Nagpur: Western Coalfields Limited (WCL), in a major CSR initiative, has sanctioned Rs2 crore for the desilting and cleaning of the Irai river in Chandrapur.
The district administration, Chandrapur, had initiated a mission from April 25 to June 20 to desilt the Irai river stretch from Chandrapur city to its confluence with the Wardha river, aiming to prevent monsoon flooding, improve hygiene, and mitigate serious public health hazards caused by water stagnation and pollution.
WCL, being a key stakeholder in the local ecosystem due to the proximity of its operational mines, responded to the request made by the collector of Chandrapur. Accordingly, on June 9 an MoU for the said work was signed at a ceremony held at Niyojan Bhavan in Chandrapur. The MoU was signed by Harshad Datar, area general manager, Chandrapur Area on behalf of WCL and Vipin Paliwal, commissioner on behalf of the Chandrapur Municipal Corporation.
The event was held in the presence of Chandrapur guardian minister Ashok Janabai Ramaji Uike, Chandrapur MP Pratibha Suresh Dhanorkar, Gadchiroli-Chimur MP Dr Kirsan Namdeo, Leader of Opposition, Maharashtra, Vijay Wadettiwar, collector Vinay Gowda GC, CEO of Zilla Parishad Pulkit Singh, SP Sudarshan Mummaka, KirtiKumar Bhangdiya, Kishore Jorgewar, Subhash Dhote, Karan Sanjay Deotale (MLAs), and Sudhakar Adbale and Abhijit Wanjarri (MLCs).

PDKV nod to Maharajbagh Zoo Foundation After 14 yrs
1 2 Nagpur: Dr Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth (PDKV), Akola, finally approved the formation of the Maharajbagh Zoo Foundation after a long wait of 14 years. The move aligns with guidelines set by the Central Zoo Authority (CZA), New Delhi. This step aims to steer the zoo towards more efficient development, and professional management. The order, issued by PDKV, establishes a nine-member executive committee with the dean (agriculture) of PDKV, Akola, acting as chairman. The zoo's in-charge, Dr Sunil Bawaskar, will serve as secretary, supported by senior officials from Nagpur's College of Agriculture. The committee will have five members from PDKV and four from the College of Agriculture. The foundation is expected to be registered with the charity commissioner's office soon. Bawaskar emphasised the initiative's significance saying, "The foundation marks a historic milestone in ensuring Maharajbagh Zoo meets modern zoological standards." He also expressed gratitude for the guidance and support extended by PDKV vice-chancellor Dr Sharad Gadakh. Drawing 3,500–4,200 visitors monthly and generating about Rs2 crore annually, Maharajbagh Zoo is Vidarbha's only zoological park frequently used for school picnics and educational tours. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Wirolegi: Unsold Sofas Prices May Surprise You (Prices May Surprise You) Sofas | Search Ads Search Now Undo The CZA had suggested a local governing body for zoological parks as they are being operated by different govt agencies. In some cases, the forest department, civic body or state govt run zoos in the country. In such scenarios the management of zoos becomes complicated with park keepers requiring several permission for even minor works. The move to form a trust shall help Maharajbagh Zoo upgrade its facilities and directly follow up with concerned authorities for funds. The Maharajbagh zoo's redevelopment has been in limbo for years as it was seen just as an extension of the PDKV which primarily focuses on agricultural and related activities. Officials at PDKV acknowledge that the university's focus often leans toward academic priorities, with zoo-related matters receiving less attention. A comprehensive Rs83.24 crore development proposal, submitted to the Maharashtra govt in 2020-21, is still awaiting approval. The plan includes modernising animal and bird enclosures, installing moats instead of rusted iron cages to enhance visibility, improving visitor facilities (like washrooms, internal roads, a library, cafeteria, and landscaped gardens), and boosting animal infrastructure at Maharajbagh Zoo. Dr Bawaskar had followed up regularly with state authorities. "Once the Maharajbagh Zoo Society (Foundation) is formed, the proposal will be expedited," he said. Banks only decide on minimum a/c balance: Guv
Gozaria (Guj): Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Sanjay Malhotra on Monday said banks are free to decide the minimum balance for savings accounts and that it does not fall under the regulatory domain of the RBI. He was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a function on 'Financial Inclusion Saturation Drive' organized at Gozaria village Panchayat in Gujarat's Mehsana district. Asked about a private bank increasing the minimum balance required for savings accounts, Malhotra said: 'The RBI has left it to individual banks to decide on what minimum balance they want to set. Some banks have kept it at Rs10,000, some have kept Rs2,000 and some have exempted (customers). It is not in the regulatory domain (of RBI).' In a recent decision, private lender ICICI Bank increased the minimum balance requirement for those opening new savings accounts from August 1. The minimum average monthly balance (MAB) has been increased by five times to Rs50,000 from Rs10,000 on savings bank account, as per the lender's website. Similarly, MAB for semi-urban locations and rural locations have been increased five times to Rs25,000 and Rs10,000, respectively. Incidentally, the State Bank of India has decided not to penalise savings account holders if they do not keep minimum balance. Traditionally, public-sector banks have lower balance requirements compared to private lenders with the requirement waived for Jan Dhan accounts. Several public-sector banks have done away with the requirement, and customers who fail to maintain the minimum prescribed balance do not need to pay a penalty. Speaking at the event, Malhotra said digital literacy was very important to succeed in the new age. 'Earlier they used to say if you do not study you will not prosper. In today's age, this is the same for digital literacy. If you do not have digital literacy you will not progress,' he said.
