Donald Trump and his transactional presidency

Deccan Herald9 hours ago
If, shortly, you read that Donald Trump has managed to annex Greenland, Canada, Panama, and Palestine, you should not in the least bit be surprised. After all, Trump, no original thinker, has been following in the footsteps of Andrew Jackson, the 7th president of the US, and Adolf Hitler – two men for whom territorial expansion through military might, economic blackmail, and genocidal practices was perfectly acceptable. Thucydides, the 5th century BC historian and author of The History of the Peloponnesian War, famously wrote, 'the strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must.' It is only a matter of time before Trump's bullying tactics will result in the whole world, save China, giving in to his demands..Were Trump's territorial expansion plans to come true, the new US would be the largest country in the world, and its population density would go down almost 50%. Annexing Canada and Greenland will add 4.8 million square miles and 43 million people to the American Empire. The latter figure would only be 33 million if one takes into account Trump's plans to deport over ten million 'illegal' immigrants, almost all of whom are non-white, to various third countries such as El Salvador, Guatemala and South Sudan, which would result in a 30% increase in the combined population density of these countries. Contrast this with the 100-year Pax Britannica period, 1815 to 1914, when Britain added around 10 million square miles of territory and 400 million people to its empire..There is an ulterior motive behind Trump's plan to grab Canada and Greenland. These two countries have enormous mineral resources, especially rare earth minerals that are essential in powering electric vehicles, data centres, and consumer/military electronic products. Currently, the US relies on China for its supply of rare earth minerals, a state of affairs that challenges its hegemonic status in the world..Trump's stated intention to grab Palestine and expel its occupants to parts unknown is reminiscent of what President Andrew Jackson (1829-37), labelled 'King Andrew', achieved through the genocidal Indian Removal Act of 1830. The act, which authorised the president to grant Indian tribes unsettled western prairie land in exchange for their desirable territories, resulted in the militarily forced displacement, by foot, of over 100,000 native Americans (thousands died along the way) from the southeastern states to the less desirable central regions. The native Americans were granted US citizenship only in 1924 through an act of Congress; however, they could not vote – a right that was conferred upon them only in 1965. In his second term as President, Trump has been actively pursuing the elimination of birthright citizenship for the children of illegal immigrants, and, unfortunately, he seems to be succeeding..A major cause of World War II was a wrongly perceived need for more living space ('Lebensraum'), Hitler's desire to expand Germany's borders to the east. Hitler was motivated by the so-called Septemberprogramm, a memorandum of German war goals in 1914 which proposed economic and military dominance through territorial expansion in Europe and the colonies in Africa..MAGA plans.Trump's 'Make America Great Again' is no different from the British Empire's rationale for justifying the Opium Wars of 1839-42 and 1856-60 between Qing-dynasty China and Britain – two wars that were more about European mercantile interests forcing China to legalise opium, thereby protecting an illegal and very profitable opium trade by East India Company to overcome a huge trade deficit. The US has a current trade deficit of $295 billion with China..The most punitive of Trump's latest tariffs have been directed at China and many developing and less developed economies in the Global South, in particular Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, India, Bangladesh, and Myanmar – countries which are easily susceptible to being economically and militarily coerced by the US into forming alliances against China. Just recently, Vietnam was coerced into allowing Trump to set up his first golf course in the country. The latest US Defence Intelligence Agency's report characterised China, not Pakistan, as India's principal adversary. If India is forced into an alliance with the US against China, it will end up as collateral damage, much like Laos and Cambodia during the Vietnam War.In keeping with his goal of attaining national purity by getting rid of 'undesirable' populations, Trump has dismantled all Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity (DEI) programmes set up by previous presidents and shut off their funds. Eager to please Trump and ensure their government contracts are not impacted, private companies and universities have followed suit by cancelling their own DEI programmes. Trump and his MAGA followers are committed to making America white again, a hearkening back to a pre-civil rights, slave-holding America. Were you aware that the grandfather of Trump acolyte Elon Musk moved from Canada to South Africa because he preferred to live in racist white South Africa, and that some of Trump's forebears actively collaborated with elements of the Third Reich? As the saying goes, 'the apple never falls far from the tree'..Martin Luther King's dream of his children 'one day living in a nation where they are not judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character' is far from being realised. Trump's slogan of making America great again is only about making America a right-wing white Christian nation and spreading, through military might and economic domination, this unipolar message across the globe. The unipolar message, greatly amplified by social media and Big Tech, does not resonate with China. Pax Britannica culminated in the First World War. Will Pax Americana follow in its footsteps?.History teaches us that trade wars invariably end up being shooting wars. A third Opium War is in the offing, and it is not going to be pretty..(The writer is a retired professor; he has written extensively and presented lectures on the societal and geo-political implications of technology)

Russia launches largest missile and drone barrage on Kyiv since war in Ukraine began

Waves of drones and missiles targeted Kyiv overnight in the largest aerial assault since Russia's invasion of Ukraine began more than three years ago, officials said Friday, amid a renewed Russian push to capture more of its neighbor's land. Hours after the barrage that killed one person and wounded at least 26 others, including a child, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he had a 'very important and productive' phone call with US President Donald Trump. The two leaders discussed how Ukrainian air defenses might be strengthened, possible joint weapons production between the US and Ukraine, and broader US-led efforts to end the war with Russia, according to a statement by Zelenskyy. Asked Friday night by reporters about the call, Trump said, 'We had a very good call, I think.' When asked about finding a way to end the fighting, Trump said: 'I don't know. I can't tell you whether or not that's going to happen.' The US has paused some shipments of military aid to Ukraine, including crucial air defense missiles. Ukraine's main European backers are considering how they can help pick up the slack. Zelenskyy says plans are afoot to build up Ukraine's domestic arms industry, but scaling up will take time. The seven-hour bombardment of Kyiv caused severe damage across multiple districts of the capital in a seven-hour onslaught, authorities said. Blasts lit up the night sky and echoed across the city as air raid sirens wailed. The blue lights of emergency vehicles reflected off high-rise buildings, and debris blocked city streets. 'It was a harsh, sleepless night,' Zelenskyy said. Russia has been stepping up its long-range attacks on Ukrainian cities. Less than a week ago, Russia launched what was then the largest aerial assault of the war. That strategy has coincided with a concerted Russian effort to break through parts of the roughly 1,000-kilometer (620-mile) front line, where Ukrainian troops are under severe pressure. Russia launched 550 drones and missiles across Ukraine during the night, the country's air force said. The majority were Shahed drones, but Russia also launched 11 missiles in the attack. Alya Shahlai, a 23-year-old Kyiv wedding photographer, said that her home was destroyed in the attack. 'We were all in the (basement) shelter because it was so loud, staying home would have been suicidal,' she told The Associated Press. 'We went down 10 minutes before and then there was a loud explosion and the lights went out in the shelter, people were panicking.' Five ambulances were damaged while responding to calls, officials said, and emergency services removed more than 300 tons of rubble. In Friday's call, Zelenskyy said he congratulated Trump and the American people on Independence Day and thanked the United States for its continued support. They discussed a possible future meeting between their teams to explore ways of enhancing Ukraine's protection against air attacks, Zelenskyy said. He added that they talked in detail about defense industry capabilities and direct joint projects with the US, particularly in drone technology. They also exchanged views on mutual procurement, investment, and diplomatic cooperation with international partners, Zelenskyy said. Peace efforts have been fruitless so far. Recent direct peace talks have led only to sporadic exchanges of prisoners of war, wounded troops and the bodies of fallen soldiers. No date has been set for further negotiations. Ukrainian officials and the Russian Defense Ministry said another prisoner swap took place Friday, though neither side said how many soldiers were involved. Zelenskyy said most of the Ukrainians had been in Russian captivity since 2022. The Ukrainian soldiers were classified as 'wounded and seriously ill.' The attack on Kyiv began the same day a phone call took place between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Asked if he made any progress during his call with Putin on a deal to end the fighting in Ukraine, Trump said: 'No, I didn't make any progress with him today at all.' 'I'm very disappointed with the conversation I had today with President Putin because I don't think he's there. I don't think he's looking to stop (the fighting), and that's too bad,' Trump said. According to Yuri Ushakov, Putin's foreign affairs adviser, the Russian leader emphasized that Moscow will seek to achieve its goals in Ukraine and remove the 'root causes' of the conflict. 'Russia will not back down from these goals,' Ushakov told reporters after the call. Russia's army crossed the border on Feb. 24, 2022, in an all-out invasion that Putin sought to justify by falsely saying it was needed to protect Russian-speaking civilians in eastern Ukraine and prevent the country from joining NATO. Zelenskyy has repeatedly called out Russian disinformation efforts. The Ukrainian response needs to be speedy as Russia escalates its aerial attacks. Russia launched 5,438 drones at Ukraine in June, a new monthly record, according to official data collated by The Associated Press. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said earlier this week that Russia also launched more than 330 missiles, including nearly 80 ballistic missiles, at Ukrainian towns and cities that month. Throughout the night, AP journalists in Kyiv heard the constant buzzing of drones overhead and the sound of explosions and intense machine gun fire as Ukrainian forces tried to intercept the aerial assault. 'Absolutely horrible and sleepless night in Kyiv,' Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha wrote on social media platform X. 'One of the worst so far.' Ukraine's Economy Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko described 'families running into metro stations, basements, underground parking garages, mass destruction in the heart of our capital.' 'What Kyiv endured last night, cannot be called anything but a deliberate act of terror,' she wrote on X. Kyiv was the primary target of the countrywide attack. At least 14 people were hospitalized, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko. Zelenskyy called the Kyiv attack 'cynical.' In Moscow, the Defense Ministry claimed its forces targeted factories producing drones and other military equipment in Kyiv. Ukrainian air defenses shot down 270 targets, including two cruise missiles. Another 208 targets were lost from radar and presumed jammed. Russia successfully hit eight locations with nine missiles and 63 drones. Debris from intercepted drones fell across at least 33 sites. In addition to the capital, the Dnipropetrovsk, Sumy, Kharkiv, Chernihiv and Kyiv regions also sustained damage, Zelenskyy said. Emergency services reported damage in at least five of Kyiv's 10 districts.

Donald Trump admits 2020 US election defeat in his ‘life evolution video', says ‘They tried to end my…'

US President Donald Trump released a new video on his social media platform, Truth Social, on July 4, offering a rare and candid reflection on his personal and political journey. The video, titled 'Best life evolution video of President Donald J Trump" has his initial open admission of his loss in the 2020 presidential race. A subtitle in the clip states, 'Lost 2020 elections but remain committed to Make America Great Again (MAGA)", representing a significant shift from his earlier remarks where he consistently asserted the election was 'rigged' or stolen. It traces Trump's life from his childhood, through his business career, and into his years as a political figure, highlighting the challenges and controversies Trump faced during his presidency, referencing times when he felt 'pressured and attacked", It further alludes to a near assassination attempt in July 2024, underscoring the personal risks and dangers Trump says he has endured. It begins with his journey at New York Military Academy from 1959-1964, followed by various tasks after graduation from taking over Trump organisation to building grand Hyatt hotel to opening Trump Tower and others. It says Trump "took financial hits and weathered business bankruptcies in 1990s. It mentions about his presidential bid in June for running in 2015 election as Republican, which he calls 'an upset victory' when he was elected as 45th President on November 8 in 2016, further featuring that he signed key legislation and executive orders during his tenure. The video concludes stating that he has returned to office as 47th President of America on January 20, 2025, adding, 'They tried to end my story…but all they did was write a new chapter in America's History." Trump won the 2024 election on November 6, 2024, defeating Kamala Harris and securing the necessary electoral votes. His inauguration took place in the US Capitol Rotunda on January 20, 2025, becoming the second president in US history, after Grover Cleveland, to serve two non‑consecutive terms. Some of the sweeping executive orders issued by Trump during his initial days in office included rescinding birthright citizenship, revoking gender identity recognitions, and withdrawing the US from the Paris Climate Accord and the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Politically frustrated Congress resorting to nonsensical rhetoric: Assam BJP

Guwahati (Assam) [India], July 5 (ANI): The Indian National Congress has become 'disoriented' and 'frustrated' by the 'strong' and 'determined' steps taken by the BJP-led government under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the NDA alliance to establish a 'peaceful and prosperous' Assam, a press release said. In a press release issued from the headquarters of the BJP State Committee, it has been stated that the government has taken firm measures to evict illegal encroachers from Satra institutions such as Bardowa, Barpeta, Behali, Elengi, which carry the heritage of Assam's national life, and to preserve and develop them into enriched institutions. 'The government has also worked to evict illegal encroachers from Assam's scenic national parks and forests such as Kaziranga, Orang, and Lumding, to conserve these areas and develop them as tourist destinations. Similarly, measures have been taken to evict illegal occupants from government lands, tribal belts and blocks, and VGR (Village Grazing Reserve) lands to preserve them for future generations. By creating special reservation provisions for Assam's indigenous communities, the government has provided merit-based appointments to over one lakh youth, opening new horizons for the younger generation of Assam. Further recruitment initiatives are already underway. Through the delimitation process, the political future of Assam has been secured,' Assam State BJP said in the press release. It also stated that, the government has brought transformative development to the state's infrastructure-- improving connectivity, healthcare, safe drinking water, housing construction, electrification, etc.--with the goal of establishing Assam as a 'powerful' state within the nation. 'The government has granted land rights to the indigenous people of Assam and provided land allotment (myadi patta) to over 10 lakh people. Medical colleges have been established in nearly every district of Assam, making it a leading state in the country in the field of healthcare. Furthermore, by curbing child marriage, Assam has achieved the lowest maternal and infant mortality rate in India. This wave of all-round development has drawn people from every section of society toward the Bharatiya Janata Party, and as a result, the Congress has now resorted to nonsensical rhetoric. Disoriented and politically frustrated, the Congress party--driven by the mirage of power--now wishes to disrupt the peaceful and prosperous environment in Assam and create chaos,' the release stated. The State BJP also said that the Congress party is now relentlessly criticising and personally attacking the BJP and its governance, 'both rightly and wrongly'. BJP workers hold records of the assets of top Congress leaders like Prithani, Jain, Barua, and others. BJP also has detailed accounts of which Congress leaders own which hotels, businesses, resorts, and their locations, the release added. 'The public memory of Assam still vividly holds the account books of corruption statistics associated with Congress leaders,' said the press release. The State BJP warned that if the details of the corruption and 'unchecked' wealth of the current Congress leadership are revealed, it will lead to their 'complete political collapse', it said. (ANI)
