Gary Payton Questions Luka Doncic's Willingness To Become A Defensive Player originally appeared on Fadeaway World.
Hall of Famer and 1996 Defensive Player of the Year Gary Payton has weighed in on the lingering question that continues to follow Luka Doncic: Will he ever become a competent defender?

During a candid conversation at the BUDX NBA House event in Mumbai, Payton, renowned for his elite perimeter defense and relentless tenacity, didn't mince words. He didn't question Doncic's talent, he questioned his will.
"Like I said, basketball is different than when I played because I could put my hands on them and I could hand check. We'll talk about Luka. You have to be dedicated to play defense. You have to be dedicated. Maybe that's not for him."
"He's a scorer. He can do it. Now, if he gets his mind to it, I tell every kid that I go and do camps with, I say there's a mindset to play defense. Not just say you want to play defense. You can't do that unless you have a mindset to do that."
"You have to have great hands and feet to do that. You have to be able to move. You have to be willing to take sacrifices to do things. And that's just the way it goes. I don't think Luka is a defensive player. I think he's a scorer. He's not one of that. But now, if he wants to, yes, he can get his mind to it to do it. But does he want to do it?"

"That's left up to him. That's not left up to us. He's an athlete. He's got great ability. Now, if he wants to go and change it and prove people wrong that he can't play defense, if that was me, I would change it."
"I would say, yeah, I'm going to go out there and I'm going to try to defend somebody. And I'm going to get in shape. I'm going to do the things that I need to do. And I'm going to do that."
This statement cuts to the heart of one of the biggest critiques of Luka Doncic. Offensively, there's no doubt he's a generational savant, a wizard with the ball, capable of scoring and facilitating at historic levels. But defensively, he's often compared to a traffic cone.
In the 2025 Western Conference first-round matchup against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Doncic was repeatedly exposed in one-on-one matchups. Anthony Edwards and Mike Conley blew past him with ease, and clips of Luka conceding straight-line drives went viral.

Paul Pierce openly criticized Doncic on national television after the series, declaring that he has to learn how to play defense. Kendrick Perkins was even more direct, calling Doncic 'the worst defensive star in modern basketball.'
And those criticisms had real-world consequences, they played a role in the Dallas Mavericks' shocking trade that sent Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis.
Mavs GM Nico Harrison defended the move by saying, 'Defense wins championships,' subtly implying that Doncic's limitations on that end were incompatible with their championship goals. Harrison believed Davis, despite being older and more injury-prone, gave Dallas the elite defensive anchor they lacked with Luka.
The Boston Celtics also schemed Doncic into oblivion during the 2024 NBA Finals, targeting him relentlessly in pick-and-roll actions. The results were brutal: open looks, exposed rotations, and layups, all courtesy of Luka's sluggish foot speed and delayed reactions.

However, there are signs that Doncic is finally taking the criticism seriously. This offseason, photos surfaced of a slimmed-down Luka, reportedly after undergoing a modified diet and focused indoor training regimen.
Now with the Lakers, he seems more determined than ever to shed the perception that he's a one-way player. Sources close to the team say his conditioning has vastly improved, and his attention to detail during film sessions has been sharper than in years past.
Whether that transformation translates to better defensive results on the court remains to be seen. But as Gary Payton emphasized, defense isn't about talent, it's about choice.
Doncic has all the tools to become a passable, even respectable defender. But only time will tell if the new-look Lakers star finally develops the mindset required to back it up.

Kevin Durant Trade Rumors Given Shocking Prediction

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The NBA offseason is just a few weeks away from fully commencing, and this summer is expected to be a wild one. There have already been multiple star players named in potential trade rumors, with many teams likely to be very active. More NBA news: Top 5 Landing Spots For Kevin Durant Amid Trade Rumors One name that has been circling around trade rumors is Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant. After another disappointing year in Phoenix, many around the NBA expect Durant to be traded this offseason. The Suns almost moved Durant at the trade deadline this past year, giving more thought to a potential deal going down. While there have been multiple teams heavily linked to Durant already, longtime NBA analyst Bill Simmons believes he has the answers. Simmons has predicted that the Suns and San Antonio Spurs have agreed upon a deal for Durant already. But due to the NBA Finals going on, the two sides are waiting to announce the terms of the deal. "I wouldn't be surprised if KD to the Spurs is done already and they just haven't announced it. Basically, they've agreed on specifics, just announce it on the week of the draft. This goes back to the Giannis thing. I think they trade for KD because it just costs less. They'll be able to be real competitive and maybe go a couple of rounds in the playoffs, but they're also going to keep the No. 2 pick and do it that way, which is my prediction.", Simmons said. Durant and the Suns have been on a losing streak. More Photo byIf Durant does land in San Antonio, it would give the Spurs a legitimate three-headed monster. With star center Victor Wembanyama and guard De'Aaron Fox in the mix, San Antonio could be a lethal team in the Western Conference next season. More NBA news: Kevin Durant Future Reportedly Tied to Giannis Antetokounmpo Even at his advanced age, Durant is still one of the better scorers in the NBA. Durant averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 1.2 blocks per game this past season. Adding him to the team would instantly vault the Spurs into title contenders in an already loaded West. But Durant likely wants to play for a contender, and the opportunity to team up with Wembanyama may be too much to pass on. It remains to be seen how the Durant trade speculation goes, but his time with the Suns seems to be coming to an end. Durant will likely be on a new team next year as he tries to get another title under his belt before he retires. Draymond Green Did Not Mince Words on Chicago Sky's Blowout Loss to Fever

Draymond Green Did Not Mince Words on Chicago Sky's Blowout Loss to Fever originally appeared on Athlon Sports. With the season already over for the Golden State Warriors, former Defensive Player of the Year Draymond Green has had more time on his hands. Advertisement As it turns out, the four-time All-Star has been following the WNBA, and Green caught some of the action on Saturday night. The four-time NBA champ, however, was not delighted with what he saw, particularly from the Chicago Sky. Angel Reese and Co. got themselves utterly humiliated again on Saturday as they suffered a 79-52 home loss to their biggest rivals, the Indiana Fever, who did not have the services of the injured Caitlin Clark. Green took to social media to share his brutally honest thoughts on the Sky's performance. "The Sky play a very bad brand of basketball," Green posted on Threads. Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese (5) reacts to an official during the first half against the Dallas Wings. Mandatory Credit: Chris Jones-Imagn Images Green is not the type to mince words, and he's made his opinion of Chicago extremely clear here. Advertisement As the NBA veteran said, it was a deplorable all-around performance from the Sky on Saturday night. On the offensive end, not even a single Chicago player was able to score in double figures as they collectively shot 32.1% as a team. The Sky didn't fare too well on the defense as well, with players such as Kelsey Mitchell (17 points, five rebounds) pretty much having their way against Chicago throughout the evening. Green is clearly unimpressed by the Sky's "brand of basketball," and after seeing their performance in this highly anticipated clash against the Fever, it's hard to argue against the Warriors star. Knicks head coach search: Is Jason Kidd Plan A? What we know

About a week has passed since the Knicks fired Tom Thibodeau — the franchise's winningest coach this century – on the heels of New York making the Eastern Conference finals for the first time in 25 years. So far, everything about the franchise's search for a new coach seems … odd. The Knicks have interest in Jason Kidd, per league sources. The problem? Kidd, the coach of the Dallas Mavericks, has two years left on his contract. The Knicks, while they might be preparing to ask for permission to interview Kidd for their vacancy, have not yet made a formal request. There has yet to be any contact as of Monday morning, per a Mavericks team source. And yet, when that time comes, per multiple league sources, the expectation is that the Mavericks will deny that request. Advertisement This brings us to this question: Did the Knicks fire Thibodeau without a no-hiccups successor in place? A week into the search, it certainly feels that way. New York is expected to do an exhaustive search that includes coaches at every level, per league sources. However, the expectation for this franchise is to win a championship. Whoever is hired has to carry the weight of that. The Knicks decided to move on from Thibodeau — a decision that The Athletic reported after the Knicks' season ended was in the hands of owner James Dolan — during a coaching cycle that isn't overflowing with heavily experienced, successful head coaches. Former Denver Nuggets head coach Michael Malone, a champion, is the biggest name on the market with championship experience. Malone, like Thibodeau, is a very good coach, but he shares many tendencies and traits with Thibodeau. Former Sacramento Kings head coach Mike Brown is an experienced name out there, as well. Former Memphis Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins is, too. Ex-Los Angeles Lakers Lakers head coach Darvin Ham and former Charlotte Hornets head coach James Borrego could also be of interest. They are all good coaches and have had various degrees of success, though only Malone has won a championship as a head coach among that group. Would any of those names be clear-cut upgrades over Thibodeau? Not on paper, at least. That the Knicks fired Thibodeau and are currently juggling the idea of trying to pry away currently employed head coaches suggests that Thibodeau's firing might have been made without a sure-fire successor in mind. With that said, maybe the Knicks' decision-makers really believe Kidd is attainable. The Mavericks head coach has connections to several members of the Knicks organization, including star guard Jalen Brunson and Knicks vice president of sports medicine Casey Smith. Furthermore, Kidd didn't always enjoy being Dallas' spokesperson in the aftermath of the franchise trading Luka Dončić, per league sources. In a Feb. 10 game against the Kings, Mavericks center Daniel Gafford got hurt. In the middle of the injury crisis, multiple fans were also ejected for protesting the Dončić trade. Kidd didn't address the media afterward. Advertisement 'I just needed a break,' Kidd explained Feb. 12 — two days later. In New York, Kidd would continue to be the spokesperson. President Leon Rose hasn't fielded questions from independent media in several years. If Dallas were to deny the Knicks' request, and Kidd would prefer to coach elsewhere, could he put up enough of a stink behind the scenes to make the organization's decision-makers change their mind? It feels like the Knicks are banking on that. Even then, the Mavericks almost certainly would want draft compensation to facilitate such a rare move. New York, which depleted most of its draft capital over the last calendar year, would have to consider that as it moved forward in the process. (Kidd was previously involved in a coaching trade. In 2014, the Milwaukee Bucks acquired his coaching rights from the Brooklyn Nets for two second-round picks.) Lastly, maybe there is an expectation that owners get involved to work something out. They've proved they can work together in other settings. Dolan's Sphere in Las Vegas is on property owned by Mavericks owner Miriam Adelson. A lot of moving parts would have to work in the Knicks' favor in order to make Jason Kidd their next head coach. There's nothing wrong with targeting an employed head coach for their vacant position. Due diligence is good. It just seems a little odd that it appears to be Plan A. The Knicks have backed themselves into a corner between the firing of Thibodeau and this upcoming hire. They've made it clear that what the winningest coach in recent franchise history did wasn't good enough to reach their ultimate goal of a championship. It'll be tough for New York's suits to win the headlines and backpages with the next head coach, unless they have something up their sleeves, which is totally possible. Until the big reveal, though, the Knicks appear to be in limbo. No available coach is an obvious upgrade or change of pace from Thibodeau. Getting a proven coach from another team seems far-fetched. Hiring an inexperienced or first-year head coach, while it might end up being the right decision a year from now, is a difficult sell to fans who now have heightened expectations after several successful seasons and based on the franchise's own language following the firing of Thibodeau. New York just has to get this right. Maybe it will. Right now, though, this all feels lackluster. Christian Clark and Fred Katz contributed reporting.
