Man charged with robbing elderly woman of gold chain, RM31
BUTTERWORTH: A 30-year-old man was charged in the Sessions Court with robbing an elderly woman of a broken gold chain and RM31.
Muhd Syahrul Syazlan Jailani, 30, was accused of robbing Salmiah Haroon, 71, in front of a house on Jalan Bagan Lalang, Ladang Desa Tok Sani, at 8.45am on Aug 14.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge before Judge Nor Azah Kasran.
The charge was framed under Section 392 of the Penal Code for robbery, which carries a maximum jail sentence of 14 years and may include a fine or whipping.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Rifaie Mohamed proposed bail of RM10,000.
However, Syahrul asked the court for a lower amount, saying his wife had just completed chemotherapy and his mother was also experiencing health problems.
Judge Nor Azah set bail at RM7,000, with the additional condition that Syahrul report to the nearest police station every month.
The court set Sept 23 for document submission.
