Team USA Wins Gold & Honours Johnny Gaudreau At 2025 World Championships

Team USA won the gold medal at the 2025 IIHF World Championships.
After defeating Switzerland 1-0 in overtime, they snapped a 92-year drought without winning gold at the Worlds.
When Team USA captain Clayton Keller went up to accept the trophy, he was joined by Columbus Blue Jackets' Zach Werenski, Buffalo Sabres' Tage Thompson, Nashville Predators' Brady Skjei and Vancouver Canucks' Connor Garland — all carrying a Gaudreau jersey.

They placed the jersey over the trophy in honour of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau, who tragically passed away before the 2024-25 season.
All year long, Team USA found ways to honour the Gaudreau brothers — including keeping Johnny's sweater hanging in his locker stall throughout the tournament.
It's been a strong year for USA Hockey on the international stage, and it ended with a gold medal at the Worlds to finally end the 92-year wait.
As mentioned, Werenski was part of the gold-winning team. That's exactly why he committed to going — he wanted to bring a gold medal back home before what will be a busy summer of weddings, including his own.

In the tournament, he finished with one goal and five assists for six points, was a +8, and had 21 shots on goal.
Werenski will now shift his attention to his wedding. As for the Blue Jackets' organization and fans, focus turns to the NHL Draft on June 27th and 28th, followed by one of the most important free agencies in franchise history.

Kekalainen's Hiring Another Sign Sabres GM's Time Could Be Nearing An End When the Buffalo Sabres announced Friday that former Columbus Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekalainen was joining the team as a special advisor to GM Kevyn Adams, a couple things became clear: firstly, it showed Kekalainen will be a highly-valued voice in the organization; but more importantly, it showed that Adams is more on the clock than ever -- and that Adams may have just hired the man who will succeed him if things don't go well for the team. 2:44 Now Playing Paused Ad Playing

Mika Zibanejad Calls World Championship In Sweden A Memory Of A Lifetime

David Kirouac-Imagn Images The 2025 IIHF Men's World Championship ended on a bitter-sweet note for Mika Zibanejad. Team Sweden suffered a crushing 6-2 defeat against Team USA on Saturday afternoon, decimating their dreams of winning the gold medal in front of their hometown fans. 'It was obviously tough, it is a tough reset from yesterday after being so disappointing,' Zibanejad said. 'Just the way we played yesterday, it wasn't hard to have a mindset of we have to play better and we owe it to ourselves. I thought we ended in the best way we could with the situation being.' Advertisement Sweden responded with a 6-2 win of their own on Sunday over Denmark to capture the bronze medal and Zibanejad even scored the final goal to put the icing on top of the cake. You don't get the opportunity to play in a tournament of this magnitude in front of your hometown fans very often, so Zibanejad cherished every moment of it. The 32-year-old talked about his experience with passion and pure happiness. 'It's going to be a memory with me for a lifetime,' Zibanejad said about playing in Stockholm, Sweden for the World Championship. 'Even though we didn't win gold, we got the bronze medal. It's a medal and we got to do it in front of our families, our friends, our fans. Zibanejad has now played at the 4 Nations Face-Off and World Championship. Is the 2026 Winter Olympic Games next on his international hockey agenda? That's something that he hasn't been thinking about a whole lot as of right now. 'It's been an honor, as always, to play for your country, represent your country, but now I'm going to take some time off and rest, and then I'll think about hockey later,' said Zibanejad.
