Man charged with robbing elderly woman of gold chain, RM31

BUTTERWORTH: A 30-year-old man was charged in the Sessions Court with robbing an elderly woman of a broken gold chain and RM31.
Muhd Syahrul Syazlan Jailani, 30, was accused of robbing Salmiah Haroon, 71, in front of a house on Jalan Bagan Lalang, Ladang Desa Tok Sani, at 8.45am on Aug 14.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge before Judge Nor Azah Kasran.
The charge was framed under Section 392 of the Penal Code for robbery, which carries a maximum jail sentence of 14 years and may include a fine or whipping.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Rifaie Mohamed proposed bail of RM10,000.
However, Syahrul asked the court for a lower amount, saying his wife had just completed chemotherapy and his mother was also experiencing health problems.
Judge Nor Azah set bail at RM7,000, with the additional condition that Syahrul report to the nearest police station every month.
The court set Sept 23 for document submission.

Suhakam: Current bullying complaint system ineffective, 'one-stop centre' needed

KUALA LUMPUR: The Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) has urged the government to strengthen the complaints system for bullying cases, saying the current mechanisms are fragmented and ineffective. Children's commissioner Dr Farah Nini Dusuki highlighted the lack of a 'one-stop centre' that filters and directs bullying complaints to all relevant agencies. "What we have now is a lot of gaps. The system is split and not comprehensive," she said. Farah was speaking at a special briefing session for members of parliament on bullying, held by the Parliamentary Special Select Committee on Women, Children and Community Development today. The session was delivered by the Childline Foundation in collaboration with the Office of the Children's Commissioner (OCC) and Suhakam. Farah said that existing platforms were also not child-friendly, pointing to the Education Ministry's reporting process via Public Complaints Management System (SisPAA), which uses bureaucratic terms and has no chat feature suitable for those under 18. She added that there are barriers such as digital inequality, language gaps, and a lack of accessibility for people with disabilities. Meanwhile, Farah acknowledged to lawmakers that the legislation process is long and thus urged the promotion of the bullying amendments to the Penal Code. The commissioner was referring to the Penal Code (Amendment) Act 2025 (Act A1750) introduced earlier this year, which aimed to address bullying, harassment, insults and identity misuse, including those committed online. "It may not be the best law, but at least it describes bullying as specific criminal offences," she said. Nevertheless, she called for a law for child offenders to be diverted to intervention programmes. "Diversion does not mean we are not taking action. We are taking action more proactively," she explained. Farah said that criminal charges should be a last resort and that child offenders should be dealt with outside of the criminal procedure. "If we can, we want to focus on children outside the criminal procedure. If someone really cannot be rehabilitated, then you can charge them under the Penal Code. "In Malaysia, the moment something happens, we go straight to punishment. We cannot have that kind of attitude. We must use hikmah (wisdom)," she said, adding that most troubled children she had met had roots of hardship at home.

Two men arrested for armed robbery at hair salon in Sibu

SIBU: Two men have been arrested in connection with an armed robbery that occurred at a hair salon in Jalan Chambers here on Monday (Aug 18). Sibu OCPD Asst Comm Zulkipli Suhaili said the incident happened at about 11pm, when the complainant and her friend were resting in the salon when he was approached by an unknown man. 'The suspect pointed an object that looked like a pistol at the forehead of the complainant's friend and forced him to hand over valuables. Out of fear for his safety, the victim surrendered two smartphones before the suspect fled the scene," said ACP Zulkipli in a statement on Wednesday (Aug 20). Acting on information and investigation results, police arrested two men aged 25 and 44 at about 10.30am the following day. Preliminary checks revealed that the first suspect had 11 past offences in his criminal record involving five housebreaking and theft cases, one summons case and five drug-related cases. The second suspect had five offences on his record, including one for impersonating a public official, one theft case and three drug-related cases. Police have also seized several items, including a replica pistol, two smartphones belonging to the victim and a multi-purpose knife. 'The case is being investigated under Sections 395 and 397 of the Penal Code for armed robbery using a weapon. Upon conviction, the offence carries imprisonment of up to 20 years and whipping,' ACP Zulkipli said. Both suspects have been remanded for seven days until Aug 27 to assist investigations.

2 Immigration officers nabbed for taking RM400,000 in bribes

KUANTAN: Two Immigration Department officers have been remanded for allegedly accepting RM400,000 in bribes to allow foreigners arriving at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) to enter the country without going through proper procedures. Magistrate Wahidah Zainal Abidin granted a seven-day remand order until Aug 26 after reviewing the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's (MACC) application at the magistrate's court here today. Sources said the men — both in their 40s — were arrested simultaneously in Nilai, Negri Sembilan and Johor Baru on Monday. The arrests were part of a large-scale MACC operation to cripple the "counter setting" syndicate at KLIA1 and KLIA2. "The suspects are believed to have pocketed hundreds of thousands of ringgit in bribes in exchange for releasing groups of foreigners without following immigration protocols. "They allegedly committed the offence between 2022 and last year. Following their arrest, MACC also seized cash and froze several bank accounts belonging to them," the source said. Pahang MACC director Mohd Shukor Mahmud, when contacted, confirmed the arrests, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009.
