
U.P. police busts illegal religious conversion racket, arrest 10 accused
'The probe began in Agra in March after two sisters aged 18 and 33 were reported missing. Investigations revealed that they were allegedly coerced into religious conversion and were undergoing radicalization. One of the sisters had also put a picture of a girl holding an AK 47 rifle as her profile picture on a social media platform. Preliminary investigations found that the sisters were targeted by a gang involved in 'love jihad' and radicalization,' said Agra Commissioner of Police Deepak Kumar. He added evidence of the racket receiving funding originating from America and Canada is also noticed during investigation,'.
'The arrested individuals activities included receiving illicit funds, providing safe houses for covert operations, offering legal advice, and providing other forms of assistance to facilitate the conversions and radicalization,' added the police.
In light of multi State and transnational imprints of the racket dedicated units of the State police, including the Special Task Force (STF) and the Anti-Terror Squad (ATS), are deployed to assist with the ongoing investigation.
'This action is part of 'Mission Asmita', an ongoing initiative aimed at dismantling such illicit syndicates,' added the U.P. police. Mission Asmita, is a dedicate initiative of U.P. police to take on criminals involved in serious offenses such as illegal conversions, radicalization, love jihad and deliberate attempts to undermine national security with the help of transnational network.

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Tuesday trapped the chief inspection officer, rationing department, while allegedly accepting Rs 1.75 lakh bribe in Mumbai. According to ACB, the accused, Vinayak Vasant Nikam, had sought the same amount per month from a gas agency against whom he had taken action in the past. According to ACB, the complainant works as a manager in a gas agency in Kandivali. His relatives also have a gas agency in Thane. In October 2024, action was taken against the complainant's gas agency by Nikam. In August 2024, action was taken against the gas agency of his relatives in Thane by the rationing department. Thereafter, on July 16, Nikam contacted the complainant on his mobile and asked him to come and meet him in the office. Accordingly, when the complainant met Vinayak Nikam on July 17, he demanded a bribe of Rs 1.5 lakh per month for not taking action against the complainant's gas agency and Rs 1 lakh for not taking action against the gas agency of his relatives, totalling Rs 2.5 lakh per month. When the complainant said he cannot pay that much money and asked for some way out, the accused told him that he would have to talk to 'saheb'. The next day the accused contacted the complainant and said he had spoken to saheb, and asked him to meet him. However, since the complainant did not want to pay the bribe, he appeared in person at the Anti-Corruption Bureau, Worli, Mumbai on July 25 and filed a complaint. The ACB verified the complaint and found it to be genuine. Accordingly, the complainant was asked to meet the accused, and the latter was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 1.75 lakh from the complainant. Accordingly, a case was registered against him, and he was placed under arrest.

IED blast injures three jawans during Maoist encounter in Chhattisgarh
RAIPUR: A Maoist cadre was killed in an encounter with security forces in Sukma district, about 500 km south of Raipur, on Tuesday, the Bastar police said. Three personnel of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) also sustained injuries in a pressure Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast during the operation. A gunfight broke out between security forces and Maoists, and the intermittent exchange of fire continued in the forested terrain along the inter-district border region of Sukma-Dantewada. 'Based on intelligence inputs regarding the presence of Maoists in the given area of Sukma district, a joint team comprising Special Task Force (STF), District Reserve Guard (DRG) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) launched a search operation. So far, a body of a male Maoist has been recovered from the encounter site as the search operation continues. Arms, ammunition, explosive materials and items of daily use were also recovered by the forces,' said a senior police officer. All the injured jawans have been safely evacuated and referred to a higher health centre for immediate medical attention, he added. Their conditions were stated to be stable and out of danger. As the search operation remains underway, further operational details were not shared owing to the safety concerns of the personnel engaged in the anti-Maoist campaign on the ground. In the last 18 months, as many as 426 Maoist cadres have allegedly been killed in various encounters in the Bastar Range. Sukma, among the seven Maoist-affected districts in the Bastar zone, is cited as an epicentre of the left-wing extremist group in south Chhattisgarh.

' We are yet to identify the deceased Maoist,' the IG said. Three DRG personnel were injured when a pressure improvised explosive device (IED) planted by Maoists detonated during the operation. 'The injured have been safely evacuated and are being referred to higher medical centres for advanced treatment. Their condition is stable and out of danger,' the IG said. The IG further added that the operation is still underway and further details, including the exact location, cannot be disclosed at this stage to ensure the safety of personnel involved. With this latest encounter, the number of Maoists killed in Chhattisgarh this year has risen to 226. Of these, 208 were killed in the Bastar division, which comprises the districts of Bijapur, Bastar, Kanker, Kondagaon, Narayanpur, Sukma, and Dantewada.
