Gold extends rise on Fed rate cut hopes, softer dollar
Gold extended gains to a third straight session on Thursday, supported by rising expectations of an interest rate cut by the U.S. Federal Reserve in September following tame inflation data, which also weighed on the dollar. Spot gold rose 0.4% to $3,367.53 per ounce as of 0156 GMT. U.S. gold futures for December delivery added 0.3% to $3,416.70. "Markets are pricing in the chance that the Fed cuts 50 basis points in September. So the dollar's weakening, gold's going up as a result, yields are also down," said Kyle Rodda, financial market analyst. "The technical setup of gold looks really constructive. The trend still looks higher. We just basically need to see the market break through $3,400 level on a sustained basis." The dollar languished near multi-week lows against its rivals, making gold less expensive for holders of other currencies. Benchmark U.S. 10-year Treasury yields held near a one-week low. U.S. consumer prices rose only marginally in July, strengthening expectations of a Fed rate cut next month, with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent noting there is a good chance the central bank will opt for a 50 bps reduction. Traders now see a cut on September 17 as a near certainty, according to data compiled by LSEG, and even lay around 6% odds on a super-sized half-point trim. Non-yielding gold thrives in a low-interest-rate environment. Investors are awaiting the U.S. economic data due later this week, including the U.S. Producer Price Index, weekly jobless claims and retail sales data for clues into the Fed's rate path. On the geopolitical front, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said he warned U.S. President Donald Trump ahead of his talks with Vladimir Putin that the Russian leader was "bluffing" about his desire to end the war. Elsewhere, spot silver gained 0.3% to $38.59 per ounce, platinum added 0.1% to $1,340.55 and palladium rose 1.5% to $1,139.52. Rohde & Schwarz delivers DAB+ network for Cellnex Broadcast Partners
The project's rapid timeline saw the contract signed in March 2025 and the network fully operational by May 1. Following the transfer of broadcast licenses, Cellnex Broadcast Partners needed to establish a completely new DAB+ transmission network for Flanders and Brussels. The company turned to Rohde & Schwarz, which was able to deliver 28 transmitters in under two months. For commercial and customer satisfaction reasons Cellnex Broadcast Partners was naturally keen to get the new service, branded 10D, on air as quickly as possible. At the same time, it recognised the need for the highest operational and technical standards in the solution, as well as maximising quality, reliability and sustainability, and delivering the best total cost of ownership over the lifetime of the installation. Based on previous positive experiences with Rohde & Schwarz transmitters, and particularly the very low maintenance requirement, Cellnex Broadcast Partners turned to the company for the new network. The need for 28 individual transmitters was identified, with an average transmitter power output of approximately 1.5 kW. The R&S TMV9evo is an air-cooled VHF transmitter which delivers up to 50% efficiency, due to its advanced Doherty amplifier technology. It is highly resilient, with advanced redundancy including dual drive and passive standby, meeting the Cellnex Broadcast Partners' expectations of uninterrupted broadcast. Its automated control and management includes adaptive efficiency optimization of amplifier parameters. 'The R&S TMV9evo is designed for just this sort of installation,' said Guy Deschrijver, Rohde & Schwarz Benelux B.V. at Rohde & Schwarz. 'What made this project particularly exciting was that the contract was signed in March 2025, and the complete network was on air on 1 May, less than eight weeks later.' 'Rohde & Schwarz could meet such a tight schedule, thanks to our vertically integrated manufacturing, which gives us complete control over every aspect of the build,' Guy Deschrijver explained. 'More than that, we have the capability to do complete, full-power testing of every single transmitter before it leaves the building, so when each gets to site, all it needs is power and a signal and it is ready for commercial service.' Pascal Levrier, Cellnex Broadcast Partners, added: 'We had four top level requirements for the 10D transmitter network. First, it had to be completely reliable, so we were looking for excellent resilience and redundancy. Second, it had to be efficient, to control energy costs and drive sustainability, and we were impressed with the Rohde & Schwarz promise of close to 50% power efficiency.' 'Third, we took a lifecycle view of the installation, so we carefully considered the total cost of ownership, including routine and preventative maintenance,' Pascal continued. 'Finally, there was the time pressure – we wanted to get the service up and running to delight our audiences as quickly as possible. Rohde & Schwarz hit all these requirements, with the result that the 10D network sets a new standard for radio broadcasting in Flanders.'

Gold rises on increasing Fed rate-cut bets, weaker dollar
Gold rose on Wednesday as expectations of a U.S. Federal Reserve interest rate cut in September gained traction following mild inflation data, while a weaker dollar bolstered demand. Spot gold gained 0.6% to $3,363.61 per ounce by 1026 GMT. U.S. gold futures for December delivery rose 0.5% to $3,414.10. "Market participants are starting to debate if the Fed will do a 50 basis point cut at its September meeting following the comments from U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent yesterday, with a focus on incoming weaker U.S. economic data supporting that," said UBS commodity analyst Giovanni Staunovo. Markets are pricing in a more than 96% chance of a Fed rate cut next month, after July's mild inflation bump signalled limited impact from U.S. import tariffs on consumer prices, with at least one additional reduction anticipated by year-end. Gold, a non-yielding asset often viewed as a safe haven during times of economic or geopolitical uncertainties, typically benefits from a low-interest-rate environment. The dollar index hit a two-week low, making greenback-priced bullion more affordable for overseas buyers. Europe and Ukrainian leaders will speak with U.S. President Donald Trump at a virtual meeting on Wednesday ahead of his summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, as they try to drive home the perils of selling out Kyiv's interests in pursuit of a ceasefire. "Don't expect those talks to meaningfully influence the gold market, (they) might trigger some short-term volatility. Near-term prices are likely to move sideways, until incoming U.S. economic (data) starts to support a faster (Fed) rate cut cycle," Staunovo said. Meanwhile, the U.S. and China extended their tariff truce by another 90 days, averting triple-digit duties on each other's goods. Spot silver rose 1.7% to $38.53 per ounce, platinum was up 0.7% at $1,345.89 and palladium gained 0.5% to $1,135.45. (Reporting by Anmol Choubey in Bengaluru; Editing by Rashmi Aich, Kirsten Donovan)
