The meeting also covered preparations for a ministerial-level gathering set later this year, where labor officials from both sides will further tackle concerns affecting OFWs in Qatar.
The DMW team is in Doha ahead of the 'Bagong Bayani ng Mundo OFW Serbisyo Caravan' on July 25, which brings together 12 Philippine agencies in one venue at Philippine School Doha to provide essential government services to Filipinos in the host country.

Remains of OFW killed in Iran-Israel missile strike return home

The remains of overseas Filipino worker (OFW) Leah Mosquera, who died from injuries sustained during an Iranian missile strike in Israel, arrived in the Philippines on Wednesday. Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac confirmed the repatriation in a Facebook post. Mosquera was critically injured when a missile struck a residential building in Rehovot, south of Tel Aviv, on June 15 amid escalating tensions between Israel and Iran. She was admitted to Shamir Medical Center and placed in intensive care but passed away on July 13. Two other Filipino workers were also injured in the incident but were released from the hospital after receiving treatment. Cacdac earlier paid tribute to Mosquera's dedication, calling her a symbol of the quiet heroism and strength of Filipino migrant workers. 'Her dedication and quiet heroism, we see the strength and sacrifices of our overseas Filipino workers who carry the hopes and dreams of their families, their communities, and our nation,' he said. The DMW and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) will provide full assistance to Mosquera's family.

DILG Chief Remulla Backs Off Humor After Sara Duterte Slams ‘Unprofessional' Posts

Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla has dialed back his online banter, saying 'no jokes for now' after being publicly criticized by Vice President Sara Duterte for his casual social media messaging during government announcements. Duterte, in a chance interview during her stay in The Hague, said she was surprised by the DILG's tone on official platforms, stressing that 'government must be professional.' Her remarks were seen as a direct hit on Remulla's informal approach, especially after the department joked about being 'too full from a good meal' before releasing suspension updates. Responding on social media, Remulla took a more serious tone while announcing class and government work suspensions, stating in Filipino, 'I won't joke for now. Even the vice president criticized me.' He added, 'No more bargains. My list was right this time.' Despite earlier backlash from netizens and missed areas in suspension lists, Remulla defended his style, saying it worked during his time as Cavite governor. President Marcos Jr. also came to his defense, saying that what matters most is that the message reaches the people effectively.

Trump to Visit Manila for 2026 ASEAN Summit

United States President Donald Trump has confirmed his attendance at the 44th ASEAN Summit to be hosted by the Philippines in 2026, Philippine Ambassador to the U.S. Jose Manuel Romualdez revealed in an interview with NewsWatch Plus. The commitment came during a conversation between the two following an official luncheon held in Washington as part of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s recent visit to the United States. Romualdez recalled asking Trump directly if he would attend the summit in Manila. 'Yes, I will definitely go,' Trump reportedly replied, according to the ambassador. Trump had previously stated in the Oval Office during a media engagement, 'If I'm invited, I'll go.' President Marcos formally extended the invitation, solidifying expectations that Trump will visit the country as part of the summit. The Philippines is set to host the 44th ASEAN Summit in 2026, which will coincide with two major milestones in PH-U.S. relations—the 80th anniversary of diplomatic ties and the 75th year of the Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT). The high-level summit will serve as a platform to strengthen regional cooperation and reaffirm longstanding alliances among member states and key partners like the United States. In his arrival statement from Washington, President Marcos described Trump's anticipated visit as a 'reaffirmation of our historic alliance.' He emphasized the importance of U.S.-Philippine relations, noting that the Mutual Defense Treaty remains a key pillar of the country's security framework. 'The United States is our oldest and only treaty ally,' Marcos said. 'This visit and summit will mark another chapter in our shared strategic interests.' Ask ChatGPT
