A sea of Jalur Gemilang: Johor man's show of patriotism
M. Kandapan, 65, has adorned his home and vehicle with over 3,000 pieces of the Jalur Gemilang, each one carefully placed as a testament to his unwavering love for the country.
This initiative is not new for Kandapan. For the past 25 years, he has made it a personal mission to decorate his home every National Month as a way to express gratitude for living in a peaceful, harmonious, and independent nation.
"This year, I replaced all the flags—about 3,000 of them, which I purchased online, and started decorating my home and car in July. My family helped me with the task," he said when met at his home in Bandar Seri Alam, Masai.
For this father of three, it's more than just decoration, it's a lifelong commitment. "I will continue to fly the Jalur Gemilang until the end of my life. This is my way of showing love for my country," he shared.
Despite the effort and cost involved, Kandapan takes immense joy in seeing the flags proudly fluttering outside his home and attached to his vehicle.
"Every time I see the Jalur Gemilang waving, I feel a deep sense of satisfaction and pride. It's an indescribable feeling," he added.
Kandapan believes everyone expresses their love for the country in their own way. "This is mine. It may seem small to some, but it means a lot to me. While decorating my home and car with flags may cost me, it's nothing compared to the sacrifices made by those who fought for the country's independence," he shared.
To Kandapan, Malaysia's true strength lies in its diversity. "Our unity across races, religions, and cultures is what makes Malaysia special," he said.
He also encourages everyone to support the 1 House 1 Jalur Gemilang campaign and to show respect for the flag.
"The Jalur Gemilang represents our pride. Don't fly it torn or upside down—it disrespects the independence we hold dear," he said, adding that his decorations are a lasting symbol of his love for Malaysia, a love he hopes to pass on to future generations.
"I want my children and grandchildren to remember the peace we have and truly understand the meaning of independence," he said, hoping the next generation will carry forward the spirit of patriotism. – BERNAMA

Penang To Host Major ASEAN Naval Events With 10 Warships Docking
GEORGE TOWN, Aug 13 (Bernama) -- Penang will take centre stage in regional maritime defence as the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) hosts three key ASEAN naval events from Aug 15 to 22 under Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship 2025. The week-long programme includes the 19th ASEAN Navy Chiefs' Meeting (ANCM), the Third ASEAN Multilateral Naval Exercise (AMNEX) and the ASEAN Fleet Review (AFR), with activities across George Town and Batu Ferringhi. The ANCM Working Committee deputy chairman Rear Admiral Datuk Mohd Fadzli Kamal Mohd Mohaldin told Bernama that the events will feature ten warships, seven from ASEAN countries and three from RMN, bringing about 1,600 naval personnel to Penang's Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal. He said the programme begins with the arrival of the vessels on Aug 15. It will be followed by the AMNEX Opening Ceremony and its 'Port Phase' on Aug 16, which allows naval officers to finalise plans for the joint sea exercises. The RMN will also host the Naval Engineering Conference (NEC), a scientific forum uniting regional naval engineers to discuss innovations under the theme 'Innovation and Technology Towards Improving Ship Survivability at Sea'. A highlight open to the public is the ASEAN Navies' City Parade (ANCP) on Aug 17 at the Esplanade in Padang Kota Lama, held alongside Penang's Hari Buletin 4.0 event. The parade commemorates the historic 1990 International Royal Fleet Review, which saw 59 warships and over 11,000 naval personnel visit Penang. Visitors will also have the rare opportunity to tour the docked warships at Swettenham Pier, gaining insights into the latest naval technologies. The programme includes the various contingents' parade, local agency display, cultural performances, maritime asset salutes and RMN helicopter flypasts. Perak to set up temporary shelters for stray animals
IPOH: The Perak government is planning to establish temporary shelters for stray animals to tackle the rising issue of abandoned pets. State Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Sandrea Ng Shy Ching said the state is collaborating with NGOs to identify suitable locations. 'These shelters will be managed by NGOs with minimal state facilitation while long-term solutions like adoption centres are explored,' she said. She added that the shelters will provide care for strays, particularly those involved in public complaints. Sandrea spoke at a press conference after launching the 2025 Perak Pawsitive Initiative for Kinta district. The event was graced by the Raja Permaisuri of Perak, Tuanku Zara Salim, who visited exhibition booths at the Malaysian Red Crescent Hall.
