Verify Aadhaar via app, act on fake ids used for travel: Railway Ministry
Ticket checking staff will authenticate passengers' Aadhaar IDs in real-time using the mAadhar application developed by the Unique Identification Authority of India, the Railway Ministry said in an official communication to all zones.
The ministry said that the initiative has been taken after instances of individuals staying unauthorisedly in India with fake or forged Aadhaar cards and using them as identity proof for various purposes, including employment and travel, have been brought to its notice.
"In order to curb impersonation and misuse of Aadhar Card, it is imperative to strengthen identity verification mechanisms. TC (Ticket checking) staff must check and verify Passenger IDs at random on every trip," the Railway Ministry said in the letter addressed to the Principal Chief Commercial Managers.
It noted, "The mAadhaar application, developed by Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), is useful for easy verification. The App provides several features, including QR code-based verification, which enables reliable and paperless identity validation." According to the Ministry, upon scanning the QR code on an Aadhaar card, the app displays key identity information such as photograph, Aadhaar number, name, gender, date of birth and address, thereby facilitating real-time verification of the authenticity of the document.
"This application works in offline mode also. This application might serve as a useful tool to curb impersonation and misuse of Aadhaar Card," the circular said.
Urging the zones to sensitise the ticket checking staff to download and use the mAadhaar App (available for free on both Google Play Store and Apple App Store) on their mobile phones, the letter said this app should also be used to verify the "genuineness of contractual onboard staff e.g. OBHS (on-board housekeeping services), Catering etc. travelling in the train".
"In the event any such forged or fake Aadhaar card is suspected, the matter should be promptly reported to the RPF/local Police/GRP for necessary action," it added.
According to the Aadhar Act, if a person impersonates his/her ID card or procures it fraudulently, he or she can face imprisonment as well as fines.

New Delhi: A man allegedly murdered a woman he was in a relationship with at his flat in east Delhi. Neelesh, 23, who lived in Trilokpuri in east Delhi was reported missing on May 28 after she left home around 12.30pm, stating she was going to the bank. Her father, Ahivaran Singh, filed a missing person report at Mayur Vihar police station at 6pm that evening. Her phone was last active at 2pm, after which it was switched off. On May 30, a decomposed body was found stuffed in a suitcase in the Pilkhuwa area of Hapur. A murder case was registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita with the additional charge of causing evidence to disappear. After being informed by UP Police of the body, Delhi Police personnel accompanied Singh and his son to Pilkhuwa, where they identified the body. The investigating team arrested Satendra Yadav, 29, a native of Chitrakoot and currently residing in West Vinod Nagar, east Delhi. He was arrested on June 5 near the Sikheda canal bridge in Hapur, close to where the suitcase had been dumped. Yadav was employed at a construction firm in Gurgaon. Police recovered several items from his possession, including Neelesh's bank passbook, cheques, KYC documents, her Aadhaar and PAN cards and the black TUV car used in the crime. When interrogated, Yadav confessed to killing the woman, claiming that he and Neelesh were in a relationship since her hospitalisation for kidney treatment in Delhi. In Oct last year, he moved to Patiala for a restaurant construction project and lived there for five months. He later became suspicious of Neelesh, suspecting she was involved romantically with someone else. "Every time I called her, the phone line was busy," he alleged to the cops. "I loved her and supported her during her illness, but she kept taking advantage of me. I also tried to check her phone, but either it was locked or she didn't allow me to go through it." On May 28, Neelesh visited Yadav at his home. He had borrowed Rs 5.3 lakh from her, part of which he used to purchase the TUV. When she asked for Rs 2 lakh to be repaid, an argument escalated. In a fit of rage, he strangled her with a scarf. He stored her body in a blue suitcase, waited for night, turned off his phone and drove to Sikheda, where he dumped the suitcase near the canal. On the way, he destroyed her phone near Ghazipur. Police are investigating whether the money Neelesh gave to Yadav was meant for their wedding. The cops also recovered CCTV footage in which the suspect can be seen walking with a suitcase in hand.

Fake Aadhaar card making racket busted in K'ganj
Patna: Police in Kishanganj have claimed to have busted a racket of making fake Aadhaar cards for people living close to the India-Nepal and the Indo-Bangladesh borders. One person was arrested during a raid at Gilhabari village under Jiyapokhar police station area in Kishanganj district, while police are looking for two other members of the racket. Police said the accused had also been working to provide Indian identity card allegedly to the Bangladeshi infiltrators. "During the raid, several fake Aadhaar cards, a laptop, printer, Nepali currency, Nepali SIM cards, a scanner, and biometric devices were recovered from their possession," police said. Acting on a tip-off, police conducted a raid on a premises at Gilhabari village on Friday late evening and arrested one person identified as Asraful (40). During interrogation, Asraful disclosed that he, along with his two other associates, Jamal and Pankaj, were involved in making fake Aadhaar cards for people, especially those living in areas near the Indo-Nepal border, police said. "A search is underway to nab his two associates," Kishanganj SP Sagar Kumar told reporters on Saturday.

Elderly man's body fished out from Koel river
Rourkela: Body of a 60-year-old man, who drowned while trying to cross the Koel river here on Friday, was recovered on Saturday following a prolonged search operation. The deceased has been identified as Birendra Kar, a resident of Telipada under Birmitrapur police station limits. Police said Kar attempted to cross the river at Baikuntha ghat around 4 pm on Friday. Midway through the water, he reportedly lost balance and drowned. Two locals witnessed the incident and alerted a nearby police patrol vehicle. Sector-19 police, along with fire brigade personnel, launched a search but were unable to locate him on Friday. The search operation resumed on Saturday, and Kar's body was recovered from the river in the presence of police officers. His identity was confirmed through an Aadhaar card found in his pocket. Following the recovery, Sector-19 police informed their counterparts at Birmitrapur police station, who in turn notified Kar's family. The family later arrived in Rourkela and lodged a formal complaint. After post-mortem, the body was handed over to the family members. An unnatural death case has been registered, and further investigation is underway.
