Turf wars loom in KwaMbonambi

Infighting among high school pupils in KwaMbonambi has the potential to escalate into turf wars if not promptly addressed by the relevant authorities.
This warning was issued by Ward 16 Councillor Bhekumuzi Sithole, who said this longstanding infighting has recently intensified, with learners resorting to carrying dangerous weapons, including knives and broken bottles.

According to Sithole, an underlying sinister influence of drugs appears to be involved in the situation.
'People are using these learners. We have held numerous meetings with parents and there are no tangible reasons for what it is that is being fought over,' said Sithole.
He further added that there was a pressing need to involve social workers in addressing the violent acts among the learners.
Among the schools involved in these conflicts are Ntongande High School in Ward 16, Mkhayideni Technical High School in Ward 14 of uMfolozi, and Siphumelele High School in Ward 1 of the City of uMhlathuze.
'We need an urgent meeting between traditional leaders and the municipality; police do assist at some point, however, there are also reports that these learners have a traditional healer whom they are consulting, which contributes to their violent behaviour towards one another,' added Sithole.

South Africa's shift to digital IDs gains momentum amid high green ID book fraud

As South Africa adopts digital IDs to combat identity fraud, enhance security and reduce fraudulent activities, research has revealed that efforts to replace outdated green ID books with secure smart ID cards are gaining momentum. According to the Smile ID 2025 Fraud in Africa Report, the green ID books, historically vulnerable due to weak security features, recorded Africa's highest fraud rate in 2023, at 34%. ALSO READ: WATCH: Home Affairs brings services closer to the community The report further states that in March 2024, fraud rates for green ID books were 500% higher than for smart ID cards, validating the shift to the more secure system. Moreover, fraud targets Africa's most common identity documents: driver's licences followed at 24%, driven by their frequent use across formal and informal contexts, increasing their exposure to misuse. However, passports, often perceived as more secure owing to stricter issuance protocols, showed a fraud rate of 20%. The 'others' category, including work permits and alien cards, accounted for 19%, while voter IDs had the lowest fraud rate, at 14%. These findings highlight the diverse vulnerabilities across ID types, with national IDs remaining the most at risk due to their ubiquity. While passports and other specialised documents like work permits have lower fraud rates, their misuse often involves high-stakes activities such as international travel or employment fraud, with significant financial and reputational risks. Monthly Fraud Trends by Region (Biometric and Document Fraud): January marked a peak for east and southern Africa, while December saw west and central Africa reach their highest fraud rates. 2 suspects arrested in connection with murder of IFP deputy chief whip

2 suspects arrested in connection with murder of IFP deputy chief whip Police have made a breakthrough in the murder investigation of IFP Deputy Chief Whip Khethamabala Sithole and have arrested two suspects. The Witness reports that a task team established to probe Sithole's death made the arrests this week. Police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo says the two suspects have been charged with two counts of attempted murder, following the incident which took place at Buyafuthi hostel in Katlehong last Saturday. 'The team brought in three people for questioning. Two of them, aged 30 and 32, were linked to the incident, while the third person was released. More arrests are expected as the investigation continues. 'The suspects will be appearing [in] the Palmridge Magistrate's Court today,' Masondo says. Masondo says Sithole was killed by the suspects on Saturday evening in Katlehong, Gauteng. 'It was reported that unknown men opened fire on the group of people gathered for a meeting. Sithole was declared dead on the scene while two more people were taken to hospital with gunshot injuries.' Provincial secretary Alco Ngobese was also injured in the shooting and is receiving treatment. IFP national spokesperson Mkhuleko Hlengwa described Sithole as 'a hard-working servant leader of the people and our country'. Sithole joined the IFP in his youth and served in various party structures, including as IFP Gauteng provincial chairperson. The EFF in Gauteng said, earlier in the week, the death may have been politically motivated and slammed political intolerance. 'Political killings are unacceptable and undermine our democracy. We therefore condemn all acts of political violence and urge all parties to show maximum tolerance and respect for opposing views. Democracy must be built on peace, not violence.' The Good Party also shared its condolences. 'Violence has no place in our democracy. May his soul rest in peace.' The ANC also paid tribute to Sithole on Sunday. 'We condemn this brutal act and call for urgent intervention by law enforcement to bring the perpetrators to justice,' the ANC said.
