SFA draft in pilots to speak to referees in bid to improve VAR use
Collum felt the presentation at Oriam at the weekend was an invaluable exercise and is optimistic that Scottish referees, who have been working with SFA VAR manager and former FA Cup final referee Martin Atkinson since last October, will be more effective during the 2025/26 campaign.

'We have had aviation experts in, pilots,' he said. 'They showed us good examples of critical situations, of life and death situations. People think football is life and death, but it is not quite the same. But it is an intense environment and we wanted to know how people communicate there.
'Sometimes the VARs are speaking and they are not really asking the right open question. They could be leading the AVAR. But the pilot is not asking the co-pilot questions that he is just going to agree with. You actually see some examples where they physically sit back. There was lots about communication.
'Another key thing was that nobody in a cockpit uses the words 'I think'. It needs to be concrete, it needs to be, 'Here is what it is actually showing, here is what the outcome is'. Rather than saying it is something that I am thinking, we need it to be more factual.'
Collum continued, 'In England, there was a couple of high-profile decisions which there was a negative reaction to. There was a lot of debate about the communication after a Spurs game against Liverpool. England were the first to say, 'We need to have a real serious think about what is being said in the room'.
'It can't just be a run-of-the-mill conversation, we need to be able to use the right phrases, we need to have the right processes'. What we are finding through aviation, is that you need robust processes. We definitely think that in England you can see evidence of that.
(Image: Paul Devlin - SNS Group) 'In the short time that Martin has been in position, we are already seeing better evidence of that. If you had gone into the VAR room before Martin came in and talked about communication, it would have been really busy with people talking, saying too much.
'Now, if you go in you would think, 'Something is not working right here because I am not hearing anything'. But it is about speaking when you need to speak so that it is relevant. We also know that talking, talking, talking can make people tired. So we don't want our VARs and AVARs being tired.'
Collum revealed that the country's Class 1 referees were played footage of pilots communicating with each other after a plane engine had caught fire in mid-air during the get-together at Hampden.
'We saw examples of that yesterday,' he said. 'Nobody can deny that the pilots adrenalin is pumping and they are fearing, they're frightened, they're worried.
'It is about keeping calm because you have got a process and you know to follow that process. We want the same. When there are critical, difficult decisions for the VAR to make they have a process there.'

Collum continued, 'The pilots also analysed a lot of our clips and said from a technical point of view they didn't know what the right or the wrong decision was. But what they did say was, 'Could there have been less talk? Could there have been a different approach? Could there have been a more open-ended question to the AVAR?'
'They see a lot of similarities between what is happening in the VAR room and the cockpit. Again it is not life and death, but in football, maybe even in the west of Scotland, it is up there.'
Asked if he had any intention of tapping into any other industries going forward in an attempt to improve the use of VAR and the standard of officiating in Scotland, Collum said, 'Martin has come from a police background. We don't want to go way out there and way wide, but any industry that can help us we would be keen to use it. I think a few guys were put off flying yesterday, but it was a good exercise.'
Former FIFA Elite Referee Collum replaced Crawford Allan as the head of refereeing at the SFA last year and has had to contend with criticism from clubs, managers, players and supporters about mistakes which his officials have made in big matches during his first year in his new role.
However, he stressed that he and his staff at the governing body are working tirelessly to get major calls right and insisted he had positive relationships with numerous major stakeholders throughout the Scottish game.
(Image: Rob Casey - SNS Group) 'I deal with the technical people at clubs, the playing staff,' he said. 'I am building my relationships with the players and I think we need even more contact with them.
'We are working hand in hand with the PFA for the time ever in Scotland. We had a meeting with the PFA Scotland chairman Michael Devlin yesterday.
'We've got nothing to hide. We want to show people what we are about and the coaching we are delivering. I've always said to any club they can pick up the phone any time or come here and watch any clip with us and we'll talk them through it. I don't control what the clubs decide to do.
'But on my part the door is always open. I welcome them coming and engaging with us. I would prefer that than anything that goes public, but at the end of the day I don't control the clubs or what actions they take. But I am confident I have built up good relations with every club and every coach in the country.
'We can learn from each other. I don't want anyone thinking that the only time managers will engage with me is after bad decisions. I have very good relationships where I feel we are learning from what they are saying to us as well, including the players. I know I have played my part with the door being wide open.'

Scots wrestler who lived in his car with his dog now a rising ring star in USA
Meet the former Motherwell carer, Luke Scouler, turned wrestling star taking America by storm. A former Scots carer who once lived in his car with his dog is now making waves across the Atlantic as one of the rising stars in American wrestling. Luke Scouler, 33, from Motherwell, better known by fans as Crixus, and he's quickly become one of the breakout stars of Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW) — the same promotion that launched WWE legends like John Cena and Batista. Nicknamed the Scottish War Machine, Luke's journey has taken him from sleeping in a gym car park to headline matches in the US, including casket matches and cage fights. He made history as OVW's first-ever Scottish champion, and now appears regularly in the cult promotion recently featured in the hit Netflix documentary Wrestlers. Before the body slams and bright lights, Luke had worked as a fitness instructor and in residential care for young people at Inspire Scotland. 'I really loved that job. But it was tough emotionally,' Luke said. 'I've always had a bit of a Batman complex - I thought I was going to save everybody. 'I was in a bad place with it. I knew it wasn't for me and I was burned out. I was in a bad place and I remember sitting in my house in Newmains watching TV with my dog, Odin, when wrestling came on and I just thought: 'Screw it. Let's go.' Scots have made it big in this business – why couldn't I?' That same night, he packed up his car, grabbed his dog, and drove through the night to enroll at a wrestling academy in London run by former WWE star Al Snow , who is now OVW's head trainer. 'I drove through the night with no plan and no place to stay. Me and the dog slept in the car for a bit,' Luke recalled. 'Eventually the guy who ran it asked if I was serious. I told him I'd already quit my job and left my house. That was it. We moved into the gym and didn't go back.' After topping a 300-person wrestling combine in 2019, Luke earned a coveted spot at OVW. But his momentum was stalled when the pandemic hit, forcing him back to the UK for two years. Now, fully based in Kentucky, he's cementing himself as one of the promotion's leading names. You're battle-ready by the time you leave primary school, so wrestling comes naturally to us,' Luke said. 'I'm a smartass cheeky b******, and the accent helps too. Over here in the States, people already think we're mental which helps. I just turned my personality up to 11. I wasn't pretending to be someone else — just the version of me you probably wouldn't want to sit next to in a pub. I get to act like an a**** and they still love me. They boo you, but they're cheering underneath.' His rise comes during what insiders are calling a golden period for Scots in pro wrestling. Joe Hendry , from Edinburgh, appeared at WrestleMania this year, while Drew McIntyre , from Ayrshire and also an OVW alumnus, became Scotland's first WWE Champion in 2020. OVW head coach Al Snow, himself a former WWE European and Hardcore Champion, believes Luke could be next. 'With the success of Joe Hendry and Drew McIntyre, Scotland is increasingly a potential source of talent. ICW did amazing things. I know Grado — though don't tell him I said this — but he's incredibly charismatic and doing so well across TV, radio and stage,' Snow said. 'With Crixus, we may have another superstar on our hands. His dedication has been incredible. To make it in this business, you have to sacrifice and do things out of the ordinary. And that's why I think he's got what it takes.'

Jack Butland sparks frenzied Rangers fans guessing game with 'pull your finger out' accusation
The experienced voice in the Ibrox dressing room pulled no punches in a club TV interview Russell Martin didn't miss his Rangers players in a furious post match interview following the opening day Premiership draw with Motherwell. The Ibrox boss warned he will weed out the slackers in the dressing room as he accused some of 'jogging around' Fir Park and claimed there's too many egos in the squad. And veteran goalkeeper Jack Butland echoed his manager's comments after conducting a club TV interview pitchside at Fir Park where he pulled no punches. Butland is convinced the style Martin is trying to implement will work if players buy into it but he warned that 'people need to pull their finger out'. He added: 'Us as a squad need to set that and push people but if anyone didn't understand what this club is about then the response at the end (boos from fans) is everything you need to know about what's expected of you.' And it was his 'people need to pull their finger out' comment that has set fans - already trying to guess who the egos and joggers were from Martin's interview - off on social media. Substitute Cyriel Dessers was absolved of any blame by Martin but responding to Butland's interview, one fan asked: 'People need to pull their finger out. Who's this really aimed at?' And that sparked a flood of responses. The first said: 'Danilo and (Nedim) Bajrami.' Another added: '(Mohamed) Diomande, (Kieran) Dowell, Danilo, Bajrami and (Connor) Barron?' One simply said: 'The new guys.' Butland was asked if it was the job of the rest of the squad to hammer home the demands of Rangers to the new guys but he said: 'Everyone has been made aware of exactly what's required before this so it's not a shock to people but we have to be better than we were today. 'You've got to learn quick. There's no time to waste. In my time here we haven't got off to a good start. It's not where you want to be but you have to learn quick, simple as that. 'You've got to be strong enough to deal with it and get on with it. It's a cliche of going again on Tuesday but that's the reality, and we've got to win and keep winning games in the league and make sure we're winning more than anybody else. 'I won't insult the fans with words we all know and don't want to hear. I'll just echo what's been said inside - what I said - there's a minimum requirement. 'The way the manager wants to play works - can work - but it needs everyone's buy-in. We didn't do that today. We weren't at it enough and that's a minimum requirement of any football team if you want to be successful, which I believe we can be, then it requires more that today. 'It wasn't good enough, we got what we deserved. Like when anything is difficult you've got to stand up and get your chest out and get on with it and we need to start winning games and doing it in a convincing fashion, with real performances and effort. 'It didn't feel like we were quite where we needed to be today and that is the reality of it. There's no point sugar coating it. I'm rambling on a bit but we don't want to be having these conversations. 'We've done them before, we need to be optimistic and look forward but we need to be better than we were today - and if we do that we'll be fine, but we need to be better. 'To say this is got to be a lesson and all that stuff is irrelevant. It's too late for that, we need to be at it all the time and if anyone didn't know, now they do. 'You need to do what's being asked of you first and foremost. You can see it, I believe in it, I've seen it work and know it works but it needs the buy-in from everyone and everyone to be at it 110 per cent on and off the ball which is where we fell short. 'We weren't doing what was asked and a team that's trying lots of new things themselves had more opportunities to perhaps even win the game and that's not where we want to be. 'I won't sugarcoat it. The fans don't want to hear that and we have to put it right and that's the focus now.'
