Ex-Children's Laureate Wales Connor Allen grateful mum called police on him
Wales' former children's laureate says he is grateful his mum called the police on him at the age of 16 after he attacked her. Connor Allen is a poet, writer and actor and was Children's Laureate Wales from 2021 to 2023, but struggled during his teenage years. He pleaded guilty to assault, battery and grievous bodily harm in court but was given a second chance after an intervention by those closest to him.Connor has since turned his life around and is trying to inspire the next generation.
Connor, who was raised on a council estate in Newport, said the anger had been simmering during his teenage years. His dad was absent from his life and as a mixed-race teenager he often struggled to fit in."It was just my mum, a single mum, white mum, and my father is black Jamaican. So that absence for me growing up without a father but also without that 'blackness'," he said.He started getting in trouble with the police and it soon came to a head when he lashed out at his mum."We were arguing and shouting. My anger erupted on my mum. Obviously there's instant regret, but the action has already been done," he said.Looking back, Connor is full of admiration for her making that decision."She didn't know what was going to happen to me when the police took me. "But to have that courage to actually say 'something needs to happen because my son is off the rails,' I always look back at that courage."
Now 32, he still clearly remembers sitting in the courtroom facing his mum."Even though she was going through all that hurt she still pleaded with the judge," he said. His teachers at Lliswerry Comprehensive School had also seen his potential. Connor said he feels blessed that they fought for him to have a second chance. He said: "My mum, the teachers, they wrote a letter to the judge and asked for a suspended sentence. I look back at that period and think if it wasn't for the people who believed in me where would I have been?"Connor said it was "empowering" to have that support despite admitting what he did that night was "horrific"."To go through all of that and it culminating in you lashing out to have people at your lowest moment they still believe in you... that for me was huge," he said.
His love of writing came from reading books that his mum would buy him as a child. In particular, the Harry Potter series which allowed him to go into different worlds other than his own.He also took inspiration from the stories told in grime and rap music. That led him to write The Making of a Monster, a grime-theatre mash-up about growing up, working out his place in the world and the danger of a life spiralling out of control. Connor is currently writing a sequel Forgiveness of a Monster about finding forgiveness for himself, and his absent father."I always believe in second chances, If I can give that give of empowerment and belief then who knows what they can go on and achieve," he said.
You can hear Connor's interview on Books that Made Me with Lucy Owen on BBC Radio Wales at 18:30 GMT on Friday and then on Sounds

Harry Potter star's new TV show with trans icon is coming out imminently
Fans have just days to wait to see Harry Potter star Nick Frost and Jordan Gray in a new hit sitcom. The 53-year-old actor, who will be playing Rubeus Hagrid in HBO's Harry Potter revival, takes the lead opposite transgender icon Jordan in Transaction – which she originally wrote as a series of Comedy Central shorts. Nick and other adult actors have come under fire after signing onto the Potter series, due to J.K. Rowling's comments about the trans community. In the new show, supermarket boss Simon (Nick) sparks backlash in the LGBTQ+ community after a marketing campaign goes badly wrong. He employs transgender woman Liv (Jordan) in a bid to turn things around, but he soon faces another struggle as she's described in the synopsis as someone who 'ticks the diversity box, but not much else'. ITV teases: 'Despite a non-existent work ethic, it's pretty much impossible for Liv to get the sack, encouraging her to wreak havoc on the supermarket night shift.' The series launches on June 24 on ITVX, where all episodes will be available to stream. 'My one true goal with this show is to create something as timeless as my implants,' Jordan quipped when the show was announced. And executive producer Kenton Allen said at the time: 'Transaction promises to be a very eye-catching contemporary comedy, with Jordan Gray, Nick Frost and Thomas Gray forming an unlikely but electric three-some. 'Jordan's razor-sharp writing and timing paired with Nick's legendary comedic presence is comedy dynamite.' The comedy is based on her former six-part series of shorts of the same name for Comedy Central, which followed the same plot. She told Gay Star News in 2020 that she wrote the piece as a away of creating a character who was a 'regular tit-for-brains, not some tragic hero'. Jordan, 36, rose to fame as The Voice's first transgender contestant in 2016, making it to the semi-finals before moving into comedy, appearing on the likes of The Russell Howard Hour and Friday Night Live. On the later in 2022, she performed her song Better Than You about life as a transgender woman, and stripped naked to play the piano with her penis. Nick was recently forced to respond to backlash facing the Harry Potter show and wider franchise over its creator's comments, which some have deemed as transphobic. In a recent interview with The Observer, the Shaun of the Dead star insisted he does not share Rowling's views. 'She's allowed her opinion and I'm allowed mine, they just don't align in any way, shape or form,' he said. He also argued that the controversy and backlash might not be something people should want to 'blow over' for the sake of the wizarding franchise. Asked if it could 'overshadow the series', he replied: 'I don't know. But maybe it shouldn't blow over? We shouldn't just hope it will go away, because it makes it easier. Maybe we should educate ourselves.' Nick will be following in the footsteps of late actor Robbie Coltrane, who played Hagrid in the Harry Potter films, and he's not concerned with filling the character's giant shoes. 'You get cast because you're going to bring something to that. While I'm really aware of what went before me in terms of Robbie [Coltrane]'s amazing performance, I'm never going to try and be Robbie,' he told Collider. More Trending 'I'm going to try and do something, not 'different', I think you have to be respectful to the subject matter, but within that, there's scope for minutia.' He added: 'I always read Hagrid as he's like a lovely, lost, violent, funny, warm child. I think the beauty of being able to do a book a season means I get to explore that a lot more, and I can't wait. View More » 'He's funny! I want it to be funny and cheeky and scared and protective and childlike. That's what I'm planning on doing.' Got a story? JK Rowling tells Boy George 'I've never handcuffed a man to a wall and beaten him with a chain' as she mentions his assault conviction in last salvo in trans row
A trans rights row between JK Rowling and Boy George escalated yesterday as the author mentioned the singer's conviction for beating a male escort with a chain. A heated exchange ignited on X after the 63-year-old popstar dubbed the Harry Potter author a 'rich bored bully'. In a lengthy takedown, Rowling accused the Culture Club star of sneering at 'unenlightened plebs' and quipped: 'I've never been given 15 months for handcuffing a man to a wall and beating him with a chain.' George, whose real name is George O'Dowd, served four months out of a 15-month jail sentence in 2009 after being found guilty of assault and the false imprisonment of male escort Auden Carlsen. He later said he was prosecuted on his own evidence after he told the police he handcuffed Carlsen. The Karma Chameleon hitmaker tearfully apologised in 2017 when he appeared on Piers Morgan 's Life Stories and described it as a 'psychotic episode'. 'I stopped him from leaving my apartment,' he sighed. 'It's terrible what I did, and I'm ashamed and sorry for what I did. It was wrong.' This morning George hit back at Rowling in another dig by suggesting she was a muggle - a character in the Harry Potter series who lacks any magical ability. Rowling yesterday pointed out she had spent many years in poverty which is 'why I understand the importance of single-sex spaces for women'. 'You yourself have been convicted of violent assault,' she said. 'The overwhelming number of people who commit crimes of violence are male, just like you. 'That's why I don't want to see men identifying into women's prison cells or any of the spaces mentioned above. Not all men are violent or predatory, but enough are to make safeguarding necessary.' The war of words between Rowing and George started in April and saw the author blast the Culture Club singer after he said that she could not tell the difference between a transgender woman and a biological man. George has expressed support for transgender people online, in line with other stars such as Tilda Swinton and Pedro Pascal, who recently branded Rowling a 'heinous loser' on Instagram. Responding to a tweet suggesting that Pascal - an outspoken supporter of trans rights - was a misogynist, the singer wrote: 'Stop this nonsense that if you don't agree with @jk_rowling you hate women. She hates men. This is where this truth lies. 'She cannot differentiate between a 'trans' woman and a biological male. Which is weird with her imagination?' But Rowling - who now tweets almost daily about what she has called 'sex-based rights' - fired back with an eye-rolling emoji and the retort: 'I do not hate men.' She wrote: 'I'm married to a man, George. I do not hate men. 'I simply live in reality where men - however they identify - commit 98 per cent of sexual assaults, and 88 per cent of victims are female. 'Trans-identified men are no less likely than other kinds of men to pose a risk to women or girls.' She did not elaborate on how many of those committing sexual assaults were thought to be trans. She then added: 'Accusing me of hating men because I don't think trans women should be given access to all women-only spaces does rather suggest that... you're well aware that these are, in fact, men.' Rowling has been vocal on the subject of trans people for several years; in 2018, a spokesperson explained that her 'like' of a tweet calling trans women 'men in dresses' had been a 'middle-aged moment'. And following the Supreme Court judgment on April 17, Rowling has consistently referred to transgender women as being 'men'. The ruling, on an appeal brought by campaign group For Women Scotland, concluded that the legal definition of a woman was that of a biological female, when interpreting the Equality Act. It has led to the Equality and Human Rights Commission overhauling its rules on single-sex spaces - meaning that even trans people with gender recognition certificates (GRC) are still considered to be their biological birth sex. MPs have pointed out that the judgment will likely lead to discrimination against those who do not appear traditionally male or female. Dawn Butler, Labour MP for Brent East, told Parliament on last Tuesday: 'I do not know whether anyone else in the House has butch lesbian friends and has been with them when they have been told to get out of women's toilets, but I have. 'It is not pleasant; it is not nice.' And the ruling likely means that transgender men - who are considered biologically female - will be required to use women's toilets, even if they appear male and have, for example, a beard.

Scottish city is home to one of the most popular place for a walk this summer, according to TikTok
Scotland ranks three times in the UK's top ten walks as TikTok's 'hot girl walk' trend booms Scotland has claimed three spots in a new top ten list of the UK's most popular walks, as the viral TikTok trend known as the 'hot girl walk' continues to sweep the nation just in time for summer. Searches for 'hot girl walk' have skyrocketed by 529 percent in the past month alone, as more and more people look to embrace the feel-good trend now the sun is out and the days are longer. Despite the name, the trend isn't just for girls, it encourages anyone to head out for a four-mile stroll, while listening to motivational podcasts or repeating positive affirmations. Car leasing experts at Nationwide Vehicle Contracts have analysed trending TikTok searches to reveal the most in-demand walks for summer 2025, and three Scottish trails have made the cut, proving that the country's scenic walking spots are just as popular online as they are in real life. Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh was the highest ranked Scottish entry, coming in at number four overall. With its sweeping 360-degree views over the city, it's no surprise the extinct volcano is a magnet for both tourists and locals. TikTok searches for Arthur's Seat have hit 106,000 in the UK, with users sharing everything from sunrise selfies to peaceful sunset strolls. Its central location and ample parking near Holyrood Palace and Meadowbank make it an easy option for a spontaneous day trip into the capital. Meanwhile, the Glenfinnan Viaduct Trail in the Highlands secured tenth place with 38,700 TikTok searches. Best known for its appearance in the Harry Potter films, the iconic viaduct draws visitors hoping to catch a glimpse of the Jacobite steam train as it crosses the bridge. The trail also extends beyond the photo spot, offering a rewarding countryside hike through a picturesque Highland valley. Rounding out Scotland's top entries was Ben A'an in the Trossachs, which remains a favourite for those after a shorter hike with spectacular views. Its compact climb offers a powerful sense of achievement with stunning panoramic scenery at the summit, ideal for reflection and that all-important affirmation time. Urban walks near major cities also ranked highly, with Richmond Park in London topping the overall list thanks to its 192,000 TikTok searches. The leafy seven-mile loop is popular with Londoners looking to escape the bustle without leaving the city limits, and there are plenty of shorter three to four-mile routes on offer too. The park is well-equipped with cafes, toilet facilities and parking across several locations.
