Met Gala 2025: DYK The Dazzling Daffodils Has A Greek Mythology Connection?

Artist Cy Gavin's vision tapped into the rich Greek mythology surrounding the Narcissus flower, famously linked to the tale of self-obsession.
The steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art were dressed in blue for the Met Gala 2025. Ditching the traditional red carpet, the stairs were transformed into a dreamy landscape of deep midnight blue adorned with pristine white daffodils. The custom-designed carpet, a creation of Extraweave's Neytt Homes, featured hand-painted daffodil prints scattered across its rich blue hue.
This unexpected floral takeover, a creation of artist Cy Gavin, provided a thought-provoking runway for the star-studded attendees arriving for the opening of the exhibition, 'Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.' You must be wondering what's so special about this floral choice, but let us tell you that this seemingly whimsical floral choice was far from random.
Artist Cy Gavin, drawing inspiration from the daffodils flourishing near his upstate New York studio, provided the creative direction for the carpet's design. Gavin's vision tapped into the rich Greek mythology surrounding the Narcissus flower, famously linked to the tale of self-obsession. This intriguing connection between vanity and beauty offered a thought-provoking backdrop for fashion's most self-aware night.
Set designer Derek McLane and event planner Raúl Àvila masterfully turned Gavin's idea into a tangible experience, turning the iconic steps into a symbolic runway. Adding another layer to the artistic direction, Gavin's painting, Untitled (Sky), which depicts narcissus flowers resembling glowing stars, was also projected at the event, according to Vogue. This immersive approach transformed the carpet from mere decor to a powerful statement on self-reflection and identity.
While the myth of Narcissus traditionally speaks to vanity, the daffodil in modern times symbolises growth, rebirth, and self-awareness – a fitting backdrop for an evening celebrating Black fashion and identity.
Now, let's talk about this year's theme. The exhibition, 'Superfine: Tailoring Black Style," is a powerful celebration spanning 300 years of Black fashion, identity, and the enduring legacy of Black dandyism. It pulled major inspiration from the late, legendary André Leon Talley, a towering figure in fashion, whose presence was palpable throughout the night.
The Met Gala 2025 was co-chaired by the exceptionally stylish Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, Pharrell Williams, and A$AP Rocky, each renowned for their unique sense of personal style and contributions to the cultural landscape.

In Netherlands, a 200-year-old condom is on display at ‘Safe Sex?' exhibit

The Netherlands' national museum has a new or rather a bizarre object on display, a nearly 200-year-old condom emblazoned with erotic art, that merges art with Amsterdam's infamous Red Light District. It is part of an exhibition called "Safe Sex?" about 19th-century sex work that opened on Tuesday. The 200-year-old condom, possibly a souvenir from a brothel, is decorated with an erotic image of a nun and three clergymen. According to a CNN report, the condom measures under eight inches, and is in 'mint condition,' said Joyce Zelen, curator of prints at the museum in Netherlands. UV testing revealed it hasn't been used, she added. 'Condoms would have been sold under the counter at the time. This fact, as well as the print and the extended length of the condom, which is 20 centimeters (7.9 inches) long, suggest that this was 'a luxury brothel souvenir,' she said. The Rijksmuseum said in a statement that the playful prophylactic is believed to be made around 1830 from a sheep's appendix and 'depicts both the playful and the serious side of sexual health.' 'This is my choice,' makes the print a parody of both celibacy and the Judgement of Paris from Greek mythology,' AP news agency quoted museum's statement. The inscription, 'Voilà mon choix', meaning 'This is my choice' is written along the sheath in French. According to the museum, this is a reference to the Pierre-Auguste Renoir painting "The Judgment of Paris," which depicts the Trojan prince Paris judging a beauty contest between three goddesses. While this kind of condom was not likely to have been used, those designed to protect the wearer would have been made with similar materials, Zelen told CNN, adding that they would have provided minimal protection from unwanted pregnancies and sexual transmitted infections such as syphilis, which was a significant public health problem in 19th century Europe. The Rijksmuseum reportedly acquired the condom at auction six months ago and it is the first example of a print on a condom to form part of the museum's collection. The condom is on display until the end of November.

Beyonce honours Black origins of country music in European 'Cowboy Carter' tour

LONDON -Singer Beyonce brought the "Rodeo Chitlin Circuit" to London as she kicked off the European leg of her "Cowboy Carter" tour, paying homage to Black contributions to country music in a nearly three hour show. The "Cowboy Carter and the Rodeo Chitlin Circuit" tour honours both Black performers, some of whom are featured on her Cowboy Carter album, as well as the venues known as the Chitlin Circuit that provided safe spaces for Black performers in the shadows of the Jim Crow segregation period. Beyonce, wearing an all-white bejewelled bodysuit with fringed chaps, opened Thursday night's show with "Ameriican Requiem" which explores themes of saying "goodbye to what has been" – the deep-rooted talons of racism within country music – and finding a new way forward. She followed it up with a rendition of "Blackbiird" – a Beatles song that Paul McCartney said was inspired by the civil rights movement in the southern United States - featuring emerging Black women in country music. Beyonce has spoken candidly about not feeling welcomed in the country genre despite her Texan roots, after she recently became the first Black woman to win best country album at the 2025 Grammy awards. Naila Keleta-Mae, a Canada Research Chair in race, gender, and performance, said Beyonce was bringing a "very specific aspect" of American culture to Europe. In deciding to perform only in London and Paris, Keleta-Mae said Beyonce had picked two cities with deep connections to Black culture, pointing to the Notting Hill carnival in the British capital and the history of the Harlem Renaissance in Paris. On stage, Beyonce rode a mechanical bull and flew around the Tottenham Hotspur stadium in a car and giant horseshoe, belting out a medley of new and old songs across genres, uniting people from all ages and backgrounds. Fans from all over the world, wearing Western-inspired outfits, descended on the capital for the opening night of the record six show run. Carlos, 28, who arrived from Mexico, said that the "unsafe political situation in the U.S." prompted him to travel to London to see Beyonce. Ashley Brown, a 36-year-old educator from Dallas, Texas said Beyonce was the first artist she had ever travelled out of state to see. The tour spurred a jump in sales of Beyonce-related items in May, according to data from e-commerce platform Shopify, with cowboy hats increasing by 288% from a year ago. The singer shared the stage with her two daughters Blue Ivy, 13, who danced on several songs, while her seven-year-old daughter Rumi Carter joined the pair as Beyonce performed the lullaby "Protector". After finishing in London, the 43-year-old will perform three shows in Paris, one of which falls on Juneteenth – a holiday that marks the end of slavery in the U.S.
