"Nothing but crocodile tears": Tamil Nadu CM slams centre for skewed funding favouring Sanskrit over classical languages
Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], June 24 (ANI): A political row has erupted after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin alleged biased allocation of central funds favouring Sanskrit over other Indian classical languages, including Tamil.
Citing a media report and voicing strong criticism on social media platform X, the Chief Minister wrote, 'Sanskrit gets the crores; Tamil and other South Indian languages get nothing but crocodile tears.'
The criticism follows a media report that quoted the reply to an RTI query, which said that the Union Government allocated Rs 2,532.59 crore between 2014-15 and 2024-25 for the promotion of Sanskrit.
In contrast, a total of only Rs 147.56 crore was spent on all five other classical Indian languages combined--Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Odia--over the same period, claimed the report.
MH Jawahirullah, the president of Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK), alleged that the funding disparity revealed a discriminatory and biased approach by the BJP-led Union Government and called for urgent corrective measures.
He said, 'This amount is 17 times higher than the total funding of 147.56 crore allocated for all five other classical languages combined, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Odia, according to data obtained through an RTI query, as reported by an English daily. On average, Sanskrit has received 230.24 crore per year, whereas the other five classical languages have received only 13.41 crore per year on average, revealing the Union BJP government's discriminatory and biased approach.'
He urged the Centre to provide equitable funding and fair recognition for Tamil and other classical languages.
'Recently, Union Home Minister Mr. Amit Shah stated in Madurai that Tamil is the 'best language in India'. But these statistics expose that such remarks are mere lip service without substance. I urge the Union Government to immediately provide due recognition, equitable funding, and developmental programs for Tamil and all other classical languages,' he said. (ANI)

New Delhi, June 24 (UNI) Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate on Tuesday slammed the Narendra Modi government over the recently issued "US travel advisory" that warns American citizens, especially women, against travelling alone in India, citing incidents of rape, violence and the potential for terror attacks. 'It is deeply ironic and damaging that such an advisory has been issued for India, a nation striving for global leadership. This has far-reaching implications on our international standing,' Ms Shrinate said while addressing a press conference here. 'Pakistan's Army Chief Asim Munir is being invited to a dinner to enjoy a meal with US President Donald Trump, who has, in turn, hyphenated India and Pakistan. It is highly objectionable that the Indian PM and Pakistan's Army Chief are being hyphenated together,' she claimed. Ms Shrinate further alleged, 'In the last 11 years, PM Modi has spent a disproportionate amount of time courting foreign powers from enforceable hugs to events like 'Howdy Modi', 'Namaste Trump', and slogans like 'Ab Ki Baar Trump Sarkar'. Yet, the results are embarrassing'. Shrinate claimed that the United States, under Trump's leadership, had repeatedly disrespected India by imposing tariffs, accusing India of trade abuse, taking credit for ceasefires, deporting Indian nationals in handcuffs, and now issuing adverse advisories. 'At a time when we need large nations of the world to stand with us, America is issuing travel advisories against us and citing incidents that pertain to the rest of the world. But this really maligns us, and what is the government doing about it? Absolutely nothing. Pindrop silence like always,' she said. Questioning the very direction of India's foreign policy, she said, 'The cornerstone of our foreign policy should be to uphold India's national interest. But for Modi, it seems to be more about getting the perfect camera angle wherever he goes.' She also took a dig at External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, saying, 'Our foreign minister appears more interested in making dramatic social media reels than addressing serious diplomatic issues. 400 Bengali migrant labourers tagged as Bangladeshis, being held in Rajasthan: Mamata Banerjee
KOLKATA: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday said that the Bengali-speaking people from the state were being tagged as illegal Bangladeshi immigrants and rounded up by the police in some Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled states. (ANI) 'We have received information that 300-400 people from Itahar (in north Bengal's Cooch Behar district bordering Bangladesh) have been rounded up and forcibly held inside a house in Rajasthan. They were branded as Bangladeshis because they speak Bengali although they showed their Indian identity documents,' Banerjee told reporters at the state assembly complex. 'I will bring this to the notice of the Prime Minister. People who speak Bengali are being illegally pushed back to Bangladesh by BJP-ruled states,' the Trinamool Congress (TMC) chairperson said. The chief minister alleged that bona fide citizens of West Bengal are being selectively contested in BJP-ruled states. She said: 'Anybody who came from Bangladesh after March 1971 (when the nation was born) is a bonafide Indian citizen. If speaking Bengali is a crime then let the Centre ban the language that (Rabindranath) Tagore and Subhas Chandra Bose spoke. We have 15 million migrant workers in Bengal. People from other states work here as well. Is that a crime? Similar incidents have happened in Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Maharashtra.' Mosaraf Hussen, the TMC legislator from Itahar, alleged that those allegedly held by the Rajasthan administration are kept in a house named Ambedkar Bhawan at Bhiwadi city, which was part of the National Capital Region (NCR). Hussen said he brought the matter to the notice of the chief minister on Tuesday. 'A man from Itahar somehow managed to call me from Rajasthan and informed me that these men are being forcibly held inside a house named Ambedkar Bhawan. They were not allowed to contact the police. I sought the chief minister's intervention,' Hussen said. The allegation was levelled days after the West Bengal police helped a migrant worker and his wife return home after they were declared illegal Bangladeshi immigrants by Maharashtra police and deported to the neighbouring country by the Border Security Force (BSF). Fazal Mondal and his wife Taslima, who are residents of North 24 Parganas district, were arrested on June 10 from the Naya Nagar area in Mumbai and deported to Bangladesh on June 14, the family told the media. The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) returned them on June 16. On June 15, three migrant workers from Murshidabad district and two from East Burdwan district managed to return to India. These men were held by Mumbai police on June 12 and the BSF deported them on June 14. They, too, claimed that they were arrested despite showing documents such as Aadhaar and PAN cards. BSF has not commented on these incidents or responded to emails sent by HT in this connection.\ Samik Bhattacharya, chief spokesperson of the Bengal BJP unit, said action was being taken against illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in non-BJP ruled states too. 'Such arrests are being made in Tamil Nadu as well although it is not a BJP-ruled state. The identity documents carried by a section of Muslim, Bengali-speaking migrant workers have been found to be fake in all the states where the administrations have cracked down on illegal immigrants. I informed several Bengal ministers about this,' Bhattacharya said. 'Secondly, by making these allegations, Mamata Banerjee and her party are spreading hatred against people from other Indian states, especially those who speak Hindi. Many migrant workers from these states have told us that they are being stigmatised,' he added.

The upcoming Nashik Simhastha Kumbh Mela 2027 will witness a significant traditional change, as the age-old practice of 'Shahi Snan' will be replaced with 'Amrit Snan' The preparations for the 2027 Nashik Kumbh Mela have begun. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis recently said that Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has approved the requirement of eight new roads, including the Ring Road and the road to Trimbakeshwar. THE NEW ROADS Fadnavis said, 'I had written to the Prime Minister for the preparation of the national highway network for the Mahakumbh in Nashik and Trimbakeshwar 2027. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari held a meeting regarding this in Nagpur. We demanded eight-nine new roads, which were approved today including Ring Road and road to Trimbakeshwar. He has also approved the repairing and widening all six roads leading to Nashik." Maharashtra minister Girish Mahajan said that Rs 3,700 crore had been approved for infrastructure development ahead of the Nashik Kumbh Mela. Mahajan said, 'We held a meeting for the Kumbh Mela preparations with the Gadkari and Fadnavis. We are expecting a three-four-fold rise in the footfall compared to 12 years ago…We need to plan big. We have to expand the national highways. Around Rs 3,700 crore will be spent on this, and in two-threemonths, the work will also start and the road leading to Nashik and Trimbakeshwar will be widened." 'The Kumbh Mela is held at four locations across the country Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik and it takes place based on where the drops of Amrit fell. The term Shahi Snan was introduced during the Mughal era. Therefore, this tradition is now being changed, and the Shahi Snan will henceforth be referred to as Amrit Snan. This decision was taken after discussions during a meeting between all 13 Akharas and the Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in Nashik," Mahant Bhakti Charan Das, spokesperson of All India Vaishnav Akhara.
