Operation Sindoor proved there is no safe haven for our enemies: PM Modi

Hindustan Times28-07-2025
Operation Sindoor showed the world the way India would respond if its sovereignty was attacked, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday, adding the cross-border military offensive against terror infrastructure has created a new self-confidence across the country. After his visit to the UK and Maldives, Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in Tamil Nadu where he took part in the valedictory celebrations of the Aadi Thiruvathirai festival(DPR PMO)
Speaking at an event at the Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple in Ariyalur district of Tamil Nadu, held to mark the birth anniversary of iconic Chola dynasty emperor Rajendra Chola-I, Modi emphasised that India's spirituality can be instrumental for peace while its military prowess will ensure the country's enemies have no place.
'The world saw how India responds if someone attacks its security and sovereignty,' the PM asserted, referring to the military strikes against terror infrastructure in Pakistan in retaliation to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives.
'Operation Sindoor proved that for enemies of India, for terrorists, there is no safe haven. Operation Sindoor has created a new awakening, a new self-confidence across the country and has forced the world to acknowledge India's strength,' Modi, who was visiting Tamil Nadu on a two-day trip, added.
Modi also released a commemorative coin honouring Rajendra Chola 1 at the event, which also commemorated 1,000 years of Rajendra Chola's legendary maritime expedition to South East Asia and the commencement of the construction of the Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple, a magnificent example of Chola architecture.
The names of emperors Raja Raja Chola and his son Rajendra Chola-I are synonymous with India's identity and pride, Modi said and announced that grand statues would be built for them in Tamil Nadu. These statues will be 'modern pillars of our historic awakening,' he added.
'The Chola empire is like an ancient road map for developed India. The economic and military heights India reached during the Chola era continue to inspire us even today. Raja Raja Chola built a powerful navy, which Rajendra Chola further strengthened…It shows us that if we are to achieve a 'Viksit Bharat' (developed India), we must strengthen our Navy and defence forces,' Modi said.
In the last 10 years, the PM said, his government has worked tirelessly to protect and preserve India's heritage. 'The Chola emperors had woven India into a thread of cultural unity. Today, our government is carrying forward the same vision of the Chola era. Through initiatives like the Kashi-Tamil Sangamam and the Saurashtra-Tamil Sangamam, we are strengthening these centuries-old bonds of unity,' he said.
The PM also invoked the rich legacy of Chola kings and their patronage of Saivite spiritualism. 'Our Shaivite tradition has played a vital role in shaping India's cultural identity. The Chola emperors were key architects of this legacy. Even today, Tamil Nadu remains one of the most significant centres where this living tradition continues to thrive.'
Noting that July 27 marks the death anniversary of former President APJ Abdul Kalam, Modi said in order to lead a developed India, the country needs millions of youths like Kalam and the Chola kings.
The event began with rendition of spiritual hymns by celebrated musician and Rajya Sabha member Ilaiyaraja singing in praise of Lord Shiva in the presence of heads of Shaivite mutts. The event also coincided with the Aadi Thiruvathirai festival. 'When the world is struggling with problems like instability and violence, Shaivite principles show us a path of solutions,' Modi said. 'Today's India is taking forward the concept of One World, One Family, One Future.'
Modi, who arrived in Tuticorin on July 26 night and inaugurated and laid foundation stones for projects worth about ₹4,900 crore in the state, which will go to assembly polls next year, also held a roadshow on Sunday from Trichy to the Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple.
During the roadshow, the prime minister stood on the running board of his vehicle and waved at the people who lined up on both sides of the road. The route was dotted with flags of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), its ally AIADMK and other NDA partners. Governor RN Ravi, DMK leaders and state ministers Thangam Thennarasu and SS Sivasankar, VCK's chief and MP Thol Thirumavalan and several BJP leaders also accompanied Modi on the stage.

RPAs for 3 services to mountain radars: DAC clears procurements worth Rs 67,000 cr

The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday approved a range of military procurement proposals for the armed forces worth nearly Rs 67,000 crore. These include the procurement of Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPAs) for the three services, a compact autonomous surface craft for the Navy, maintenance support for the C-17 and C-130J fleets of the Indian Air Force (IAF), and a comprehensive annual maintenance contract for the S-400 long range air defence missile system. The DAC's approval for the maintenance of both American and Russian platforms with the IAF can be considered a display of strategic autonomy by India, especially at a time when the US President Donald Trump has been criticising India over its crude oil imports from Russia, a move New Delhi termed 'unjustified and unreasonable targeting' of the country. The IAF has a fleet of 12 C-130J-30 Super Hercules Aircraft, procured from the US in 2010-11, followed by additional orders in the subsequent years. The IAF operates a fleet of 11 C-17 Globemaster III aircraft procured between 2013 and 2019. Both were procured by India from the US under separate Foreign Military Sale (FMS) agreements. India had signed the S-400 deal with Russia in 2018, a year after the US passed the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA). The long range surface to air missile system played a critical role in defending Indian skies during Operation Sindoor between May 7 and 10. These procurements are particularly significant in the light of Operation Sindoor, which was launched by India on May 7 after the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that left 26 people dead, and appear to be drawn from lessons learnt from it. According to a statement issued by the Defence Ministry, the DAC has granted an Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for the procurement of Thermal Imager-based Driver Night Sights for the Battle Mechanised Platforms with the Army, which will enhance the night driving capability of BMPs and provide higher mobility and operational advantage to the mechanised infantry. The DAC is the primary body responsible for approving major capital acquisitions in defence. The first step in the defence procurement process is the Acceptance of Necessity (AoN). However, obtaining an AoN does not always lead to a final order. The DAC also approved the procurement of the compact autonomous surface craft, the BrahMos fire control system and launchers, and the upgrade of the BARAK-1 point defence missile system for the Navy. 'The procurement of the compact autonomous surface craft will enable the Indian Navy to detect, classify and neutralise threats during anti-submarine warfare missions,' the statement said. For the Indian Air Force, an AoN was granted for the procurement of mountain radars and the upgrade of the SAKSHAM/SPYDER weapon system, which will enhance air surveillance capabilities along and across borders in mountainous regions. The upgrade of the SAKSHAM/SPYDER system for integration with the Integrated Air Command and Control System will strengthen India's air defence capabilities. Additionally, the procurement of MALE RPAs for three services will support round-the-clock surveillance and combat readiness, as these aircraft can carry multiple payloads and weapons while operating at longer ranges for extended missions.

Watch: Vande Bharat Zips Across J&K's Anji, Chenab Bridges

The Vande Bharat Express was caught on camera smoothly gliding across the Anji and Chenab bridges in Jammu and Kashmir. The mesmerising visuals, shared by the Ministry of Railways, show the red-orange train cruising through the terrain, with the Kashmir valley in the background. "The iconic orange streak of #VandeBharatExpress powers through the challenging terrain, harmonising with the landscape as it gracefully crosses the awe-inspiring Anji Bridge and Chenab Bridge," the Ministry wrote on X. The iconic orange streak of #VandeBharatExpress powers through the challenging terrain, harmonising with the landscape as it gracefully crosses the awe-inspiring Anji Bridge and Chenab Bridge. — Ministry of Railways (@RailMinIndia) August 5, 2025 The Vande Bharat Express was flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 6, linking the valley with high-speed rail services for the first time. The Chenab Bridge, featured in the video, is the world's highest railway arch bridge. Standing at a height of 359 metres above the river, the bridge is hailed as an engineering marvel. It connects the regions of Katra and Reasi and rises even taller than the Eiffel Tower in Paris. PM Modi had earlier called the Chenab Bridge as an " extraordinary feat of architecture," adding that it would boost connectivity between Jammu and Srinagar. Approved in 2003 under PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the project took 22 years to complete. Engineers constructed 93 deck segments, each 85 tonnes, with remarkable precision. The Chenab Bridge is part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link. Spanning 1,315 metres, its 467-metre steel arch is built to withstand winds over 260 kmph and seismic activity, using 28,000 tonnes of steel and 6 lakh bolts. The Anji Khad Bridge is India's first cable-stayed rail bridge. Completed in 11 months, it towers 331 metres above the valley, anchored by 96 cables and a 193-metre-high inverted Y-shaped pylon. Together, they cut travel time between Katra and Srinagar to three hours with the Vande Bharat Express. They are also built to support heavy artillery.
