about this intriguing alliance and what it means for racer's future in the sport. 'For me, encouraging young talent is both a passion and a responsibility. I have always believed that when someone possesses extraordinary drive, discipline, and potential, they deserve the opportunity to flourish. Mohammed's dedication to motorsport at such a young age is deeply inspiring. It reflects the same determination and commitment I value in every field, whether it's business or philanthropy. Motorsport is a demanding discipline, and supporting Mohammed is my way of not only encouraging his journey but also contributing to a culture where young people feel empowered to pursue their dreams fearlessly,' says Yohan Poonawalla. Both Yohan and Michelle are passionate about art, culture and sports. Michelle believes: 'Art and sport, though seemingly different, share the same power: they inspire, unite, and evoke emotion. There are many beautiful examples of the two worlds merging, such as 'art cars,' where leading artists collaborate with manufacturers to transform vehicles into moving canvases. For the youth, these intersections demonstrate that creativity and performance can coexist.' For the uninitiated, Yohan has been India's top car collector and a motorsport enthusiast, and this sponsorship also symbolises his passion for motoring and enabling young talent like Mohammed to inch closer to the pinnacle of motorsports. He speaks enthusiastically about the motorsport space and some beautiful memories he holds close to his heart. 'While I have been fortunate to witness some incredible motorsport events, such as Formula 1, my personal highlights come from being behind the wheel. Driving in the Mille Miglia UAE for three consecutive years has been a truly special experience. Last year, being honoured with the 'Hero of the Rally' award was another unforgettable moment. It was the perfect reminder that motorsport is not just about speed, but also about resilience and spirit,' he says. Motorsports in UAE is experiencing major growth, driven by strong government support, world-class infrastructure and an increased demand and popularity of motorsport events. Middle East is emerging as a key player due to high-profile events such as the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and increased investments in motorsport facilities (According to Global Motorsport Market survey 2025). However, Yohan feels young racers still need some support. 'Motorsport in India is still at a relatively nascent stage compared to global arenas, but there is no shortage of talent. What is often missing is structured support, awareness, and the right platforms to compete at higher levels. In the Middle East, while motorsport has grown significantly over the past decade, young racers still need opportunities that connect them to the international stage. My vision is to not only support individual drivers like Mohammed but also help elevate the profile of motorsport across both regions, whether that's through sponsorship or connecting young racers with the right training and exposure. The idea is to build a culture where motorsport is seen as a viable and celebrated career path, not just a passion.' Beyond steering the Poonawalla Group, Yohan and Michelle are effortlessly balancing their high-end lifestyle with meaningful contributions towards society. Now, the family's partnership with Mohammed is a game-changer in international motorsport. The 15-year-old is widely regarded as one of the most promising young drivers in the region. With his eyes set on the international racing scene, Mohammed is preparing to compete in the Senior X30 World Final this October, where he will proudly represent the UAE. Mohammed is thankful as he tells us: 'I am truly honoured and deeply grateful to receive the support of Yohan and Michelle Poonawalla. Their belief in my journey means more than I can put into words. This is not just a sponsorship, but a powerful source of motivation. This partnership gives me the confidence to pursue my goals on the international stage, and I will strive to make them and my country proud,' promises Mohammed. The duo has big plans for Mohammed and the luxury motorsport space. 'Over the next few years, we would like to see him use these resources for opportunities to compete on international platforms and represent Lebanon with pride. As for the luxury motorsport market in the UAE, it continues to evolve rapidly. The region's infrastructure, world-class tracks, and global appeal have made it a hub for both high-level racing and premium automotive culture. I believe the next phase will see even greater integration of youth development programmes, technology-driven racing, and lifestyle experiences that merge motorsport with luxury living. It's an exciting time to be part of this landscape,' concludes Yohan.

Saudi Arabia among top emerging global economies in AI readiness, shows report

Image: Getty Images/ For illustrative purposes Saudi Arabia stands among the top emerging global economies in AI readiness, according to a GCC AI Pulse: Mapping the Region's Readiness for an AI-Driven Future . The study, based on BCG's inaugural AI Maturity Matrix, designates Saudi Arabia as an 'AI Contender', a category it shares with 31 other economies worldwide, including the UAE. The matrix categorises economies into four archetypes based on their AI readiness: AI Emergents, Practitioners, Contenders, and Pioneers, with the latter group including nations like the US, UK, and China. Other Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, including Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, and Bahrain, were categorised as 'AI Practitioners'. The report indicates significant opportunities for further advancing AI readiness and leadership across the region, with Saudi Arabia demonstrating notable progress. 'Saudi Arabia's strategic investments and ambitious vision in artificial intelligence exemplify how nations can leverage emerging technologies to rapidly transform their economies and enhance their global stature,' said Dr Akram Awad, MD and partner at BCG. 'By aiming to attract $20bn in investments and developing sophisticated regulatory frameworks, Saudi Arabia is positioning itself at the forefront of AI innovation.' Awad added that sustaining this dynamic growth will require 'fostering an innovative ecosystem built on empowering local talent, enhancing academic-industry collaborations, and forming global partnerships that can catapult the nation into new frontiers of technological achievements.' Saudi Arabia has a strategic strategy to advance AI readiness The kingdom has made substantial advancements in AI since establishing the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) in 2019 and launching its national AI strategy in 2020. The strategy aims for Saudi Arabia to rank among the top 15 AI nations by 2030. The country's AI talent pool has expanded to approximately 5,000 specialists. However, the report highlights an ongoing need to develop a self-sustaining ecosystem to reduce dependency on expatriate workers. In terms of policy, Saudi Arabia introduced AI ethics principles in 2023 to align with global standards and has been strengthening its AI governance and regulatory frameworks to bolster AI adoption. In May, Saudi Arabia launched This initiative is aligned with Vision 2030, with the goal of establishing Saudi Arabia as a global leader in AI innovation, research, and sustainable economic transformation. On the investment front, Saudi Arabia has set a target to attract $20bn in AI investments by 2030. The country registered nearly 200 AI-related patents in 2023, reflecting a significant increase since 2019. Despite this progress, it continues to aim for the level of breakthrough innovations observed in leading global economies. The domestic AI ecosystem is described as robust, with 72 per cent of Saudi companies incorporating emerging AI technologies, supported by substantial investments in cloud and AI infrastructure. Strengths identified in Saudi Arabia's approach include its strong ambition, solid digital infrastructure, and effective AI governance. Areas for enhancement However, the report indicates areas requiring further enhancement, such as expanding the AI talent pool, increasing investments for long-term AI growth, and a greater focus on research and innovation to achieve global impact. 'Saudi Arabia's progress in AI governance and adoption is commendable, showcasing a material increase in AI-related national maturity with widespread corporate adoption of AI technologies and ramp-up in patents,' said Rami Mourtada, partner and director at BCG. 'Its true capacity to emerge as a global leader will hinge on its ability to rapidly scale-up and broaden its AI achievements.' Mourtada emphasised that this includes 'fostering a self-sustaining AI talent ecosystem, bridging the gap in breakthrough research, and driving impactful innovations beyond infrastructure and investment as critical areas.' He concluded that the challenge lies in translating substantial financial, service delivery, and infrastructural investments into 'tangible global AI leadership and pioneering impact that can transform both the domestic and international landscapes.' BCG's GCC AI Pulse report suggests several approaches to foster AI maturity in the Gulf. These include expanding AI capabilities through dedicated upskilling programs and attracting global talent to broaden the existing talent pool and infuse the regional market with international expertise and perspectives crucial for innovative leaps. Furthermore, governance structures should be realigned to better adhere to evolving AI ethics frameworks and international standards, ensuring responsible and sustainable AI development. Advancements in policies are expected to solidify Saudi Arabia's reputation as a leader in ethical AI practices. The report also identifies significant room for intensifying research and development investments to foster stronger academia-industry collaborations. This is aimed at spurring innovation and cementing Saudi Arabia's position as a hub for cutting-edge technological advancements, potentially matching and even surpassing global AI leaders such as the US, China, Singapore, the UK, and Canada in specific areas.
