How much work goes into maintaining Prince Harry, Meghan Markle's $20m home?

Herald Sun14-05-2025
New details have emerged on how much Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are spending on maintenance for their swanky $US14.65 million ($A20.9 million) California mansion.
UK Home Improvement expert Justin Nielsen, from Wolf River Electric, estimates that the nine-bedroom pad will need around 10 to 15 staff members to keep it in tip top condition, The Sun reports.
He shared that this would include 'groundskeepers, horticulturists, pool technicians, and security personnel'.
The garden expert added: 'Given the array of features, including a swimming pool, tennis court, koi pond, children's playhouse, and chicken coop, the annual upkeep costs could easily reach between £150,000 ($A308,000) and £250,000 ($A514,000).
'This estimate accounts for landscaping, utilities, specialised care for the koi fish, and general maintenance.'
He added that staff would be required to work each month of the year, and said: 'The maintenance of this estate is not a seasonal endeavour but requires round-the-year attention.'
While Meghan and Harry often keep their home life private, they have given fans a sneak peek into their digs.

Playground for Archie and Lilibet
The royal couple's children, Archie and Lilibet, may not be growing up in a British palace, but their home sounds like a children's paradise.
The two youngsters have an incredible adventure playground outside, as well as a playhouse, and an indoor princess playroom.
The outdoor adventure area has slides, swings, a climbing frame, climbing wall, helter skelter (play equipment) and other fun obstacle courses.
And we've already seen a sneak peek at their garden playhouse, when the Sussexes shared a painting of them outside for their 2020 Christmas card.
The Sussex brood have five acres of land surrounding their Santa Barbara mansion, so it looks perfect for Lilibet and Archie to enjoy.
Chicken mansion
Meghan and Harry gave Oprah Winfrey the grand tour of their mansion and revealed they have rescue chickens from a factory farm.
The couple walked the talk show host to their coop – a home to rescued chickens.
In the video clip, an adorable red hen house dubbed 'Archie's Chick Inn' was also spotted.
Oprah said the chickens were saved from a nearby factory farm.
Koi fish pond
When the Duke and Duchess of Sussex splashed out $23 million on their Montecito home in 2020, they were informed there was a one drawback with the property.
The luxe residence came with some 'stressed' koi carp in the pond that needed professional care.
Writing about their home in his memoir 'Spare', Harry wrote: 'We found a place.
'Priced at a steep discount. Just up the coast, outside Santa Barbara.
'Lots of room, large gardens, a climbing frame — even a pond with koi carp.
'The koi were stressed, the estate agent warned.
'So are we. We'll all get along famously.
'No, the agent explained, the koi need very particular care.'
The Duke revealed he was informed that he would have to 'hire a koi guy' for the stressed fish, and he had inquired as to where to find a specialist.
He continued: 'The agent wasn't sure. We laughed. First-world problems.'
Vegetable patch
The couple are said to grow their own vegetables in their garden, and use the ingredients for their meals.
After Lilibet's birth, a friend told Closer: 'The couple has been relaxing at home since becoming proud parents of Lilibet.
'Harry is a devoted family man and has been helping out around the house.
'He picks vegetables from the garden to make fresh juices for Meghan and entertains Archie when she needs to rest up.
'He loves taking Archie to see the chickens or for a swim in the pool.'
Cute seating areas
When the couple weighed in on the US election when they filmed a special message to voters outside their home.
The pair were filmed sitting on a bench in the middle of a neatly trimmed patch of grass.
Either side of them, there were well maintained flower beds and a large tree – which would later feature in their pregnancy photo shoot – loomed behind.
The couple took out a massive $14.9 million mortgage on their lavish nine bedroom, 16 bathroom estate – which they are calling their 'sanctuary'.
It also boasts a theatre, arcade and guesthouse.

Oasis reunion 'could continue into 2026 with Knebworth gigs'

Oasis have been offered the chance to extend their comeback tour into 2026 with four blockbuster Knebworth shows. The Supersonic rockers have made a triumphant return to the stage this summer with the Oasis Live '25 Tour after brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher ended their long-running feud and the Britpop icons are weighing up the possibility of marking the 30th anniversary of their historic concerts at the Hertfordshire venue in 1996. However, those close to Oasis insist that no contracts have been signed and the group have not made any concrete plans for next year. A source told The Sun newspaper's Bizarre column: "They've seen the speculation, they've heard about the offers and they know what the fans want. "It's ultimately up for them to decide. The Oasis reunion hasn't just been concerts. You can see that it's been a cultural movement. Nothing comes close in recent history to Oasis's shows. "It's a question of whether Noel and Liam want to draw a line in the sand and close the door on this chapter, knowing they capture the zeitgeist. Or do they strike it up again and keep the magic going? It's a difficult decision to make." Oasis played two gigs at Edinburgh's Murrayfield Stadium at the weekend which saw Liam launch into an expletive-filled rant at council bosses in the Scottish capital after they described attendees at the concerts as "mainly middle-aged men who take up more room" and having a "medium to high intoxication" level during a safety briefing last year. The 52-year-old singer said: "One second, where do I start here with everyone at the city council? The f****** slags. '£1 billion pounds we're bringing to this city over the next three days. £1 billion. But you won't see any of it because the Lord Provost will be splitting it between (his) posh ugly f****** mates." He added: "We're still waiting [for] a f****** apology." The comments from the council about Oasis fans were revealed in documents obtained by The Sun through a Freedom of Information request. They also suggested there was concern performers could withdraw from the Edinburgh Festival Fringe due to "rowdy" fans of the Roll With It band heading to the venue. The documents reportedly warned: "There is concern about crowds as they are already rowdy and the tone of the band. Middle-aged men take up more room. Consider this when working out occupancy."

'Strictly intended for adults': King Charles III launches teddy bear version of himself - and you'll never believe how much it costs

King Charles III is now selling a teddy bear version of himself - aimed at mature-aged buyers only. On Monday, the 76-year-old monarch launched the HM King Charles III limited-edition teddy bear through his Highgrove House and Gardens gift shop, with a staggering price tag of £269 (AUD $554.57). Crafted in England by Merrythought, the makers behind the iconic Paddington Bear, the regal keepsake is fashioned from "the finest silver-coloured mohair plush combined with soft cotton velvet for a luxurious feel", according to the Highgrove website. Its left paw is embroidered in gold with the King's official Royal Cypher, marking its "exclusive royal connection". The bear also features deep blue eyes, a hand-stitched smile and what the shop describes as "a wise and regal expression that reflects the character of the reigning monarch". Dressed in the authentic Royal Victorian Order Sash, complete with Italian gold tassels, the bear also "proudly displays" a detailed enamel and gold-plated replica of the Order of the Garter star, the UK's oldest and most prestigious order of chivalry, worn by Charles during major royal events, including his 2023 coronation. "This limited-edition collectible teddy bear honours King Charles III's roles as monarch and as a dedicated serviceman of the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy," Highgrove House said. Only 1,948 bears will be made, each with its own Certificate of Authenticity and presented in a luxury gift box. The site warns the teddy is "strictly intended for adult collectors and is not a toy". The new royal toy could even rival the King's own lifelong attachment to a childhood teddy bear, which Prince Harry famously revealed in his 2023 bombshell memoir Spare. "Teddy went everywhere with Pa," Harry recalled, describing it as a "pitiful object" with broken arms, dangling threads and patched holes. "Teddy expressed eloquently, better than Pa ever could, the essential loneliness of his childhood." Royal biographer Christopher Andersen also claimed in The King: The Life of Charles III that His Majesty still travels with his childhood bear, which is cared for by trusted valet Michael Fawcett and repaired by his former nanny, Mabel Anderson. "Every time that teddy needed to be repaired, you would think it was his own child having major surgery," Fawcett reportedly said. But His Majesty isn't the only royal with a soft spot for plush toys- his younger brother, Prince Andrew, is said to own a collection of 72 teddy bears. Former palace maid Charlotte Briggs told The Sun in 2022 she underwent "a day's training" to learn how to position them on his bed. "It was so odd. After all, he was a grown man who had served in the Falklands," she said of the now disgraced Prince. "But he absolutely loved the teddies and was very clear about how he wanted them arranged." Though Charles' plush counterpart has a hefty price tag, buyers can rest assured that their purchase will contribute to a worthy cause, as the sale of all Highgrove products supports the charitable work of The King's Foundation. Founded by His Majesty in 1990, when he was the Prince of Wales, the King's Foundation aims to help young people explore the world of work, inspire veterans into entrepreneurship, and work on environmental projects- a cause close to Charles' heart.

'The response to their work speaks for itself': Prince Harry and Meghan Markle sign 'downgraded' deal with Netflix as streaming giant scales back $100m partnership

Netflix has signed a new multi-year agreement with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, but it comes on a smaller scale than their once-lucrative $100 million arrangement. The streaming giant confirmed on Monday that the couple's production company, Archewell Productions, had "extended its creative partnership with Netflix, with a multi-year, first-look deal for its film and television projects." The new deal marks a step back from their original five-year agreement, signed in 2020, which was reported to be worth $100 million (£75m). A source told The New York Times the updated contract is worth significantly less, signalling a loosening of ties. Meanwhile, public relations expert Mark Borkowski told The Telegraph the shift represented a "downgrade" and suggested Netflix was "pivoting away" from the Sussexes. In the press release, Meghan, 44, said she and Harry, 40, were "proud to extend our partnership with Netflix and expand our work together to include the As Ever brand". "My husband and I feel inspired by our partners who work closely with us and our Archewell Productions team to create thoughtful content across genres that resonates globally, and celebrates our shared vision," she said. Netflix's chief content officer, Bela Bajaria, praised the couple's impact: "Harry and Meghan are influential voices whose stories resonate with audiences everywhere. The response to their work speaks for itself- Harry & Meghan gave viewers an intimate look into their lives and quickly became one of our most-watched documentary series. "More recently, fans have been inspired by With Love, Meghan, with products from the new As Ever line consistently selling out in record time." Bajaria added that Netflix is "excited to continue our partnership with Archewell Productions and to entertain our members together". Under the revised "first look" arrangement, Netflix will have the first option on film and television projects developed by the Sussexes, rather than funding their entire output. Their upcoming projects include a short documentary, Masaka Kids: A Rhythm Within, which follows a group of Ugandan orphans whose joyful dance videos have become a global sensation, as well as a romance feature adaptation of the bestselling novel Meet Me at the Lake. In addition to the second season of With Love, Meghan, the streamer said the Duchess will host a "magical holiday" edition, promising to show viewers how to "deck the halls, create holiday feasts, craft heartfelt gifts and share lots of laughs". The Duchess' As Ever brand, launched with edible treats such as jam and sprinkles, has recently expanded to include Californian rosé wines and is tipped to move into hospitality and entertaining. Netflix said the brand "will continue expanding into new product categories with new items continuing to be released throughout the remainder of the year." Netflix confirmed Archewell Productions is "also in active development on additional projects" across various genres. Since its launch in 2020, Archewell has produced documentaries and reality programming, including Harry & Meghan, Live to Lead, Heart of Invictus, Polo and With Love, Meghan. The couple's debut series Harry & Meghan was a global hit, pulling 23.4 million views and becoming Netflix's fifth most popular documentary series of all time. But later offerings struggled to match that success, with Netflix's most recent viewing report showing With Love, Meghan failed to make the platform's top 300 shows. Nellie Andreeva, Deadline's co-editor-in-chief for TV, described the audience numbers as "very low for a Netflix original- and pretty unprecedented for a show that has been renewed."
