
New UPI rules from August 1: All you need to know
Beginning August 1, 2025, a new set of UPI rules will come into effect. These new rules will further enhance system performance and reduce fraud risks across the country.
In a circular issued on May 21, 2025, NPCI said: 'PSP banks and/or acquiring banks shall ensure all the API requests (in terms of velocity and TPS – transactions per second limitations) sent to UPI is monitored and moderated in terms of appropriate usage (customer-initiated and PSP system-initiated).'
With the objective of improving the performance of UPI, following changes will be implemented starting August 1:
Customers will be allowed to check their account balance through UPI apps up to a maximum of 50 times per app per day. This means each UPI app can be used up to 50 times in 24 hours for balance check.
This allows an user to request for the status of the transaction. Under the new rules, the user may initiate the transaction status after 45 to 60 seconds of the initiation/authentication of original transaction.
The users can execute UPI Autopay mandates such as electricity bills, water bills, OTT subscriptions, etc., only during non-peak hours. 'Peak hours are defined as the period during the day when UPI financial transactions reach the highest transactions per second, observed from 10:00 hours to 13:00 hours and from 17:00 hours to 21:30 hours. Any other time shall be referred as non-peak hour. During peak hours, UPI members are required to restrict non-customer-initiated APIs,' the NPCI said.
It allows users to find the link of accounts linked to their mobile by a particular account provider. Now, the customers can view their bank accounts only 25 times per app in 24 hours.

Metrowater cautions residents against fraudsters impersonating as officials
Chennai Metrowater has warned consumers against fraudsters impersonating as officials asking for payment of pending water, sewer tax and charges. This follows a recent increase in complaints regarding such scams. In a press release, the water agency has cautioned consumers against fraudsters tricking them as Metrowater employees, instructing them to remit outstanding water, sewer tax and charges via mobile number linked to private bank account through UPI services. They also threaten to disconnect services if payment is not made. The water agency has asked residents to be vigilant of such calls from unauthorised persons. Residents may remit payment through its official website, or in collection centres located in all 15 area offices and head office. They may also use the iPoS machines carried by Metrowater depot managers to pay the bills. For UPI transactions, consumers may navigate to the utilities category under the bill payment option and choose CMWSSB for tax and charges payment. Residents contact the helpline 044-45674567 for any clarifications about pending tax and charges, the release said.

Post offices across the country to accept digital payments soon
Even as India Post phases out its 'Registered Post' and merges it with Speed Post, the Department of Posts has indicated that it will firm up its logistics for transmitting mail, and upgrade its IT systems. A key initiative has been integrating Unified Payments Interface (UPI) at the time of booking Speed Post, which would prevent individual post offices from declining digital payments. One way in which India Post has said it would firm up its domestic mail transmission is by ensuring that mail bags have enough room on flights criss-crossing India. The Hindu had first reported on July 9 India Post's intention to reserve such 'hard blocks' on passenger flights' spare room in the cargo hold. On July 17, the postal department issued the tender to this effect, inviting airlines to bid for these hard block contracts. Post offices across the country have also been upgrading their IT system in phases. Apart from accepting UPI in a so-called 'collect mechanism', where a mail article is booked as soon as a UPI request is paid, the new system also includes more fields in tracking, such as the next post office a particular package or letter is headed to while in transmission. This new Advanced Postal Technology (APT) system has been rolled out in some of the major metro cities, such as Delhi and Chennai. Large parts of Mumbai will transition on August 4, the posts department said. In Delhi, over a dozen post offices were upgraded last month, and over 400 post offices did not accept bookings on Saturday as they also undertook the upgrades. Over 86,000 post offices have been upgraded to the new systems so far, representing over half the postal network in India. 'The APT application is designed to offer an enhanced user experience, faster service delivery, and a more customer-friendly interface, reflecting our unwavering commitment to delivering smarter, efficient, and future-ready postal operations,' the Ministry of Communications said in a statement. Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, the Minister of State for Communications, reviewed some of the upgradation work earlier this week, where postal officials said that APT was 'designed to introduce real-time track and trace capabilities, customised services for bulk customers, electronic proof of delivery, OTP-based authentication, digital payments, and open API integration,' according to another statement. Post department officials have also touted other upgrades to come in the following months. Two officials told The Hindu that the department was working on an email-like system that would allow letters to be redirected seamlessly when addressees shift their residence. The DIGIPIN initiative, which allows for more precise latitude-longitude data in a PIN code, has also been launched this year.

There are several key drivers behind India's economic strength, supported by compelling data points and emerging opportunities that underscore its enduring momentum. An honest perusal of these key parameters will exorcise the farcical claim by India's Leader of Opposition (LoP) that the Indian economy is dead. What will emerge is a picture to the GDP Growth and Global StandingIndia's GDP growth has consistently outpaced that of other major economies, cementing its status as a global economic leader. In FY24, India's real GDP grew by an impressive 8.2%, surpassing the growth rates of major economies like the United States (2.5%), China (5.2%), Japan (1.9%), and Germany (0.3%). For FY25, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) projects India's growth at 6.5–7%, revised upward from 6.6% due to strong rural demand and government infrastructure spending. The Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) steady interest rate policy and potential rate cuts of 25 basis points in FY25 further support growth by encouraging credit and to advanced economies grappling with high inflation—such as the U.S. (3.0% in mid-2023) and the Eurozone (5.3%)—India's low inflation rate provides a competitive edge, fostering consumer confidence and sustaining domestic demand []. This stability is crucial for long-term economic resilience, especially in a global environment marked by inflationary FDI Inflows: A Vote of Global ConfidenceForeign Direct Investment (FDI) inflows into India have surged, reflecting global confidence in its economic potential. Between April 2000 and December 2024, cumulative FDI equity inflows reached $1.05 trillion, with $71 billion recorded in FY24 alone. Key sectors like finance, banking, insurance, and R&D have been major recipients, with Maharashtra (31%) and Karnataka (21%) emerging as top destinations. Singapore, Mauritius, and the U.S. account for significant shares, with 25%, 24%, and 10% of inflows, liberalised FDI regime, allowing 100% foreign investment in sectors like construction and renewable energy, has been a game-changer. The rise of Indian unicorns—108 by mid-2023, with 44 achieving unicorn status in 2021—has further attracted global investors. With 17.8% of the global population and a growing working-age cohort, India is set to overtake China's working-age population share by 2030. This demographic advantage fuels consumption and the Digital Transformation front, initiatives like IndiaStack and Aadhaar have digitised financial transactions, with the credit-to-GDP ratio expected to rise from 57% to 100% by 2031. This enhances financial inclusion and economic it comes to infrastructure push, the Modi government's record-breaking Rs. 11 lac crore capital expenditure in the last two successive financial years has driven projects like the Bharat Expressway and Sagarmala 2.0, improving connectivity and banking sector has shown remarkable stability, driven by reforms. Gross non-performing assets (NPAs) fell to a 12-year low of 2.6% in FY24, reflecting a robust financial and the Path ForwardDespite its strengths, India faces challenges, including a skills gap and a manufacturing sector that needs to further scale up. Structural reforms, such as those in agriculture and labour, are critical to sustaining high growth. The government's National Manufacturing Mission and focus on skill development aim to address these gaps, but consistent implementation is economy today is stronger and more resilient than ever, driven by robust GDP growth, a thriving manufacturing sector, low inflation, high FDI inflows, and burgeoning opportunities in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. Emerging sectors like renewable energy and space technology, combined with a favourable demographic and digital transformation, position India as a global economic leader. As it navigates challenges with strategic reforms, India's trajectory toward becoming the world's third-largest economy by 2027 is not just a possibility but an inevitability.
