ITALIAN ESCAPE Brit reveals what it's really like to buy a 85p house in Italy – and the amazing secret he found inside
A JEWELLERY dealer swapped the UK for Italy and bought a house for just 85p - and the property came with a surprise.
George Laing, 32, was handed the keys to the abandoned four-bed house in the Sicilian town of Mussomeli in 2022.

It was part of Italy's popular €1 homes scheme, set up to encourage the renovations of crumbling, yet beautiful, properties.
When he moved in he realised very quickly that he had his work cut out.
The electrics, plumbing, bathrooms, structural repairs and roof update all needed doing.
He told The i Paper: "It wasn't liveable at all when I bought it.'
However, after a few years of hard graft, George is now able to live in his Italian dream house while he works on the renovations.
He has almost finished the whole top floor of the property.
In an attempt to save the pennies, he is doing up the entire house on his own.
He has estimated his final costs to be between €5,000 and €10,000.
"Someone else renovating the exact same property could have easily spent €40,000 or more,' he said.
The house spreads over 1,291 square feet over three floors.

It has two bathrooms and a small balcony with views over the town.
He stumbled across some hidden treasure tucked away in various nooks of the house.
A purse filled with gold jewellery was stashed in a bedside table drawer.
Then he came across a padlocked chest in the kitchen, which had a biscuit tin inside.
However, it wasn't filled with biscotti - it carried eight ring boxes.
The most valuable pieces were an 18-carat gold chain, which was valued at £851 and a 19th-century 14-carat emerald stone ring with pearls valued at £595.
Despite keeping a few pieces aside for himself, he auctioned around £2,127 of the stash.
As well as jewellery, there were plenty of antiques, including a vintage 1950s hen clock, a collection of postcards, religious statues, crystal vases and an antique gilded mirror.
Italian law states that as the new owner of the house, George is the rightful owner of the antiques.
The house has been abandoned for decades and the heirs of the property had no interest in personal belongings left in the house.
So under Italian local law, the contents of the house were included with the purchase.
George decided to move to Italy after becoming fed up with the soaring cost of living in the UK.
He said: 'I was spending well over £1,300 a month for my small one-bedroom flat.
"The private water and electricity companies have increased their rates by 400 per cent over the last five years.
"The UK taxes me 40 per cent on my wages. A cup of coffee is £5.
'Once you add this all together I was just about surviving in London even though I was working full time and doing other projects on the side to make money."
He said that he decided he needed to make a change and wanted to "thrive, not survive".

Juventus ‘ready to hijack Arsenal and Man Utd move for Viktor Gyokeres' and will sell EIGHT players to finance transfer

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) JUVENTUS have emerged as a shock candidate to hijack Viktor Gyokeres' transfer to the Premier League, reports suggest. The Swede is one of the most sought-after strikers on the planet after scoring 97 goals across the last two seasons for Sporting Lisbon and firing them to back-to-back league titles. However, according to Corriere dello Sport, Italian giants Juventus want to sign the 27-year-old to make a statement. The report states Sporting are asking for £60million plus £8m in bonuses to sell Gyokeres, although that contradicts previous rumours indicating his release clause actually sat as high as £85m. To finance this, the Serie A club have identified EIGHT names they will look to offload this summer to fund their spending spree. The Bianconeri ranked seventh in the league last season for goals scored, and club chiefs believe Gyokeres can be the solution to their problems. Another high-profile name on the chopping block is former Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz, who ultimately became a squad player following his arrival last summer. The club want around £51m for the pair, considered surplus to requirements by coach Igot Tudor, who replaced the sacked Thiago Motta in March after just 10 months in charge. This being said, they are with the Italian side for their participation in the Club World Cup in the United States ahead of their first match against Al Ain on Thursday. Viktor Gyokeres responds as he is asked if he 'likes London' amid Arsenal transfer links But even if they fail to land Gyokeres, other options are being considered, including Jonathan David, Mateo Retegui and Victor Osimhen. Gyokeres had rejected a move to Man Utd to reunite with Ruben Amorim, according to Portuguese media, which had paved the way for Arsenal to land Mikel Arteta's first pure No.9. Following talks with his agent, Arsenal submitted two bids of £55m and £60m for the striker, but saw both rejected by Sporting. And after growing frustrated at the saga, the Gunners have parked those plans to re-open their enquiries into Aston Villa and England star Ollie Watkins. Arsenal previously bid for Watkins in January, but the late nature of the move in the window and it falling short of Villa's £80m valuation at the time saw the approach slapped down. 4 TRANSFER NEWS LIVE - KEEP UP WITH ALL THE LATEST FROM A BUSY SUMMER WINDOW Join SUN CLUB for the Arsenal Files every Friday plus in-depth coverage and exclusives from The Emirates Join SUN CLUB for the Man Utd Files every Thursday plus in-depth coverage and exclusives from Old Trafford

Viktor Gyokeres' monster £11m contract offer sees club put 8 players up for sale

Manchester United and Arsenal are leading the Premier League interest in Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres but they could face serious interest from overseas following an eye-watering contract offer Juventus are aiming to sell EIGHT stars including Dusan Vlahovic and Douglas Luiz to finance their eye-watering deal for Viktor Gyokeres. The Sporting Lisbon striker has been at the centre of a transfer tug of war between Arsenal and Manchester United throughout the majority of the summer. But Italian side Juventus have attempted to muscle in on a deal over recent days. It's been claimed in Italy that the Serie A giants are willing to offer Gyokeres a stunning £11m-per-year deal to snub Premier League interest and move to Turin. ‌ But the club need to bring in some serious funds in order to afford that contract offer, as well as the €80m plus €10m in add ons (£68.1m plus £8.5m) fee that Sporting are demanding for their star forward. According to Corriere dello Sport, Juventus already have eight players in mind to potentially sell this summer. ‌ Right at the top of that list sit Vlahovic and former Aston Villa star Luiz, who could fetch around £50m between them. Lloyd Kelly, who was only signed permanently from Newcastle this summer, could also be sold. Samuel Mbangula, Daniele Rugani, Filip Kostic, Mattia Perin and Arkadiusz Milik are all candidates to bid farewell, with Juventus hopeful of earning around £85m from all of their sales this summer. And while Juve are aiming to invest those funds in a deal for Gyokeres, the Italian side do have alternatives in mind. Former loanee Randal Kolo Muani remains an option, while Jonathan David could also be a bargain signing after leaving Lille at the end of his contract. Italian-based forwards Victor Osimhen and Mateo Retegui have also reportedly been considered, although neither would come cheap. It remains to be seen if Juventus' efforts are enough to convince Gyokeres to move to Italy. But either way, his potential exit from Sporting has turned bitter with previous reports suggesting he was willing to go on strike in order to force a move away from the club. Gyokeres then took to Instagram to give his side of the story. He wrote: "There is a lot of talks at the moment, most of it is false. I will speak when the time is right." ‌ Where do you think Gyokeres should go? Share your thoughts in the comments below Meanwhile, Sporting president Federico Varandas has confirmed that his side won't be bullied into selling his star forward. Speaking to Record, he said: "One thing you should already know is me better. Threats, blackmail and insults don't work with me. "I can guarantee that Viktor Gyökeres will not leave for €60m+10m (£51m+£8.5m) because I never promised him that. This game that the agent is playing only makes the situation worse. To this day, Sporting has not had an offer for Viktor Gyökeres, neither today nor last season." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Arsenal target Viktor Gyokeres given huge offer as transfer window reopens

Arsenal finished second in the Premier League in each of the last three seasons and are looking for the missing pieces of the puzzle as they aim to go one better next term With a little under two months to go until the start of the new Premier League season, Arsenal and their rivals are getting things in order for a busy summer. Mikel Arteta's side have already said goodbye to the likes of Jorginho and Kieran Tierney, and more ins and outs are expected between now and the big kick-off. The main priority for the Gunners this summer is a new striker. Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres remain high on the list, with Sesko seemingly the more likely candidate, as Arteta aims to avoid a repeat of the attacking issues from the second half of the 2024-25 season. ‌ Some of Arsenal's rivals took full advantage of the early transfer window at the start of the month to get some business done. Chelsea and Manchester City has more pressing deadlines, given the Club World Cup's start date, while other early June deals included Manchester United's swoop for Matheus Cunha. ‌ With Andrea Berta installed as sporting director, fans will be expecting another big-spending summer. Mikel Merino, David Raya and Riccardo Calafiori all joined last term, but the focus this time around is likely to lie at the top end of the pitch. Now that the window has reopened, we may well be in line for a busy few days as the Premier League's big hitters look to make their mark. Here are Mirror Football 's latest lines from North London. Gyokeres' huge offer Juventus are ready to steal a march in the race for Viktor Gyokeres. The Sporting CP striker has been heavily linked with both Arsenal and Manchester United, but the Bianconeri don't appear to be giving up in a hurry. According to reports in Italy, Juve are ready to meet Gyokeres' £11m-per-year wage demands. They are also reportedly ready to pay £60m for the Swede, though Sporting may hold out for more. Juventus' pursuit of the striker may yet hinge on the future of Dusan Vlahovic. The Italian side are ready to get the Serbia striker's big wages off their books, and that could well make room for Gyokeres to take his place. ‌ Xhaka faces decision Former Arsenal captain Granit Xhaka needs to decide whether to stick or twist amid interest from AC Milan. The Swiss international is under contract with Bayer Leverkusen until 2028, but Gazzetta dello Sport indicates Milan are ready to offer him a Serie A opportunity. The Rossoneri are after midfield reinforcements after losing Tijjani Reijnders in early June. The Dutch midfielder, one of Milan's better performers last season, moved to Manchester City for an initial £46.6m. ‌ Xhaka, now 32, played just shy of 300 matches during his seven years at Arsenal. He won the Bundesliga title in his first Leverkusen season and followed it up with a runner-up finish last term, but has seen manager Xabi Alonso depart for Real Madrid. Williams learns what he'd make at Arsenal Nico Williams would earn around £7.7million per season if he moves to Arsenal, according to Sport. The Gunners are locked in a battle with Barcelona over the Spain international, who for now is still at boyhood club Athletic Bilbao. ‌ The same publication indicates that Williams would prefer a move to Barca if the club is committed to him. However, the Catalan club have also been linked with Liverpool's Luis Diaz as they pursue options on the left flank. Neither Barca nor Athletic is expected to be able to match Arsenal's offer, but Williams may yet accept a lower wage if it means linking up with La Liga's reigning champions. Bayern Munich could also move for Williams before the window shuts, as they look to stock up after losing Leroy Sane to Galatasaray.
