Delhi govt requests SC to review 2018 blanket ban affecting middle class the most

ANI file photo NEW DELHI: In a bold step, the Delhi Govt on Friday requested the Supreme Court to reconsider its 2018 blanket ban on plying of over 10-year-old diesel and 15-year-old petrol vehicles on the roads of entire National Capital Region saying stricter BS-VI norm compliant vehicles emit far less pollutants compared to BS-IV vehicles. It requested the SC to direct the Union govt or Air Quality Management to 'carry out a suitable broad-based, scientific study on the need for continuance of a complete ban on playing of 15 or more years old petrol and 10 or more years old diesel vehicles of all categories in NCR, imposed by the SC through its order on Oct 10, 2018'. The Delhi govt said the blanket ban, not backed by any scientific study, does not differentiate between poorly maintained, The directive to off-road vehicles purely on the basis of age disproportionately affects the middle-class population whose vehicles are less used, well-maintained, and pollution norm compliant, the govt said. 'Studies indicate that these vehicles often have significantly lower annual mileage and contribute negligibly to overall emissions,' it said. It said the significant improvement in Pollution Under Control Technology, increased coverage of PUC testing, stricter monitoring of emission standards, transition to BS-VS engines and other measures have suitably addressed the concerns that had impelled the SC to pass the order seven years ago. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Remember Him? Sit Down Before You See What He Looks Like Now 33 Bridges Undo Road-worthiness is a technical and scientific issue that must be linked to actual emissions of a vehicle, which is required to be banned, and not a blanket ban based on the age of the vehicles, it said, echoing the popular sentiments of people living in the national capital region and Delhi. Delhi govt, through an application settled by additional solicitor general Aishwarya Bhati, said, 'There is a need for a graded, balanced and technology riven regime to handle vehicular pollution issue and instead of blanket ban, a scientific, data-driven framework should be developed taking into account all parameters to ascertain individual emission levels of vehicles.' Repeatedly stressing that the 2018 blanket ban order needs reconsideration, the BJP govt said vehicular pollution constitutes only one of the several sources of air-pollution, including stubble burning, biomass burning, road and construction dust, industrial emissions coupled with weather and meteorological factors and the intensity of pollution varies from season to season. Delhi govt said its transport department has strictly implemented PUC has resulted in issuance of 1,63,103 challans in the first seven months of this year, compared to 29,589 challans issued in 2021, 43,494 in 2022, 36,176 in 2023, and 68,077 in 2024. It said with the augmentation of CNG and electric buses and improvement in road infrastructure, the pollution caused by vehicles has reduced. It said the good AQI days have increased from 159 in 2018 to 209 in 2024 and good AQI days this year till July was 106. The robust implementation of Graded Response Plan (GRAP) has contributed to reducing pollution in the national capital, it said.

Indias edge data centre capacity projected to triple to 200-210 MW by 2027: ICRA

New Delhi [India], July 26 (ANI): India's edge data centre capacity is expected to expand significantly to 200-210 Megawatt (MW) by 2027 from 60-70 MW in 2024, marking a 3x increase, driven by the proliferation of emerging technologies, according to the rating agency ICRA. Edge data centres are smaller, decentralised facilities located closer to end-users and devices. Unlike traditional data centres, which are typically large and centralised, edge data centres enable real-time data processing with minimal latency. Global data centre capacity (including capacity held by cloud operators) is estimated at around 50 Gigawatts (GW) as of December 2024, of which about 10 per cent is dedicated to edge data centres. The US commands over 44 per cent of worldwide edge data centre capacity, followed by Europe, the Middle East and Africa (the EMEA) region at 32 per cent and Asia Pacific (the APAC) region at 24 per cent. India is a relatively new entrant in the edge data centre market. The current edge data centre capacity as a percentage of India's total data centre capacity stands at around 5 per cent. Further, excluding the edge data centre capacity used for captive purposes by one of the large data centre operators, the current edge data centre capacity as a percentage of total capacity is as low as 1 per cent. Giving more insights, Anupama Reddy, Vice President and Co-Group Head, Corporate Ratings, ICRA, said, "Edge data centres differ from traditional data centres in multiple parameters like size, location, scale, time taken to construct, capex cost per MW, distance from end user, etc." "In the Indian context, traditional data centres and edge data centres are complementary pillars of digital infrastructure. With the expanding cloud ecosystem of India, traditional data centres will keep fuelling mass-scale computing, artificial intelligence (AI), and cloud workloads, and edge data centres will facilitate real-time processing and localised services." Reddy said that traditional and edge data centres are expected to operate in the hub-and-spoke model to enhance efficiencies across sectors such as healthcare, banking, agriculture, Defence, and manufacturing, etc. Despite the promising outlook, some of the key challenges for edge data centres include security vulnerabilities due to remote deployments (majorly in tier II and tier III cities), rapid technological changes that risk obsolescence, a shortage of skilled professionals in remote areas, and interoperability issues with traditional data centres.

Russian Su-57 or US-made F-35: Which 5th-gen fighter jet will India purchase? Good news for India due to...

The Indian Air Force is about to make a landmark decision to acquire fifth-generation fighter jets. As the retirement of the MiG-21 fleet nears completion, India is likely to acquire 40 advanced jets. Some experts suggest that India will diversify its sources and not rely solely upon one supplier, as per media reports. Instead, India may purchase fighter jets from a group of countries and strengthen its defense capacity. Which 5th-gen fighter jet will India purchase? At present, much curiosity exists around what fifth-generation fighter jets will be used in the Indian Air Force. The world possesses just two fifth-generation fighter jets. Russia is the first such country which developed the Sukhoi-57. The second country is the United States, which has the F-35 Lightning, which is already in service in the US and some NATO air forces. Obtaining a deal for these jets should not be very difficult for India. Check their features below. What are the two main contenders from which India can buy 5th-generation fighter jets? The two countries from which India could potentially procure fifth-generation aircraft were the United States and Russia. However, the government has not taken any decision on the issue of fifth-generation fighter jets, but discussions are going on in this regard. According to the news agency ANI report, the US has offered the F-35 fighter jet, while Russia has proposed its Su-57 jets for India's consideration. India had opted out of the Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGfA) project many years ago, but there is an option to rejoin it. What are the key features of the Russian Su-57 fighter jet? What is the top speed of the Russian Su-57? Russia's newest addition to the fifth-generation fighter jets is the Sukhoi-57. This aircraft is equipped with stealth technology, making it extremely difficult for radar systems to detect. The Sukhoi-57 has a range of approximately 2,000 kilometers, and the ability to manage speeds of Mach 2 – twice the speed of sound. The Sukhoi-57 is also claimed to be able to withstand approximately 9 Gs of force, meaning it can withstand gravitational forces nine times greater than Earth's gravity. What are the main features of the US-made F-35 fighter jet? What is the top speed of the US-made F-35? Several media reports are suggesting India might choose to buy fifth-generation fighters from several countries, with some from Russia and some from the United States. That is also why the American F-35 has been mentioned. When it comes to speed, the F-35 lags slightly behind Russia's Sukhoi-57. The F-35 can reach a speed of Mach 1.6 while the Sukhoi can reach speed of Mach 2. When looking at range, the F-35 can travel 1,092 kilometers. The American fifth-generation jet is stealthy, like its Russian renderings, and difficult to detect on radar. The F-35 has been sold to various countries by the US in Europe and outside. In this possible deal, India is interestingly considered to have the upper hand, mostly due to the favorable deals from both Russia and America offered to India on fifth-generation jets. If media reports are to be believed, Russia has made a lucrative offer to India. If India purchases the Su-57, it will also be given access to the technology and the manufacturing license for the Su-35. The United States, on the other hand, has indicated that purchasing the F-35 would be a lucrative opportunity that they can capitalize on in a wider trade tariff deal. F-35A or Su-57, which 5th-gen fighter will India buy? Both offers are currently under consideration, but India would first, of course, like to choose an option through a calculated decision since there are pros and cons for both the Su-57 and the F-35. The F-35 is already in service with almost 10 air forces worldwide, but there have also been several reports of technical issues and crashes. There have so far been no accusations of technical issues for the Russian Su-57, and they have only been deployed on limited occasions during certain parts of the Ukraine war, which raises concerns about their potential combat tested reliability.
