The San Fran-Sin City battle for a notch in the W column is officially on.
On Saturday, Aug. 16 at 4 p.m. EST, the 0-1 San Francisco 49ers will take on the 0-0-1 Las Vegas Raiders in a week 2 NFL preseason game at Sin City's own Allegiant Stadium.
In week one, Niners backup QB Mac Jones saw action on the field. He completed four of seven passes for 74 yards and an interception in the team's 30-9 loss against the Broncos. Corey Kiner rushed for 45 yards on ten carries.
Pete Carroll's Raiders had a more unique season debut. Not only did they tie the Seahawks 23-23 but free agent signee and starting signal-caller Geno Smith flipped double birds at a fan of his former team who was holding a sign that read 'Bigger bust – Geno or JaMarcus Russell.'
As for the actual game, backup Aidan O'Connell led the charge for the Raiders tossing 18 out of 30 passes for completion, including one into the end zone. Shedrick Jackson had four receptions for 76 yards and a TD.

Surprise: It's a player-for-player swap in Saints-Jaguars Khalen Saunders trade

Now this is a surprise. Khalen Saunders was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday night, but not in exchange for a draft pick. NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports that the New Orleans Saints got a player in return: Luke Fortner. The 27-year old is a former third-round pick and two-year starter for Jacksonville, having played college football at Kentucky. Fortner tallied more than 2,400 snaps in the Jaguars offense during the 2022 and 2023 seasons, but he saw a reduced role last year, and is probably at his best coming in off the bench rather than manning a starting position. But that's an improvement in depth for a Saints offensive line which sorely needed it. They already lost Will Clapp to a season-ending injury, and he had been signed as a preferred backup behind Pro Bowl center Erik McCoy. New Orleans hosted a group of free agent centers for a tryout last week and settled on All-UFL lineman Mike Panasiuk, who got some snaps in during Sunday's preseason game behind rookie backup Torriceli Simpkins III. But Panasiuk drew a penalty and the Saints could look into playing Simpkins at guard with Trevor Penning and Cesar Ruiz both managing injuries. Stay tuned.

49ers Could Face NFL Punishment Over Brandon Aiyuk Decision

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk is likely itching to get back on the field after suffering a season-ending injury in Week 7 last season, but he and the team may have broken an NFL rule as he works his way back from a torn ACL and MCL. Prior to San Francisco's 22-19 preseason win over the Las Vegas Raiders on Saturday, Aiyuk was seen catching passes from quarterback Brock Purdy. "Obviously he looks great physically, progressing in the right way with his knee," Purdy said, via the San Francisco Chronicle. "But more than anything, man, you can tell he wants to get back out there and compete, which I love." More NFL: 49ers Lose Bidding War to NFC Rival for Former Second-Round WR And while that might not seem like anything egregious on the surface, it's a decision that could come back to bite the 49ers, according to NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco on the latest episode of "49ers Talk." "If you were there early, you got to see Brandon Aiyuk running some routes," co-host Jennifer Lee Chan said. "Brock Purdy gave him a lot of compliments, he's saying he has a great mindset, and I think he's on his way for sure." "I don't know that that's allowed, to have a PUP player running routes and catching passes from the quarterback, whether it's at practice or in the game," Maiocco added. "So, maybe the 49ers will be hearing from the NFL on that one." Henderson/Getty Images More NFL: Colts Predicted to Replace Anthony Richardson With Heisman Trophy Frontrunner Per NFL rules, any player on the PUP list, regardless of whether they are on the active or reserve PUP list, are not allowed to practice with the team in any capacity. Violations of this rule could result in "a fine on the involved club, fines or suspensions of involved individuals, as well as the possible forfeiture of draft choices by the involved club." Aiyuk could face a personal fine of $25,000 and the 49ers a fine of $75,000, according to the Sporting News. The 49ers are expected to be without Aiyuk for the first third of the season—head coach Kyle Shanahan recently told reporters the $120 million wide receiver likely won't return until Week 6 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers—leaving the team to rely on Jauan Jennings, Ricky Pearsall, and Jacob Cowing plus journeymen Russell Gage, Demarcus Robinson, and Robbie Chosen.
